  • A months back we planted sprouting organic Russet Burbank (baking potatoes) we didn't get around to eating in one of our grow bags. So before we harvest the last of the grow bags we planted at the beginning of summer Tom adds soil around the base of the growing plants to encourage more underground stalk growth out from which the plant will produce the tubers. The potatoes we eat are actually the underground nutrient storage vessels of the potato plant after it has finished producing above ground foliage.
The rest of the video shows harvesting the last of the grow bags. It was planted in early summer and not mid-Spring which would have been ideal. Also we used rather poor potting soil which was also less than ideal and not loose and a bit sandy. Furthermore we used no fertilizers. So it was all an experiment for us who know a lot about the history and social importance of potatoes but little to nothing about how to grow them in containers. Years ago we grew successfully some 30 different varieties in our gardens in Belgium and Virginia. We hope to do it all differently next year after absorbing the wisdom and tips offered by the many potato container gardeners who share their techniques on You Tube.
