Hey Jake, I just want to say it's actually a little surprising how invested I am on your art journey. I just checked at what date you upload this video, and I was disappointed to learn that it had been only a few days from now. I was hoping to possibly find some new content to binge, but unfortunately not. Thank you for making this video, as an artist, it's always interesting seeing what beginners are discovering. Also, my guess as to why you couldn't draw an original character after 'practicing', was probably because you didn't actually practice. To make an original character, you need to practice gesture, yes, but you also need to practice character design. Shape design. Creating characters based off of prompts, and studying characters made by other artists. Eventually, you'll also need to learn how to draw clothing folds, and you will need to study lots of different clothing styles, definitely relying on pinterest or any other software that offers a constant source of inspirations and ideas. You never practiced any of these in the video, so I understand why your characters came out a bit average. It might also help to know what character you want to draw beforehand; Is your character evil? Draw them a little pointier. Etc. You need to know your character in order to create an unique character design.

This is so encouraging! Subscribed! I'm trying to learn to draw and this felt a lot more valuable than looking at flip throughs from people miles ahead of my ability. It's still better than I can do but it doesn't feel completely unachievable and the progress is clear to see! Gives me some hope for myself 🤞🏾
Mad respect. I’m a webtoon major student and recently I haven’t draw for a while because it was so boring and didn’t have fun at all. But watching your video and seeing that you draw because you having fun and keep going on and on made me motivated and I wanna enjoy drawing just like you. Great video and I hope you have fun on your art journey.
hey dude, thanks so much for this video. its incredibly inspiring to see the progess over the weeks and its a good reminder that growth isnt linear and i really love how honest you are. i wish you the very very best for your animated show!!!
This is so cool to see! I’m in the same boat, really wanted to learn how to draw and design my own characters so I started 3 weeks ago, can definitely relate to learning something new and then thinking “wow that’s cool I’ll try drawing a character from my imagination now” only for it to not look good at all haha. The progress you made in just 100 days was awesome! Keep up the good work 👍🏾
If you wanna learn better anatomy you can look up george bridgman cause his theories and methods definitely helped me alot and it might also help you design your own character better but keep up the good work you doing great
Although this is 7 months old and you might of understood this by now but do you think you can't draw your own character but are really good at following the reference is because when you follow the reference you aren't trying to learn but just copy
I am trying to learn how to draw as a person who had some artistic talent in other things that aren't visual media (music, theater). Not sure what your background is but it's really, really encouraging for me to see a person be candid and show all the beginner sketches, express frustration, and see steady improvement (and knowing improvement is not linear and drawing/illustration is a set of skills, not a single skill) so, thanks for making and sharing.
you're doing incredible progress for a beginner! I'm so impressed. you really show that you want to be good at it, and you practice a lot and it's shows! good job man!
I've been challenging myself to do 100 days of gesture drawing. I'm up to day 75 as of yesterday. It really helps to do one concept for a long time, and I would definitely suggest it since getting good enough at gesture that the proportions and storytelling comes naturally would really help your animation goal. I don't know how you could turn that into good UA-cam content but I got my inspiration from a fitness UA-camr Uce Gang who's doing 100 weeks of going to the gym. Anyway you're doing great, there are a lot of tutorials methods etc...but the thing I'm realizing is that the most important thing is just drawing miles and miles of lines on paper over a very long time.
You seem to be under the wrong impression that you have to draw without reference. Every great artist uses references constantly, every great artist advice others to KEEP using references. The only thing you have to keep in mind is to not copy a drawing 1 for 1. But if you want, let's say, to draw your own character portrait looking up towards the sky, get some references of heads looking towards the sky, pick one and modify that head with your character's features: THAT's how you learn. Good luck and just don;t give up 👍
This is what my sketch book looked like when I picked up drawing again a few years into college after not drawing since High school. I got demotivated seeing all these, what you called, Picasso level sketchbooks on UA-cam, thinking I wasn't improving fast enough, or it's too late for me. I wish I kept going because I feel like I'm back at square one again lol Great video, time to start drawing again.
this is nonsense, like i am a comic artist and what you do is draw draw and draw till you get better than your peak in years you just change skin more than once. Theres no thing like 30 days 100 days 1000 days practise and you become something its diffirent fr everyone selfs, i am just saying don't get imitate this ...
I took pictures of each of my drawings, put them into the photoshop to darken the lines, and then put each picture into a sequence premiere. Yeah you could definitely do it on your phone with any free editing app!
