  • Easy Knitted Slippers for Beginners! Fast & FUN!
    Find the set of interchangeable knitting needles I used from our sponsor FABART goo.gl/vlhAK4 and save 20% with coupon code: Q6B4EYWQ
    *For a diagram, written pattern and a chance to win these kitting needles visit my blog and leave a comment for a chance to win: thefrugalcraft...
    Supplies:
    Size 9 knitting needles
    Super bulky yarn (look for a 6 on the label)
    Contrasting ribbon or yarn to use as stitch markers
    Measuring tape
    Scissors
    Yarn needle
    Stitches you need to know:
    Knit stitch
    Easy Knitted Slippers for Beginners! Fast & FUN!
    Purl Stitch
    Knit 2 together
    *All of these stitches are demonstrated in the video, checkout this video if you need more instruction: • knitting101_caston_kni...
    Directions: Use this for a ladies slipper size 6-10 or narrow men's slipper. Alteration tips below.
    1. Cast on on 22 stitches.
    2.Row 1: Knit7 (place stitch marker) Purl 1, Knit 6 (place stitch marker) Purl 1, Knit 7
    3. Row 2: Knit
    *Repeat these 2 rows until you have a rectangle of fabric that is as long as the distance from your heel to the widest part of your foot (where the toe knuckles are) I knit this part 8 1/2" to fit a size 8-9 ladies shoe size.
    4. Decreasing for the toe:
    Knit 1, Knit 2 together (repeat across row.)
    Next row: Knit. Repeat these 2 rows.
    5. Knit across as many rows as you need until you have 1/4" of toe left to cover.
    6. Repeat step 4.
    7. Cut yarn leaving a 18" tail, thread yarn into a yarn needle and draw yarn through stitches on the needle. Slide the stitches off the needle and pull tight to close the toe. Fold slipper fabric in half and seam up the toe. Fasten off and weave in ends.
    8. Use the tail from the cast on end to seam the heel, fasten off and weave in ends.
    Alterations:
    To make a wider slipper add a stitch or two in each knit column. So instead of casting on 22 stitches (k7, p1, k6, p1, k7) you might cast on 25 stitches and k8, p1, k7, pi, k8. Just add stitches evenly and follow the knitting instructions for the rest of the slipper.
    To make smaller slippers you can decrease stitches from each column. Alternately you could use thinner yarn and smaller knitting needles so a smaller slipper would not be as bulky. I suggest making notes as you knit the first slipper so you can easily make the second one match.

      Sherrie D. I used to be like that and then I found The Knit Crowd, hosted by Mikey and does many crochet videos too if you want to check them out. He was my teacher in understanding crochet since 2012 or 2013 and I have made hats, scarfs, fingerless gloves/ wristies, afghans and socks now. Forgot to mention that Mikey's crochet tutorials can be found on the UA-cam channel The Crochet Crowd.

    I just realised this could be made on a knitting loom of the "rake" type, about 20-25 pegs long. Would probably give a looser knit unless you have a wooden one with v close pegs. I love to knit at the loom - so fast and so easy!

      Vaun Dinger I've done it - double-knit (meaning both rows at once) on 22 pins of a 24 or 26 pin rake. Use proper knit stitch not e-wrap and KO, and proper perl where Mrs W uses perl and it works fine. Suggest a fairly chunky yarn given rakes knit loose.

    Thanks for this video - perfect timing as a dear friend has a lot of issues with the cold after chemo and these would help as they could be worn in bed etc or at work. I have some amazing yarn that would be perfect for this - it is wool and chenille - 2 metres of wool, 2 metres of chenille, alternating over and over. It would be perfect for this - it is from a Californian company but I can't remember the name - it'll come to me! I used it to loom-knit hats.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  7 років тому

      that sounds interesting, I have never seen yarn like that.

    • @TheSpinDoctor
      @TheSpinDoctor 7 років тому +2

      thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich It's made by Crystal Palace and sold by LOADS of companies and it is called "Aria yarn". The (patterning) colourways they sell it in are not just amazing, they sell a standard wool yarn in matching colourways so you can use them together which is especially good for weaving as it looks better if aria is the warp and a normal yarn is the weft. I've used it to spin artyarns by plying it with both a chunky single in a similar colour (usually a merino-silk mix I buy both parts dyed and blend myself before spinning) and a fine invisible thread with greywood beads on it so every few feet there's a bead in the finished yarn. An absolute bugger to spin that (Navajo ply and needs an extra-wide orifice and a flyer designed for larger yarns) but you can arm knit the resultant yarn into beautiful blankets and shawls.

    Watching an American knit is always kind of weird for me. The "German" version works the other way around, instead of wrapping the yarn around the needle we use the needle to "catch" the yarn around it. It feels mor efficient to only use the one hand with the working needle but I guess that is only because that is the way I learned it and am used to. Anyway I will totally try this as my slippers are starting to fall apart :)

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  7 років тому

      +TheAlmutz I never thought of that. When I crochet I dip the hook and grab the yarn with it and when I knit I wrap. I thought u was efficient because many knitters I know make big arm motions when they wrap. I learned from a book so I am sure there are better ways:)

    • @TheAlmutz
      @TheAlmutz 7 років тому +1

      thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich well I would say there are different ways. In my experience, watching both German and American/British UA-camrs and their tutorials, it is a "cultural" thing how you work your yarn and I bet if someone who knits like you do watches my version of knitting they would think their way is more efficient. It is just a very interesting difference I recognised :)

    You are an angel! This is the perfect project. For me at this time. Over the Christmas break I know what I will be doing. I need to make six pairs for some cold feet. Thanks a million! Are these your grandmother's slippers?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  7 років тому

      not exactly but close, I think she did a ki,pi ribbing for the toe and she mat not have decreased because the end of the slipper was more round. It was the inspiration though! She would use two stands of red heart yarn held together and some of the color combos she used were wild, I loved them!

    • @pacrossett
      @pacrossett 7 років тому

      Well, I could not wait until Christmas break! I have the first slipper almost to the toe decrease. I am using two strands of yarn from the stash! I will probably have some wild combinations, too. People give me yarn. I feel I need to use it up before I buy more, but I love your chenille slippers.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I got one of those big stitch studio balls of yarn at Acmoore and I think I can make 3 pairs from one big ball. I would thing you could get a pair from a ball of Hartland USA or Lion Brand Thick and Quick (but I would get another ball from the same dye lot just in case, you can always take it back if you don't need it)

    • @TheSpinDoctor
      @TheSpinDoctor 7 років тому

      Anita Holmes I guess you could always line the sole with a footshaped (trace around an insole) piece of lining fabric? Chenille is pretty hard wearing as it's a strip of velvet-like fabric really not a yarn - I would not want to try making these with a non-chenille yarn myself as I don't think a standard yarn would last quite so long.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  7 років тому +1

      we used to slide down the hallway with our granny slippers on (OK I still do...explains some of the aches and pains I get LOL!) Grammie used 2 strands of red hear acrylic to make hers and they held up well. Also you could add some sillicone caulking to the soles (a tip from Emi- Hectanooga1 on youtube) to make then non slip and that will probably add durability or add a felt liner as Rich (Spin doctor) suggested.
