"Let's give Guthrie the chord change section, can't make it too easy..." TOO EASY hahaha He's on another level. It's cool watching other legends watch him play, knowing he's from another planet. Absolutely unreal ear and technique.
What's more than that, Guthrie plays absolutely best when he has chords to fuck around with. He essentially just outlines the chords when he improvises
Everyone else was just noodling around with a few mistakes here and there like they were feeling around for something unique while Guthrie pulled a melodic masterpiece out of thin air and played it like it was written on paper and practiced to perfection. Can't leave out Andy James on his solo though. His melodic sense is great and his accuracy is incredible.
I literally had no idea of what Guthrie would do when the backing started, it was so different to anything I heard him play before. Then, of course, the fucker goes on to play probably the best solo I've heard in my life. Don't even know why I'm surprised.
Leonardiski123 while everyone was busy praising undeserving musicians Guthrie just kept practicing religiously....everyone else here is a joke...this is the truth my friend...but it's a taboo to speak this way....so u get the point ...
Guthrie is so good because his ear is so good, he really knows what notes are in the chords and plays in a very melodic way where he lets the specific chord tones guide where he is heading. He has incredible chops but his note choice is where he really shines.
I feel Guthrie is the kind of guitarist that bassists and drummers want to have in their band. He plays with the rhythm section, rather than just treating them like a human backing track.
Agreed cos he can do and has done everything and imitating the greats for practise videos along to backing tracks I bet he loves it even more with like minded musicians creating and vibjng off something new
@@Elemy69 for sure. I feel like anytime any of these guys play together that they are very into each other’s playing.. at least I’d assume just because everyone’s playing and phrasing is a little different and there is always something you can learn from eachother. It's probably because they were mesmerized. Honestly, even when I watch it I just simply listen to Guthrie's playing without headbanging or anything like that. His playing sounds so meaningful and passionate that I just listen to him play and get emotional most of the times
MannnisEi I think it's partially because of the way they record their albums, they always start with drums first. It doesn't give him the chance to accent the feel of everything else that is going on in the song.
that feeling when you're married for 25 yrs and got that chance to date or have a 1 night stand with 3 hot chicks. including your wife, 2 neighbours up close and a crowd watching you do it at a distance.
you fucking kidding right. Mangini is like a god-like legend. Just cuz Sheehan is a bassist in Vai's doesn't mean he's a random talent. Drums and bass are supporting foundations.
I love how Tosin’s head nods with Guthrie’s groove from about 7:52, then Guthrie’s hits the next chorus with that insane run and Tosin’s head goes into a 32nd note shake
john thapa it’s all about tone for you isn’t it. I agree that John was legendary as usual but Guthrie........he was prolly using half the gain than the others were which meant that we could easily make out any mistakes he did but his clarity is on another level. His improvising is a lot better than anyone on the stage because of his versatility and his a ability to play any genre of music. So you need to ignore the tone for some time, ok. Also what about andy James? His improvisation was insane as well, right?
@@smitapawah4236 WTF? The career of John stalled guitar solos with little gain and is one of the guitarists known for being very neat in his technique. By the way, Guthrie is not that he uses little gain, only that his sound is overwhelmed at mid frequencies, which gives an impression to the ear of having little gain in his set up.
@@Kdog-hw6ri i believe he doesnt feel confortable playing live :/ he said that on an interview I saw from Rick Beato's channel, wich is quite sad, cuz man, Graham is a god. He could be playing there with those legends and still improvise craaaaaaaaazy stuff...

Gotta give a good thumbs up to the bassist for being able to stand up alone and strong against five of the top notch guitarists. Without him the universe would have been void. And to top it off his progressions and mastery in guiding the forces is really amazing. Hats off to you sir.
I think over the years, Petrucci has lost some of what made him one of my favorite guitarists. He used to write some beautiful solos, but he's become much more of a "shredder first" type of guy lately and dream theater as a whole has lost what made them great. Scenes from a memory was probably his best as far as musicality. Beautiful writing, beautiful songs and beautiful solos. Six Degrees also had some really nice, non shredder solos in it, but it was probably a bit "out there" as far as songs go, for most people. I personally loved it.
@@MAGAMAN Yeah, Petrucci is an eternal mystery. My personal theory is that he's too nice. Hence why he was never able to break free of LaBrie and now Mangini, with their lack of appropriate musicality. However, if I ever feel down in life I usually end up watching videos of him on UA-cam, and I think many feel the same, so he's clearly an amazing force for good in the world.
How can Guthrie be just so much better than simply everyone else?? The level of confidence when he improvises... it's like he has a huge library of ideas for every possible progression you throw at him and these are not simple ideas. I refuse to believe he comes up with all this stuff on the spot.
