I'm pretty sure Handel did not expect his soloists to whisper every 10 seconds. I can't tell her trill from her vibrato. Why does she vibrato in the quick florid runs? baritone has no ring, quite dry, can they hear him through the brass? I'm thinking it needs a voice more like Ramey.
Reminds me of Christmas in my house when I was young…amazing! Me singing each aria and chorus (mezzo soprano) while my parents and I cooked our dinner. This recording came in a boxed set of about 3 or 4 records with a beautiful cobalt linen cover with gorgeous gold script: Handel”s Messiah, Dublin 1742, Sir. Neville Mariner, the Academy of St-Martin-in-the-Fields. Fun times…they supported my classical career and I hope that my music made them proud. They were the source of my music, though…and pieces like these were part of our lives; An amazing thing for two working-class people who couldn’t sing or play an instrument, but wanted their musical daughter to have every advantage. What a magnificent upbringing, and what marvelous parents. I could not have had better.

@@felicescantushandel5596 Thank you so much! The work moves me to nostalgic tears, as well. It is a testament to the power of exceptional music played with both proficiency and intentionality, and Maestro Marriner always did BOTH. You had to not only be GOOD at the Academy, you had to be fully PRESENT to play under him. You can literally tell this in the quality of the recordings and in the videos that exist. I wish I could have sung anything, anywhere that he conducted...it would have been a dream come true. As it stands, I did get to sing under some phenomenal conductors in both chorus and as a soloist. Thank you, again, for posting this! And a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and a Happy New Year to you!

I have to say that I believe that this one is by far the best rendition I've heard. A complete, superb masterpiece by everyone, everyone. Even the video work is marvelous showing the joy of the cobductor, the soloists, the Orchestra and the marvelous choral singers. A superb work by all. Thank you so, so much. Great opera, wonderful singing, utterly ridiculous setting and scenography. No, ridiculous is to put it mildly, it is an utter betrayal of the spirit of the work and the music. Better watched with all the image taken off.
Le Concert Délation a bien des difficultés à ne pas faire de couacs et à commencer les phrases au même instant. En cause? La sotte prétention à vouloir jouer cette musique royale à fond les ballons et à croire, non pas au Bon dieu mais au Père Noël et penser qu'au premier virage on va pouvoir éviter le platane qui nous tend les bras. C'est en effet le concert des Nations Européennes qui ne sait plus ce qu'elle est, d'où elle vient, ni pourquoi elle joue. Continuez comme ça les gars, avec Jordi Savamal... Et ça ne va pas aller en s'arrangeant... On peut toujours compter aussi sur l'enchanteur Merlin qui mène tout cela tambour battant.
Ah! Ces chefs d'orchestre "baroqueux". Tous tentés de jouer ces partitions comme Karl Richter ou Jean-François Paillard mais obligés de se réfréner pour faire en sorte, qu'à tous prix, leurs interprétations ne puissent pas être similaires. Ça nie l'évidence, ça cherche la petite bête, ça accélère, alors qu'on sent bien qu'ils sont mis devant l'éclatante vérité, c'est bien comme ces deux-là qu'il faudrait diriger. C'est bien fait pour eux, et c'est ce qui se passe quand on veut se croire plus malins et intellectualiser une musique qui vient droit du cœur. Ces insincérités finiront par disparaître car ils sont tous au bord de la tombe ou déjà partis pour une éternité que je ne leur souhaite pas tranquille ni apaisée.
