    I really admire your meta level understanding of your own learning proces. Everyone gets frustrated when trying to learn something on their own, but not everyone can take a step back and say "yeah, im frustrated because of x and y, and i should be doing a and b to progress". Rooting for you : )

    I just want to say you're really inspirational. I've loved drawing since i was a child, but it is so easy to get lost in your own frustration.
    I tend to get lost all the time and frustrated with myself for not being perfect, and because of this, i forgot why i loved drawing so much in the first place .
    Drawing the things i love and that i enjoy was why i loved it so much.
    It was so fun to see improvements from the struggles, what your doing isn't easy, but you should be proud of yourself 😁.
    At 22 im drawing what i love again and people like you keep inspiring me to not give up on myself ,afterall my art isent perfect, but its not meant to be , imperfection is art and thats why i love it! .
    Keep going , i know you'll get the careers you desire! Your art is awesome, dont let anyone tell you otherwise! Never quit even if you're down , u got this!🏆 🔥

    Please keep talking about your journey as an artist!! These videos are really well made and i love your sense of humour. Its really awesome seeing a beginner artist sharing their journey in such a chill and down-to-earth manner, and i think its really important for other beginner artists to see that while being an artist has it's ups and downs, its not some sort of herculean task

    This is incredible, seriously good job. The way you were talking about your work and how you expressed your frustration is stuff I’ve basically said word for word myself, and I’ve been drawing my entire life. Making art never stops being hard, so hopefully you’re not being too hard on yourself for not getting it immediately. What you’re trying to do is a huge task for anyone, but you really understand how to learn and keep yourself going, and you’re showing so many people that none of this is impossible, including myself. I applied to this program myself, and I’m really inspired by what you do. I’ll be sticking around for more of your work!

    Bro you are going to be soo strong after this. You are really pushing yourself in a way that the art has improved so much. I would continue to break down things into simple shapes to understand how things move and work to make it easier to draw.
    For this project specifically, I would've suggested to understand the design choices for each nation as to way things are designed the way they were to help with your character design. For example, I made an original fire nation character who's style is different from the Kung Fu of the Fire Nation. This meant his armor was different as it reflected his style of fighting but still resemble fire nation attributes.
    Understanding why things work the way they do always helps and makes it easier to apply it to your work. This is true with understanding history, math, art, etc.

    • @jakeonart
      @jakeonart  9 місяців тому +4

      Yeah I really wish I had the time to go in depth with the character design. It's so cool when you can refer to real world history and styles and apply it to your character. I'll definitely do this in the future

    I get that this was a sprint because of the application deadline, but please take breaks! Your body will eventually break down if you don't get your sleep and take care of yourself. Sleep, hydrate, eat, and remember to do wrist stretches to prevent cramps and carpal tunnel - you can look these up online. Prevention is better than treatment! If you tire yourself out too much you'll end up losing time overall because you'll eventually sleep in, or your speed will go down, or your quality (or even all at once). Especially since you're trying to learn - not getting enough sleep will make your brain not learn as effectively.

    Great video! Ive been also trying to teach myself drawing for about a year now (mainly inspired by Avatar The Last Airbender, but also by the Spider Verse Movie(s) and also Jim lee and japanese anime in general) but I always kept losing my focus/getting frustrated or making excuses not to draw and instead did something else, mostly procrastinating stuff. But seeing you and your progress really has had me picking up my pencil again and really try to stay consistent at it (well for at least 2-3 weeks for now but surely more to come!) keep grinding man!

      I realized that you shouldn't wait around for inspiration because you can't count on it to hit consistently. Find what inspires you and use that as a way to get in the right headspace when you don't feel as inspired. For me, before I start drawing I might read some one piece, watch an episode of avatar, read blue period, etc. and it really inspires me to practice so I can do stuff like that some day - hopefully that answered your question!

    Funny enough, 😂 this is actually the best way to learn how to draw, because this is exactly how kids learn how to draw.
    Most people overthink it, but whenever I try to track how I learned how to draw, it’s literally drawing characters from my favourite shows and twisting them to make my own characters and drawing my own comics of them over and over again.
    You’re literally the first grown guy who has been able to learn exactly like a kid would. CONGRATS. You’re already making the PROs jealous 😂🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Ok I'm gonna throw out my two cents of what you're really doing wrong here- coming from a 42 year old animator and illustrator with 2 degrees in animation and about twenty years of comic making behind me. BUT- I'm still struggling too so what do I know.
    Might sound harsh- but I'm not trying to spend an hour here adding a bunch soft landing words. Honest crit is harsh, but I'm not trying to be mean at all. You have drive and that is maybe the most important thing.
    First point- you can barely draw a solid character standing in a basic pose, and then you are like yeah I'm gonna do the Zhoa stomp shot- which btw is one of the most expert level animation shots AOT. The level of skill and know-how for that shot is above most animators working today- and it was also HIGHLY referenced work. Probably not roto- but absolutely referenced from video. Start Smaller dude. Or at the very least- less complicated. It wil also help with motivation- the feeling of bringing art to life is incredible and its incredible when its simple as well as when its complicated.
    Secondly you really need to work more rough at first- look at the difference between the pencil animation of something from Glen Keane vs what it looks like after its been cleaned up. (And I don't mean colored on a cell- I mean cleaned pencils vs rough pencils.) You move characters in the rough stage. Your animation work should be rough and sketchy in every frame to get the acting and movement down before you ever try to clean it up. The problem here is we see all these pencil drawings from japan with super tight line work and yellow and red pencil shading and we think that is early in the process. And yes for some of them it is- but those are the best of the best and they have been doing it upwards of 16 hours a day for years and years and years. The skill it takes to make those final drawings is different than the skill it takes to move them beforehand.
    Lastly- bounce a ball, swing a pendulum, animate a flag and bring a flour sack to life. Learn the basics. Do some life drawing. Draw poses of people out of balls and cylinders. Good luck- sincerely.

    • @jakeonart
      @jakeonart  4 місяці тому

      Thank you so much for the advice! You're so right about biting off more than I can chew and wasting time stressing about clean lines. Gonna really focus on the basics and getting proper form/anatomy/gesture down. Again, really appreciate it.