It's because Guthrie doesn't restricts his playing to one music genre. He is a very curious musician so he used to practice literally everything he could hear, whether it be rock, pop, funk, or even jazz. Not to say the other guitarists don't do that but to a lesser extent, they'd rather narrow themselves to metal, and focus their practice on fast notes and shredding. Guthrie studied a lot of jazz which is the best genre of music for improvisation
@@s1iznc1d34 That's an acquired taste. Some people, as they grow up, usually steer away from the ultra distorted processed sound that doesn't sound like a guitar anymore. It's a less commercial sound for sure. Take for example Petrucci's tone. It used to be amazing during the first DT records when he was with Ibanez. Now it's just too much, but it sells better. They need to sell music to kids who are still in the extreme metal stage, not to their old fans who are likely to have moved on to modern jazz. Guthrie's tone is just more mature. Less effects and more wood (if that's even a thing).
@@palopo-t3v What would you say about Steve Vai's tone? His pickups are still extremely hot, but I would argue his phrasing and choice of exotic chord progressions has become far more mature, and his hot-rodded-but-creamy neck pickup tone works with that altered aesthetic instead of against it. That said, I'm barely in my early twenties, and I already find the change you describe occurring in me.
what the first guy said and the fact that Guthrie is literally a genius when it comes to language, he went to oxford for english before he left to focus on guitar. Hes said many times he thinks of music similarly, as a language with rules that can be learned followed and appropriately broken. Consequently hes also brilliant at explaining guitar/music concepts in a universally understandable way which others struggle with.
@@davidderoux7552 wrong fanboy. Petrucci and Andy James solos sound one dimensional and Metal cliche scale runs with bends. Guthrie was playing out of the box and feel.

The answer to which is very simple, he is "THE BEST" among the rest! I hv been following this man since music made sense to me and undoubtedly IMHO I consider him as the one of the best musician there has ever been in the history.
Guthrie says in his interviews yngwie is big influence on him. I can see he shreds like Yngwie. More emotional and melodic. I think you should blame more Paul Gilbert'ish players.

I don't think that way. It seems like he is also figuring out the right notes to suit up with the chord changes.
@@Nedwin The music is figuring out the right ways to suit up guthrie lol
@@Nedwin there are no wrong notes for guthrie. Jazz has no "right" notes. You just have to deliver the context.
Rather, they took his beer so he wouldn't get drunk. Maybe he was going to break a string like he did for Zimmer...
When the riff at 8:25 aligned, the drummer literally stood to crash the cymbals. Awesome.
Don't even know why I'm surprised.
hahahahaha you’re right..this fucker always trying to find way to not sound like himself..my all time fav guitarist
The drummer influencing the solo made him play with 2x more passion. Absolutely love it.
It’s not drummer. It’s Mike Mangini!!😏
Guthrie Govan how can someone be that good
at neo classical, yes but Guthrie is more well-rounded and creative ..
Loved his clear, concise tone too .. I think I need a V30 Victory amp now!
Mal Reynolds shut the fuck up yngwie copy cat
Ask Greg Howe!
Leonardiski123 while everyone was busy praising undeserving musicians Guthrie just kept practicing religiously....everyone else here is a joke...this is the truth my friend...but it's a taboo to speak this way....so u get the point ...
8:15 Andy can’t believe what he just witnessed. 😂
Lol, I noticed.....and rightfully so!!
Guthrie and Andy was on the same LICKLIBRARY, as a guitar teacher
Andy's phrasing is OFF THE HOOK tho
Everyone were like "is he a fucking alien!?"
oh god I missed it, fucking hilarious.
Guthrie is so good because his ear is so good, he really knows what notes are in the chords and plays in a very melodic way where he lets the specific chord tones guide where he is heading. He has incredible chops but his note choice is where he really shines.
thank you my friend
Andy James plays just like JP. Petrucci looks him like "dude, is this how i look like when i'm playing?"
My thoughts exactly!
I like how everyone on stage is so interested in what Guthrie plays
Guthrie's solo is like he's telling a story. I liked the others too, but they felt more like lick exercises.
Damn right……too many tongues and fingers tied up in knots!
Dude you have to check your ears listen to petrucci lol
love guthrie always wanted to see him play with these guys
06:26 Mangini exactly knows how to support guitar properly.
8:20 Andy + Petrucci's face: - Govan is out of this word
but you didn't notice how Gutrie looked at Andy when he played. Shame on you...
Even abasi
I add 17:25
Just watch JP’s face...
