Just to clarify: This method works only if the car is unlocked (via the app) and the 12v is completely dead. It WILL work if the car is unlocked the 12v is alive and working but at that point you can just open your frunk through the screen. The FRUNK will NOT OPEN if the car is LOCKED with a healthy 12v battery using the battery method shown! Get the battery here if you can't get into your Tesla! ‣ Jump Starter: geni.us/hfGB ‣ Cigarette Outlet Splitter: geni.us/lznBi ‣ A23- Battery- geni.us/riCKUk
One thing to note: you should set a calendar event to periodically take your jump start battery inside to recharge. The last thing you want is for it to be dead the day you need it.
These batteries are lithium, I had a few instances where the booster battery is weak especially during the cold season. Some of them includes an auxiliary adaptor, so I kept my ICE car booster connected to the “cigarette” lighter adapter that turns on when the car is and charges the booster. I haven’t figure out what to do with myself Tesla yet since it should be in the frunk. For now, I have AAA coverage for both of our Tesla and ICE car since they are both out of the road service / warranty and both has the original battery. 4+ for Tesla and 9 years for our BMW.
I not a tesla driver, but I have a jump starter in my car, I charge it maybe once a year, they should hold charge for up to 3 years or more depending on the brand. you don't need it to be charging the battery all the time, it will reach the cycle life and will be dead when you need it the most. Its like charging your ev battery everyday, even when its full, eventually you will reach the end of life sooner than the original timeframe
Chris, I've watched your channel for a number of years now and this one just prompted me to check my battery which is over 14 volts and order the A23. Thanks again for this information.
Thank Man ! You just helped me so much tonight. The Tesla roadside service doesn’t have any idea what’s going on. They wanted me to have it towed to the Tesla dealership. Thanks so much ! We made it back home !
You sont have to worry about a thief breaking into your frunk even if you leave the battery in there. The frunk release only works if the 12V battery is dead or the car doors are unlocked.
You also need to tell your viewers that the jump starter needs to be kept charged by charging it every other month or so. More frequent in extreme heat or cold. And they should always keep sentry mode on to keep criminals from accessing your frunk. Tesla should really make that option a type of physical key so that only the owner can open it.
Recently received the notification on my Tesla and had mobile service come out to change the 12v battery. $118, tech was in and out in 10 min. I know many young folks in the comment section are disappointed the 12v can fail but before Tesla's software warning and mobile service, automakers for decades didn't give a $hit if you're 12v died. And no mobile service or fancy mobile app was available, you just just hoped and prayed you were near an auto shop that could help in an emergency. And if you drive any American automaker brand you know brands like Ford and Chevy always have a check engine light on new or old or the indicator for the 12v battery was always lit up, and since it was always on because of bad censors you just eventually ignored it until one day the 12v was in fact no good.
I had the misfortune of a terrible head on accident with my Model 3 on the driver side due to a red light runner. I thought I was so prepared at the tow yard with my battery and jump starter, but the front was so mangled I could not even find those two leads. I kept the cover as a reminder, the leads got ripped off and lost somewhere. Cut up my hands looking for them. The only way I got into the car was that since the windows were vented after the airbags went off I found a long piece of junk with an angled end to pull the emergency release from inside while bending the window back. I got the trunk open by hitting the 'kidnap button,' which was hard since the Highway Patrol filled up the interior of my car with the junk from the other one, also got all cut up from this... To try and make a positive out of it if you do get into an accident open the glovebox and GRAB THE USB/SDCard whatever has your dashcam footage. In my case there was a fight over who was at fault, and if I could not get the USB that day it would have been a massive pain to then try and get the video evidence later. Also please just because you have a green light does not mean it is safe...
I just had to replace my battery today and Tesla quoted me $110 for mobile service but it would take almost 20 days for my appointment. With the warnings in the car telling me that the car might not start again after being parked, I started shopping. O'Reilly and Auto Zone don't carry anything for Tesla (outside of wipers) but Advance Auto Parts just started carrying these batteries in June 2024. I managed to get one shipped to store, but the price tag was steep at $300. There are a lot of videos on UA-cam showing to to replace the battery yourself, and it was extremely easy. The only tool you'll need is a 10mm socket. Took me about 15 minutes and was very simple.
This is really useful information! It just beats by WHY Tesla makes jump starting so user-unfriendly as compared to a gas engine where the battery is easily accessible.
I assume because it’s much easier and cheaper for them to design a system like this with virtual keycards than to integrate the creation and distribution of physical locks and keys into their production line.
Here is an EV sidebar; my Kia Niro BEV has the 12 volt battery right out in the open, where it can be reached. The 'frunk ' is smaller than the Tesla. If Tesla had consumer sense in mind, it would be in the rear of the EV. And use the same panic open feature
Note the newer Li-Ion batteries (vs Lead Acid) operate around 15-16v. The manual says you should still be able to jump start them with 12v packs, but I haven't had to try it yet.
