  • Nurse Lucy Letby, who was unmasked as the UK's most prolific child serial killer in modern times, has been given a whole-life sentence with no chance of parole.
    The 33 year old was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six other infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
    Letby deliberately injected babies with air, force-fed others milk and poisoned two of the infants with insulin.
    She refused to appear in the dock for her sentencing hearing.
    Letby will face the rest of her life behind bars, becoming only the fourth woman in UK history to receive such a sentence.

    As a mother who had a premature baby born in Kingston hospital at 1pound 14 ounces, I can't until this day thank them enough for the love and the care they gave to my daughter, and she is now 20, all the things we went thru medically the neonatal nurse and doctors were amazing,sometimes I look on her and cried how blessed I am, so to see someone like her did this horror and taint the medical field she should be in court while getting her sentence they need to change this law, very cold hearted she is and disrespectful.

    As an American I realize our justice system needs a lot of work. The fact that the uk doesn't require the defendent to listen to both impact statements and attend sentencing is insane to me. The whole point of victim impact statements is to be able to look the defendent in the eye and tell them how horrible they are. Seems like the defendent not being there takes a lot of the catharsis out of it.

      Like many I am appalled that she is unable to be compelled to attend, but I do understand that coercing an unwilling prisoner to the dock could be disruptive, and perhaps besmirch the dignity of the murdered victims. However I do think judges should be able to stray from sentencing guidelines if the convicted chooses not to attend. Of course it does not apply in this case as she has been given a whole life tariff, but it could be that refusal to attend could result in more rigorous conditions being met before parole can be considered.
      Honestly, I'm not trying to score points on US vs. UK, I was struck by the patience of the judge in the Darrel Brooks case, and how easy it appeared for the clown to try and run the circus.

Then there is the hospital management who did nothing and threatened to punish the doctors who raised concerns over her . You're so right, the hospital management should be charged with negligence as they are also accountable for patient safety. When the events (babies died) kept happening in a very short period, they should be aware and initiate the investigation. Patient safety is the prime priority, but obviously, the management looked at the hospital's reputation and profits before the patient life. This is criminal, and they should be sentenced too.

The managers and those responsible for the inaction by not investigating this when it was first made known to them, should be held to account, both legally and by the relearn hospital trusts. Whilst no sentence can ever bring a loved one back, I have to applaud the judge in this case, a sentence that (legally) fits the crime.

    Lucy Letby (born: 4 January, 1990) is a British serial killer and former neonatal nurse.
    From 2015 to 2016 she attacked at least thirteen babies in her care, killing seven of them.
    Letby was arrested in July 2018 in connection with a series of unusually frequent infant deaths between June 2015 and June 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, where she had worked as a neonatal nurse since 2011.
    After being released on bail she was re-arrested in June 2019 and again in November 2020 in connection with additional infant deaths at the hospital.
    On the day after her final arrest she was charged with eight counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
    At the conclusion of her trial, which lasted from October 2022 to August 2023, she was found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others during the twelve-month period, making her the most prolific serial killer of children in modern British history.
    On 21 August 2023, she opted not to attend court for her sentencing - and in her absence, Justice Goss sentenced her to life imprisonment, with a whole life order.

    Unfortunately, my experience, and many, many others, of the nursing staff currently employed by the NHS, is that there are far more abusive nurses at work on hospital wards, than anyone would like to imagine. I’m certain that there are plenty of Lucy Letby’s as yet undiscovered operating within the NHS. The management doesn’t seem to care to do anything about the open casual bullying, humiliation and petty cruel behaviour towards patients, indulged in routinely by their nurses; it’s definitely not a stretch to realise that plenty more serious crimes are being committed on a daily basis by medical staff across UK hospitals. Who’s going to stop it? The hospital bosses, as demonstrated by this case, only seem interested in trying to cover things up; and all the doctors who’ve crawled out of the woodwork to say they tried to raise their concerns over Letby, they could’ve gone to the police themselves, or left an anonymous tip off, but didn’t actually do anything to save those babies either.
    It’s time we woke up and got rid of our traditional misty-eyed image of nurses as automatically being altruistic angels, beyond reproach. Some of them are thoroughly nasty bullies, and a hospital full of bedridden, infirm, vulnerable patients is their ideal hunting ground for victims to target and abuse, apparently unchecked by anyone. Others are too scared of losing their jobs, being branded a whistleblower, to speak up. Having spent 4 months on a hospital ward 2 years ago, it was quite frankly shocking how cruel most of the nurses were. Be seriously concerned about needing to be admitted to hospital in the UK, because there are some absolutely awful people working there.