Like wow really to Guthrie
Everyone comparing the guitarists but no one appreciating the drummer!
raghav dube
me :)
mangini gods 😂
Its mangini dude, he's one of the best drummers alive
For Mangini those lines are so easy that his brain was idle or just day dreaming while playing.
those rolls he does are absolutely burning
Its monster Mangini
I feel Guthrie is the kind of guitarist that bassists and drummers want to have in their band. He plays with the rhythm section, rather than just treating them like a human backing track.
Agreed cos he can do and has done everything and imitating the greats for practise videos along to backing tracks I bet he loves it even more with like minded musicians creating and vibjng off something new
Any time tosin and Guthrie play together tosin seems so stoked on Guthrie
He doesn't even bother to play rythms lol 😂
Tosin is extremely humble and nice, he is awesome..
And it seems to be reciprocal. Guthrie seems to be very curious about Tosin's technique
@@Elemy69 for sure. I feel like anytime any of these guys play together that they are very into each other’s playing.. at least I’d assume just because everyone’s playing and phrasing is a little different and there is always something you can learn from eachother. Unless your Yngwie maybe.. and your ego is just huge...Jk. It’s probly that way for him as well..
Skywalker meets yoda level respect. .
Crazy how Guthrie is holding this whole thing together he really is the silent master and they all know it
The best solo was of Guthrie 's and Andy 's.... Guthrie took it to different dimensions....
All are great players!!!
@@rabindra.shrestha yeah but guthries and andys are the best suit to the music
It was okay..
By far Andys solo,for me!
i like jp second solo a lot
Every time I watch this I feel like Guthrie's solo doesn't get anywhere near the recognition it deserves from the crowd compared to some of the others
It's probably because they were mesmerized. Honestly, even when I watch it I just simply listen to Guthrie's playing without headbanging or anything like that. His playing sounds so meaningful and passionate that I just listen to him play and get emotional most of the times
Right?
Honestly, he doesn't need us mortals to cheer for him. Most of just freeze with awe when guthrie plays.
I've never heard Mangini sound this good... Why isn't he this lively and organic on the DT records?
MannnisEi I think it's partially because of the way they record their albums, they always start with drums first. It doesn't give him the chance to accent the feel of everything else that is going on in the song.
MannnisEi low pay scale?
that feeling when you're married for 25 yrs and got that chance to date or have a 1 night stand with 3 hot chicks. including your wife, 2 neighbours up close and a crowd watching you do it at a distance.
Other sound and music. I like very much how he interacts. He grooves great here. I am extremely surprised how differently he grooves here. Love it!
you fucking kidding right.
I keep coming back to this video. Time stamp usually is 6:52 ..
Same here
Same here
Same here
OMG.. John's tone and playing is always too perfect!
But unfortunately lots of guthrie fanboy here simply they don't know what tone is but keep praising coz he is fast versatile shredder ..
john thapa it’s all about tone for you isn’t it.
It would be super awesome if Rick Graham was also there
Start a camping to convince Andy and JP to get him.
Ifkrrr!!!!
I was thinking of that too..rick would be great
Is there any live Rick Graham work?
@@Kdog-hw6ri i believe he doesnt feel confortable playing live :/ he said that on an interview I saw from Rick Beato's channel, wich is quite sad, cuz man, Graham is a god. He could be playing there with those legends and still improvise craaaaaaaaazy stuff...
love how twards the end andy and tosin are so in awe getting to see their hero john solo-ing away in person. what a dream must've been
Tosin watching Guthrie is hilarious.
At 8:20 AJ looks at JP and just shakes his head at the greatness...sign of respect among amazing players.
When you start to transcribe this even just a little you realize this guy is just superimposing all over the place to make this chords sound cool
And it's improvised on the spot. Guthrie is incredible
Hey, what's the chord progression?
@@tomasvitale5366 The verse (as guthrie played it) is
Dbm7(11), Cmaj7(#11), Amaj7(#11), Amaj7(#11), Gbm7, Fmaj7(#11), B7, B7.
The other section i guess is something around F# phrygian dominant
@@tomer107 Amazing, thank you!!
Gotta give a good thumbs up to the bassist for being able to stand up alone and strong against five of the top notch guitarists. Without him the universe would have been void. And to top it off his progressions and mastery in guiding the forces is really amazing. Hats off to you sir.
Guthrie’s talent is indisputable, but Petrucci’s sound and musicality is also on another level. Great musicians both!
Yes, I agree 100% 👍👍
@@MAGAMAN Yeah, Petrucci is an eternal mystery. My personal theory is that he's too nice. Hence why he was never able to break free of LaBrie and now Mangini, with their lack of appropriate musicality. However, if I ever feel down in life I usually end up watching videos of him on UA-cam, and I think many feel the same, so he's clearly an amazing force for good in the world.
