Karl Richter is the greatest interpreter of J.S.Bach and Handles music ! Karl Richter was a personal friend of my parents and I was taken by my father Frits Henker in Hamburg to a meeting with him. I was just a little girl ! The last time I saw Karl Richter in Geneva walking through a restaurant 1969.

This organ is the sound of the soul
Without Handel and his great performers such as Richter and these performers ,
the classical music world would have been very lonely and insipid
    And
the enjoyment and pleasures of the classical music would have been less
    From

The recording is from 1972 it says above. Sounds very like my LP recording from 1960-62 (according to the label design). Nevertheless this is a pure analog recording with (for the time) state of the art equipment and professional (german) technicians. Of course it is balanced... They had no modern digital equipment to tweak the sound... :-) This is old school, and its still VERY delightful... Even with the limited bandwith on YT. Still loves my LP recording though, with its "hacks", "hacks", "hacks" and noise where you can really feel the space in the hall (church?) they are playing in. :-)

It’s impossible for me to imagine just how anyone can perform and precisely conduct, let alone read and interpret the score at the same time. Yet this is what Karl Richter did as a matter of routine every day of his creative life. To see his right hand at 8:03 so deftly play the melody, whilst his left hand pick out the syncopated theme is miraculous and a privilege to watch, whilst at the same time directing the orchestra with deft left hand timely gestures. He was gifted beyond measure. And again at 11:58, he turns to the orchestra, nods and with his right hand motions with a relaxed and confident style, as natural as a leaf caught in the wind. Pure genius. I’m now 78 and Karl Richter has been a part of my musical life for over 65 years since I first discovered Bach, Handel et al and the joys of baroque music.

I've always found the live performances given by Richter are immaculate in both production and camera work. The quality of composition is indisputable as indeed is the sound quality.
Some older recordings by other interpreters can look and sound dated but his interpretation and musical direction is always acoustically vibrant.

Wow! In the last years I watch this video several times from beginning to end... how to thumbs up more than one time? Love it! Karl Richter, Karajan, Pinnock, Pavarotti, Kurt Moll, and a few more were my "idols" in my young times on the end of 1970s and 1980s. Incomparable. How I miss them!

I am most impressed with the clarity of the organ reproduction on this video, beside it being played by Karl Richter. I seem to remember having seen this on German TV back in the 70's ?.

According to the Oxford Composer Companion: "In the 1970s, according to Nicholas Anderson, 'with the growing interest in historically aware performance...Richter's values were questioned'; in 1981, 'a victim of passing fashion and changing taste, he died an embittered man.'" But I believe that Bach's music is so highly adaptable that in the final analysis a convincing performance is a valid performance.

He had quite a few hands and legs to play the organ and to pull the stops! Then there was another hand to conduct! And then there was still a last hand to chain smoke all day long. No joke! He was a genius and sort of a human octopus!

Olipa kerta kaikkiaan hieno konsertti 70-luvun alusta.
