Hi, this is a masterclass in how to present a maintenance job. Clear and precise instructions given in the right order and with useful hints and tips along the way.
Had to do this in the airport long term parking lot after leaving the car for two weeks and it started saying the 12 volt battery was failing while I was away. With the help of a friend meeting me at the airport and this video - we did the battery swap in less than 5 minutes.
Many sites recommended using the new lighter weight 12V battery. On the App of my Tesla3 the manufacturer recommends replacing with a new lead weight. I personally would prefer the lighter one but I don’t want to void any warranty issues.
Wifes Model 3 died on her battery wise it seems, so we needed to replace. Called Tesla and we picked a 12V battery up for $85. Found this video and turned it alive again! Thanks for posting this!
Excellent, helpful video. Swapped my battery in less than 10 mins following this tutorial, the only thing I had was a message saying that some functions couldn’t be supported by the battery once I had swapped it, at first I thought the battery wasn’t correct but then the message disappeared and I haven’t seen it since
Apreciate the video. Woke up on vacation today and had this warning. Watched this video then called around to find out there wasnt a tesla batterry in montana. A kid at orielys auto parts said it was a group 51 battery in size and spec. They carry that battery and i installed it in 5 minutes in there lot. Super easy. Remember group 51. 189$ lead 250$ AGM
If the 12V battery is completely dead, can I just install the new one without disconnecting the HV connector? Or do I need to jump it first and then follow the steps in this video
@@TheBatteryShop Hi, Now 2 weeks later my Tesla tells me I have to change the battery again. Any idea what could be wrong? Did I need to do a reset or so?
Thanks for this step-by-step video. Who knew that each Tesla had a regular battery that runs all the controls? Our battery died, the car was bricked. I figured out it was the 12V battery by connecting a tender charger and the car came to life again. So we bought the replacement from Tesla, not bad, price was $85 + tax, but they dont share this information to properly clear the 'Electrical system is unable support' message.
Brilliant video. I had a mobile fitter come around to replace the battery, he had never done a Model 3 before and wasn't allowed to disconnect the main battery, so I did that part and he replaced the 12v. This is my 3rd battery in 4 years for this car and i've only done 12k miles. I use the car once or twice a week. I don't know if i'm not driving it enough to keep the battery topped up or if its a common problem with the car.
Thanks for the well done video. I was surprised that apparently Tesla doesn't suggest you use the software power down before disconnecting the two batteries, but obviously the given procedure works without it Controls / safety / power off
I bought a battery from Tesla but cannot access the vehicle to disconnect frkn the hv battery. Its nit responding to being jumped either, is it possible to replace the 12v without disconnecting from the hv battery?
Hi - Thanks for watching! We don’t know for sure, so we can only suggest that you refer to the vehicle owner’s manual or a service/ repair manual for that information.
Hi - Thanks for watching! The proper installation of a battery that meets or exceeds the O.E. specifications for the battery will not void the vehicle's warrantee as per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act.
Hi - Thanks for watching! Actually, auto parts stores and the vehicle dealership's parts department will all have a battery that meets or exceeds the specifications for the original battery in your vehicle.
Usually I buy from Rockauto or Costco, but neither carried the right battery. I wound up buying direct from Tesla, the service center near me had it in stock and they charged a fair price (under $100).
I couldn’t find one at any normal parts stores and many fancy ones online we’re out of stock or over $400. Got the OEM battery at Tesla for 90 bucks incl tax and no core.
Hi - Thanks for watching! We recommend that you follow the vehicle manufacturer's step-by-step instructions, found in a service/repair manual for the vehicle, like we did when we replaced the battery in the video.
So I paid Tesla mobile to replace the 12 volt battery for me and shortly after they left I started getting messages on my Tesla mobile app that my front trunk is opened even though it was not. Furthermore, this morning when I was driving to work autopilot was disengaged randomly by the same front trunk is open message . I don't know if this is a complete messed up coincidence that now I'm having this issue after Tesla worked on my car but something I did notice was that they took out the entire front truck plastic cover when they were working on my car to replace the 12 volt battery. Any ideas?
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience! We do not have that type of information here in the studio, so we can only recommend that you refer to a service/repair manual for diagnostic procedures.
Hi - Thanks for watching! We were reciting the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. We were able to access the "penthouse" by just lifting the corner of the seat cushion.
I know it's been 3 months, but a Tesla tech told me that this step to disconnect the 12v battery from the high voltage battery is needed or else the car won't 'reset' and acknowledge that a new 12v battery has been installed.
Thank you for watching. The battery that fits this model Tesla is a 85B24LS. Here is the link to a search on autobatteries.com www.autobatteries.com/search-result?zipCode=53149&radius=15&vehType=AUTOMOTIVE&y=2022&mk=Tesla&md=3+-+Base&eng=BATTERY+EV+%28EV%2FBEV%29&country=US
It did for me! 2018 Model 3 LR RWD. Got a VCFRONT error that went away immediately, followed by a "replace battery" notification. Tesla said they could fit me in for an appointment same day, but I just bought the battery from them instead and installed it myself following these instructions. Cost me about $90 for the battery.
@@taylorostberg5950 just got this warning yesterday taking my car in today to get the replacement. Have the same year and model you have. Of course this happed after I passed 50,000 miles.
My 12v battery died. No way to open the frunk. Touch screen is off and app doesn't connect. I pulled out the plug in the front bumper and used an a23 12v battery to connect the two leads but still the frunk won't open. I don't even hear it trying to open. I also tried a 9v battery on the leads.
@@TheBatteryShop That makes no sense because once the 12 volt battery negative cable was disconnected the car will throw a code as it doesn't sense voltage. This is why you would disconnect the HV battery first.
Question: How does water get to the battery to where it needs to be replaced? Also, how much water would need to effect the battery to cause it to be replaced? Yes, I know every Tesla is different and it depends on the age of the battery and how much it has degraded, but Also, if a person is looking to purchase a used EV what type of things should they look out for outside of the brakes, tires, interior, etc.? Is there a device that checks for how much the battery has degraded?
Hi - Thanks for watching! Modern AGM batteries are sealed and do not require adding water. You can have your battery tested to determine it’s state of health. Repair shops, Dealerships and auto parts stores can do that for you.
Hi - Thanks for watching and your input! We have changed the title of the video to be more descriptive. The video description said it's the 12-volt battery and now the title does too.
The 12 volt battery should charge when the car is plugged in and/or "running/driving"....there's no reason it shouldn't stay charged up and last for many years....something seems wrong.
Thank you for watching. The Tesla Model 3 does have an ODBII port but we would recommend checking with your dealer if a memory save should be used during installation of a new battery.

Tesla just sold me one yesterday for $85, which is far less than I've seen anywhere else have it for.
Unfortunately this video doesn’t work for the 2022 tesla models as tesla changed them to a new 12 volt battery type.
Hi - Thanks for watching! We recommend that you follow the vehicle manufacturer's step-by-step instructions, found in a service/repair manual for the vehicle, like we did when we replaced the battery in the video.

What do you mean when you refer to the Penthouse?
Hi - Thanks for watching! That's what the manufacturer calls that item over the disconnect.
It's the area under the rear seat, raised above (like a penthouse) the rest of the battery pack.