Yes petruci sound unique, for me the rest sound the same
@@othomas1825 Andy sounds very very good too!
I honestly have been returning to this video for years just to hear guthrie's improvisation
Less effects and more wood (if that's even a thing).
you should see a Scott Henderson Trio live
GG is a biological channel through which infinite music transits, without any limitation.
A real Wizard... just amazing!!!
Guthrie comes down from Mt. Olympus to jam with the mortals, how nice of him!
Andy James and JP solos sounds 100 times better than Olympus guy...
@@davidderoux7552 wrong fanboy. Petrucci and Andy James solos sound one dimensional and Metal cliche scale runs with bends. Guthrie was playing out of the box and feel.
@@thebomontellano4996 it sounds 100 times better to me,I like metal not rock+jazz fusion.Nothing it's wrong...
@@davidderoux7552 That's why he is a god, because his level of difficulty is so much higher than the rest. That's the reason my friend. If andy and pettruci are one dimensional guthrie is multi

Even in a room like this that is full if guitar Gods, Guthrie is in a league of his own.
At 8:14 Andy just freezes and is in total awe of what Guthrie is playing
Ya you’d act the same in front of God too 😉
08:45 I'm a fan of JP, but those faces at the end of Gutrhie's solo prove he's out of this world!! Genius
Sorry bro but petrucci is more exiting for me
8:16 when andy james stops headbanging an is just listening... :-D
Guthrie seems to fly above everything haha! His fast playing technique seems so articulate, not a mistake, and contextually musically perfect. Wish I knew about him sooner! His improvisation skills equal Petrucci's composition skills, goddamn!
I cried man tears after Guthie's solo..beautiful
I kept seeing all Guthrie comments. So watched the whole video and man...these comments weren't wrong. He's is hands down the best one there. So damn tasty and effective. Wow.
7:40 Mangini got pregnant of a little Govan
It's refreshing to see all the guitar gods smile and gush like us normies when seeing Guthrie play.
That was one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen on this website.
7:12 you know Guthrie is the most interesting/best guitar player there based on the fact that every single player stared at him INTENTLY to see what he'd do.
did u watch other players and how GGs reaction to them!!
Wrong boring🥱
Something to ponder upon...why most of the comments is only to describe Guthrie's technique and people being amazed by his playing? The answer to which is very simple, he is "THE BEST" among the rest! I hv been following this man since music made sense to me and undoubtedly IMHO I consider him as the one of the best musician there has ever been in the history.
I was going to say "This is all your fault, Yngwie!" And then Guthrie took a solo...
It's probably not toooo much of a stretch to say that Guthrie is mainly responsible for turning young rock guitarists onto improvisation.
Guthrie says in his interviews yngwie is big influence on him. I can see he shreds like Yngwie. More emotional and melodic. I think you should blame more Paul Gilbert'ish players.
I was implying that GG was by far the best here. His solos are so much more musical...
@@soidayo Exactly
diminished rule!! lol
When Guthrie and Petrucci played, It was like living in a new whole world.
Sometimes you want to jump into light speed, and Andy can do that.
Definitely a fan of John’s composing and playing.
But when it comes to jamming I can’t help but just bring outstanded by Guthrie’s mastery.
Look man haven’t you heard of Alan holdsworth he copied him
Take a listen jp never copied
8:00 Tosin Abasi's and Andy James' faces..

YES YES YES...I AGREE SO FUCK'N MUCH!!
Guthrie taking notes like no other... damnnnnnnnn
False ! GODhrie..

2:42 That pick attack, wtf? I literally thought there was a bird outside my window
It’s why John only really shreds on the neck pickup. Cheesy 80’s solos always be shredding in the sharpest sounding pickup
Mark Lowery Certain picks have a real 'chirp' sound to them too, like Dunlop Delrins
Silveral_ ahh I see
literally thought this the second i heard it😂😂
As a boy, Andy's and Tosin's solos in particular would've sounded like the coolest thing in the world to me. As a man, I can appreciate how skilful and technically gifted the other 4 players are while knowing that Guthrie is in a class entirely of his own
man at 11:40 John's 90's style started coming back out. I always loved his lead playing during that era. There's just something unique about it that helps me to relax and calm my mind, especially when I'm having extreme waves of depression like right now. Something about his playing always manages to lift my spirits and make me feel better. These guys are all phenomenal. Hopefully things will work out so that I can make it to 3.0!
Perry D John is such a healer..
That exactly right my man
That's what am trying to put sense to kids out here who is blind folded follow Guthrie ignoring master himself petrucci.