@@jakeonart I’ve been recently wanting to start my own manga and I did and it’s going really good there’s still some stuff I gotta work on but I’m getting there
As someone who used to try and draw manga like akira toriyama I want to do so along with Ken sugimori art colors. I want to practice and learn now but don’t know where to start with manga.
I would say ditch learning "Anatomy" and learn different ways to construct the body with basic shapes. Anatomy is complex and is something you should learn latter on. Learn proportions and practice putting together basic shapes ( in perspective ).
most of your dissatisfaction with your drawings stem from a lack of line weight. i'd recommend learning that next, as it can help significantly with making your art look more 3-dimentional and interesting. most of your drawings you sort of try to do this by drawing the same line multiple times, but it looks messy, so try to replace that with clean, (thicker in some cases too) lines for far better results.
We're the complete opposite. I have a fear of using references because I'm quite impatient and It sucks when I finish. So most of my drawings are drawn from imagination, which in my opinion, hinders me from improving. Can I ask, how you keep your patience when drawing from references?
I guess to me I get a lot of satisfaction out of being able to replicate the reference. However I always choose reference of characters or scenes that I really like, so maybe try finding your favorite stuff to use as reference. Makes it a lot more exciting!
To see another beginner artist’s sketch book was so soothing. It gave me courage that other people are going through this process too. I guess we just have to keep our focus on being able to draw whatever we want one day
this is so funny cause when you said you drew luffy over and over again, I had the same experience back in my earlier days of drawing. Basically I thought If i just kept drawing giorno, then I would perfect it to the point where I can draw better. It worked in some degree but not really anything significant.
You have done a really good job for three months. I also want to be able to draw anything my mind can imagine and I took an online course to learn fundamentals. Even if sometime i get frustrated for not to be able to achieve my goal yet , I continue to learn and enjoy drawing some basic stuff. I hope that you will achieve your goal and then both of us finally be able to draw by imagination
PLEASE DON'T STOP. IM FOLLOWING YOUR VIDS LIKE WATCHING AN ANIME EACH WEEK KEEP GOING! KEEP IMPORVING! YOU'RE AMAZING! I WANT TO SEE YOUR IMPROVMENT AFTER A YEAR! AAAAHHHHHH IM SO EXITED FOR YOU!
Love to see stuff like this, they bright up my day! On a side note, while i draw only out of boredome while studying, I realized I became pretty good in drawing body an muscle as a side effect of my bodybuilding hobby. I guess that when you get used to see so many times somethig, you also become a little better at drawing it.
I think it would help if your illustration by just drawing expressions using eyes, nose and mouths. If you can capture those points consistently it will help then overall realism of a portrait. I just fill up pages with those three features being angry, sad, happy, sly, exhausted . I started from straight on the started drawing them from different angles. It seemed to help me capture a likeness a lot easier.
I'm not great at drawing and I'm kind of stuck with doing ok when looking at references but badly when not using any reference, I found a few good ways to make my own characters and still be able to use references the one I use the most is coming up with a list of stuff about a character how I want them to look and then putting it into an ai art generator and then drawing it myself using that as a reference and fixing the ai glitchyness along the way, the second way is just getting references for individual bits and pieces, like one for pose another for a hair style, one for clothing parts ect.

I didn't take it very seriously until recently, but since I'm familiar with art, I know a lot of what my own art lacks and how I can improve it.
So, if you want to improve fast, try to familiarize yourself with other fundamentals. Learn from the masters. Really, go wild, since there are a lot of things to discover, some more fun than others.
@@superplaylists1616 Hell yeah awesome. Yeah I get in a loop of learning some fundamentals, trying something ambitious, realizing it looks awful because I'm missing big fundamentals, and then going back and learning fundamentals
I love this video for many of the reasons others described BUT, where can I get my hands on that Atlanta poster behind you my guy!?
I got it off redbubble a few years ago!
do you have any perefered art style from any artists?
Edit: I also recommend How To Draw Like a Sir, he has some great tutorials
That's a great question - I love Miyazaki a lot, and the animation team behind Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo - in terms of actual painters not sure haha - What kind of style do you like? Also yes I've been watching tons of him!
Ummm..... I love you. LOL this is great! SUBBED! (:
Haha thank you!!!
Been picking art back up again since having dropped it quite a while ago, and having searched for "month of art practice" came your channel. Your videos are quite nice and have even provided me some insight that I've never heard. Besides that, your development in merely three months is exceptional. It truly shows as a testament to what dedication, learning, practice, and reflection provides.
I am looking forward to seeing how your skill develops in the next month, and in a year from now. Thank you for posting your beginner's journey, it gives insight that a masters' tutorial can't replicate.
