When I bought Gardiner's earlier recording (modern instruments) in the late 70's, excellent as it was, the brilliance of this performance was unimaginable. What a perfection historically-informed performances have achieved! And how abundant the singers who can do justice to this music! Bliss!
A performance on an intimate & modest scale like this reveals little tiny details & subtle shade in dynamics etc.from both choir and orchestra which a grand scale one can’t achieve as they are all overwhelmed in the big overall sound. This is truly a special Dixie Dominus of which it can be said (to paraphrase Beethoven) “go to Lionel Meunière and his ensemble to learn how to achieve great effects, by such simple means!” Needless to say, this performance is sui generis and one that I shall often return to when I want to hear one of Handel’s great compositions.
Such an elegant piece, such a passionate performance of it. Much more than mere "Beauty": ethereal, heavenly, stirring, dynamic, inspiring, captivating . . . not to mention the singers and players, who are nothing short of consummate professionals. Such virtuosity! What a gem. I wasn't familiar with it. Now I'm going to have to chase down Vox Luminus and listen to more of them!
Dixit Dominus.
Small ensable, huge effect in superb deliverance, combination of geniuses in talent. Prestine quality of all artists - so thankful this platform can bring this beautiful music to our enjoyment! Thank you to all
sometimes, not often, I honestly regret that a particular composition or performance didn't appear earlyer in my life. It would have been an inspiring and consoling companion for so much longer, but so it goes. Thank you so much, you all. By the way, in this registration I do recognize so well from my own concerts the many minor incidents like the 'last moment page turning tenors' right at the beginning and the (most admirable) soprano barely getting her balance somewhat in order right before starting the virtuoso singing at 31'58" - the smile just one second later says it all.
This performance had it all: drama elegance virtuosity and transparence. I have heard many and performed it many times and i find this to be ideal Kudos.
Psalmus David. Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum. 2 Virgam virtutis tuae emittet Dominus ex Sion: dominare in medio inimicorum tuorum. 3 Tecum principium in die virtutis tuae in splendoribus sanctorum: ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te. 4 Juravit Dominus, et non poenitebit eum: Tu es sacerdos in aeternum secundum ordinem Melchisedech. 5 Dominus a dextris tuis; confregit in die irae suae reges. 6 Judicabit in nationibus, implebit ruinas; conquassabit capita in terra multorum. 7 De torrente in via bibet; propterea exaltabit caput.
An ensemble that is small in size won't necessarily need one. Also, during the Baroque Period, the audiences were usually members of the aristocracy and pieces such as this one were often performed at their homes as entertainment.
Best version ever ;)
Insane crazy speed for the last few pages!!!

Wonderful performance. Love the balance and delicate ensemble work.
An excellent performance of this masterpiece. Such passion and commitment from all the musicians!

If Gardiner´s version is grate, this is magnificient!! ❤❤

They don't have a conductor but the artistic director is the tallest singer next to the short tenors (lionel meunier)
@@aeliuscaius He doesn't beat time, but the intensity of his facial expressions and gestures can't help but catch the corners of the singers' eyes.
Better version than John Elliot Gardiner. I like this much more.

In the Royal Chapel of the Château de Versailles