    • @ivo7418
      @ivo7418 11 місяців тому +1

      @lornaginetteharrison7168 When you were on the wards, what was the proportion of nurses being nasty in terms of socio-economic background and special category data? Was there any group(s) that particularly stood out? Or was it quite even across the board?

    • @lornaginetteharrison7168
      @lornaginetteharrison7168 11 місяців тому +5

      @@ivo7418 Pretty much even across the board. I think bullies exist in all walks of life. Lots of different nationalities, including British. Quite a few were agency staff, getting paid a higher wage for doing the same work as permanent NHS roles, so there was a bit of a resentful divide between the two cliques, with bad attitudes on each side. They seemed to take obvious delight in petty acts of cruelty, deliberately leaving food out of incapacitated patients’ reach, leaving bright lights on over your bed at night so you couldn’t sleep…if you pleaded with them to turn them off, they’d do so for a couple of minutes, then switch them on full blast again, and laugh and walk away.
      What was common for all of them was an apparent decision that if any patients needed help during the last hour of the nurses’ shift, they’d be ignored and told that they’d have to wait for the next shift for assistance. Then the next shift would ignore them for at least the first hour of their shift. So you can imagine that several patients were left in pain, or needing help using a bedpan if they were bedridden, particularly the elderly. If they couldn’t hold it, they’d be left in wet/dirty sheets for a couple of hours, then told off for messing themselves. This was obviously very demeaning and humiliating. They often wouldn’t pull the curtains around the bed for privacy either so everyone could see the patient being changed.
      Two nurses would regularly make cruel comments about my scars (it was a burn ward, and I had suffered third degree burns to 25% of my body). It was during the pandemic lockdown, so I guess the hospital was desperate for whatever staff they could get. But this meant us patients were even more isolated and vulnerable, because we weren’t allowed any visitors at all. We were effectively cut off from the outside world.
      I (somehow!) managed to break my fibula nearly two weeks ago, just walking on the flat wearing flat shoes. I was *_extremely_* reluctant to go to hospital again, to have it checked out. I was all for leaving it, but I was talked into going to a local hospital. I nearly left the waiting room numerous times during my 6 and a half hour wait to be assessed (by a nurse), but the relative who was with me made me stay.
      When I eventually went for an x-ray, it was absolute bedlam in the corridors. An elderly gentleman with a broken hip, who was desperate for the loo, was told to urinate into a bottle in front of everyone. We all did our best to look away, but the clearly annoyed nurse made this poor man stand up, with his broken hip, in the middle of the corridor, wearing only a gown and an adult nappy, and basically expose himself to the whole waiting room. I’m pretty sure he was crying, but at that moment I was finally called through for my x-ray. If patients are routinely treated so appallingly, without any dignity at all, right out in the open, it’s no wonder that more serious abuse goes on unchecked behind the scenes.
      Apologies for rambling on! I’m just worried at the moment, because there’s still a chance that I’ll need to be admitted into hospital again for an operation to have two screws placed into the break in my ankle, if it doesn’t heal properly. They initially gave me the wrong air cast/boot to wear for the first week, so I was essentially walking around on it potentially doing more damage to my ankle. I’m praying that I won’t ever need to stay as an inpatient at a hospital ever again.

    "Life is a train with no return journey. From a small bed when we were born to a small box when we leave the world, we can take nothing away. What we enjoy is just a process. In this process, nothing can be kept. Therefore, we must learn to overcome troubles and abandon attachments. In this world, we need to be enlightened from the heart, to change ourselves, to see through quickly, and to be enlightened. Many people can't let go of their attachments throughout their lives: "This is mine, that's mine." In the end, there is nothing left. I don't think there is any utility in using words like 'evil' as a descriptor in cases like this even if it makes feel people feel better. This should be looked at logically and scientifically without having the lines blurred by superstition. The best outcome would be for medical staff to be screened for personality disorders in future before they are employed.

    A lot more focus needs to be on Mental Health workers who are frequently implicated in patients' mental deterioration and also many suicides.