Thanks for the video, Chris. I had this happen on my 2019 SR+ Model 3 with no indication one lunch hour at work. Had to get it towed to a SC. I'm proactively replacing my 12v every three years going forward. I live in Canada so I'm sure all the cold starts wore it down quite quickly.
Great stuff, I have a battery jump bank, but couldn't figure out how/where to safely store a 9v battery... the little A123 batt in a baggie is a great idea! and remember: this is ALSO very useful not just if 12v dies after 3-4yrs+... but also if your HIGH voltage battery goes completely dead when you ran out of range, since... the 12v batt runs out of juice very soon after, since no HV batt to recharge it, then... by time tow truck gets you to supercharger, it's dead, and ... you still can't supercharge, he has to jump your 12v... this can help if they don't know how. As you pinned comment, this method won't let thieves into frunk in normal situations. Still the best place to securely store valuables. It only helps when batt is dead and car locked, eg emergency. re the jump starter, I don't think the Tesla needs very high current/amps capacity, since there is no heavy starter motor current inrush... just needs enough to get the low-voltage system bootstrapped enough, to let the HV contactors close, so the HV batt can run the DC:DC converters (like alternator) and provide 12v power to system, ... letting you supercharge, not just open doors / use touchscreen. Hopefully more tow truck operators get savvy w/ EV low-voltage batt jumping...
Now to remember to replace the little battery every 2-3 years so that it’s not dead when I need it. I can’t find a lithium-based 12v little battery like the a23, which would have a 10-year shelf life.
Isn't that kind of a waste and unnecessary pollution to replace components when there's no sign that they are bad? Especially a battery? Doesn't the car charge it like it is with ICEs? I was used to factory batteries lasting 6-8 years in normal cars. Looking into Teslas but confused tbh.

I have not run across any real geeky technical information on Tesla's yet. Seems the real interest is driving it. Yes, why doesn't the car have a step down converter that can use the big battery to provide "some" power to the 12v system. An example is like an electric golf cart where you can get a converter to step the 48v battery pack down to 12v for an accessory, like a radio, lights, etc. How can Tesla be so dumb to just let the accessory/electronics battery just go full flat?
Tesla frunk should be able to open manually from inside the car like ICE car can do for centuries. Tesla needs to fix this. I preemptively replaced my 12v battery after 3 years due to this issue. Thanks for your videos. I have a question about cruise control. With all the current software updates, cruise control is no longer available like it was before. How do access this option?
How are you keeping all those batteries and jump starters in your car? With the difference in temperatures they are not going to last more than a few months before they expand or worse...
Just happened to me. Luckily it died in my garage. No warning. Darn car locked itself and the little battery trick didn't work so I had to use another car battery just to unlock it. Drove to the Tesla service center in another car and replaced the 12V battery for $89.
😂 most of them are Teslas? I kind of doubt that since my Tesla has never broken down and my city is full of broken down old beaters, as I write this I'm sitting in front of a Starbucks watching a bunch of people volunteering in a busy intersection to push a broken down pickup truck out of the way.

How much is a new 12v battery
How do you unlock doors if 12V is dead? The systems that connect your car and phone are all off.
Milwaukee M18 battery
Weird question, but does your model 3 inspection checklist cover 2021 Teslas or just the newer ones? Getting it because PICTURES!!!
Why a23? Any alternatives?
Thanks!
Wonder why Tesla doesn’t display battery voltage.
Six months later but as a Tow truck driver, I tow more Tesla's than any other car. 90% of them all had this problem happen without warning.
A tie thing that you twist. Hmmmm twist tie? 😅
hahah
hi Chris great for share.
my question in case car is not thing wrong so the robbery use AA battery use your formula to open Trunk ?
thanks
Secret is no longer a secret. :)
Basically just showed how to break into a frunk lol
Only works if the 12 volt battery is dead… this won’t work if your battery is good…. So no you can break into a frunk
Does Tesla replace the 12V for free? Missed that in the video
I can’t find the wires when I popped that small lid … where is it
How long you have to charge?
Would this battery trick works on auto frunk?
Should be, it just unlocks. If you can manually raise the auto frunk then no problem.
It’s scary that thief can use a small battery to open your frunk😮
Isn't car still under warranty, let them replace at no charge
This only works with A23 battery? How about double A?
The A23 battery is a dry battery consisting of eight LR932 cells, with a nominal voltage of 12 V.
sheesh. Correct AA wont work
Wait but, by doing that that means people can just steal whatever I have in the front? 😅 By doing that no?