I really appreciate it!! What kind of art do you like making?
@@jakeonart Focusing on anime style art right now, but I would like to push into other mediums like realism and such. When I like something, I get my hands dirty, so I want to explore as much of art as I can - different genres, styles, etc..
I will try to continue growing just as much as you are, one step at a time.
@@slurck Sweet - I think I'm in a similar boat to you
have you watched some tutorials by draw like a sir by any chance? cause the upper body at 0:52 looks like his version, oh and btw nice vid
that's exactly what it's from lmao good eye
I've always wanted to make my own animated show too😂😂❤❤
Hell yeahh!
Funny admission... I flipped from a drawing tutorial to your video and thought "is this guy having a stroke? His words are so drawn out and..... Oh im still on .75% speed" lol. Glad you didnt have a stroke 🙂
Me too :)
It was nice to see your drawings and the improvements that you have made along the way. Also nice to see you poke fun at your work because I know how hard we as humans can be on ourselves. Keep up the work!
Thank you so much!
YOU CAN DO IT!!!
When my man said, “fuck the fundamentals, I just wanna draw anime characters.” I felt that, felt it in my soul. Lmao.
hahaha sometimes I can't be bothered to draw anything else
Mad respect. I’m a webtoon major student and recently I haven’t draw for a while because it was so boring and didn’t have fun at all. But watching your video and seeing that you draw because you having fun and keep going on and on made me motivated and I wanna enjoy drawing just like you. Great video and I hope you have fun on your art journey.
That's great! Draw whatever gets you motivated to draw!
Remember me when your famous
Awesome video. Very motivating. Time to pull my sketchbooks out!
Hell yeah thank you!!
come algorithm, here boy
doing the lords work
hey dude, thanks so much for this video. its incredibly inspiring to see the progess over the weeks and its a good reminder that growth isnt linear and i really love how honest you are. i wish you the very very best for your animated show!!!
Keep up the good work 👍🏾
Its SO much harder doing it from imagination and it seems like i learn that lesson a lot haha - you keep it up too!!
I'm about to start my journey too! Can't wait to share that with you but this video was great for getting me motivated! The hardest part is starting!
LETS GO!!! I would love to see what you make!! What kind of art are you interested in?
@@jakeonart I work as a 3D artist in the games industry but I'm trying to make the transition to concept art using the Art Wod system
@@DigitalArtcast Damn that’s so cool!! What’s the art wod system?
Omg I started drawing a week ago to create my own manga slash anime, its funny because all i been drawing is Luffy in bodys same as you
Drawing Luffy is the the ultimate artist pipeline
If you wanna learn better anatomy you can look up george bridgman cause his theories and methods definitely helped me alot and it might also help you design your own character better but keep up the good work you doing great
Thank you so much - I'll make sure to look him up!!
Although this is 7 months old and you might of understood this by now but do you think you can't draw your own character but are really good at following the reference is because when you follow the reference you aren't trying to learn but just copy
Im 15 And I Still Didn't Find Any Fun Goals In My Life Is Drawing Fun?
I can appreciate a fellow yeti mic holder YEEHAW 💪
I am trying to learn how to draw as a person who had some artistic talent in other things that aren't visual media (music, theater). Not sure what your background is but it's really, really encouraging for me to see a person be candid and show all the beginner sketches, express frustration, and see steady improvement (and knowing improvement is not linear and drawing/illustration is a set of skills, not a single skill) so, thanks for making and sharing.
you're doing incredible progress for a beginner! I'm so impressed. you really show that you want to be good at it, and you practice a lot and it's shows! good job man!
Thank you I really appreciate it!
100% agree - taking the time to really focus on a specific skill consistently has helped the most. Let me know how it went once you get to 100 days!
I have like 6 sketchbooks and you could really see how i progressed. So seeing something like this. Sure
Good luck and just don;t give up 👍
Got it. Slowly learning that lesson haha
This is what my sketch book looked like when I picked up drawing again a few years into college after not drawing since High school. I got demotivated seeing all these, what you called, Picasso level sketchbooks on UA-cam, thinking I wasn't improving fast enough, or it's too late for me. I wish I kept going because I feel like I'm back at square one again lol
Great video, time to start drawing again.
Damn, I didn't know about Watanabe's new show, also nice drawings man
Subbed cause same homie, FUCKING SAME
this is nonsense, like i am a comic artist and what you do is draw draw and draw till you get better than your peak in years you just change skin more than once. Theres no thing like 30 days 100 days 1000 days practise and you become something its diffirent fr everyone selfs, i am just saying don't get imitate this ...
I am literally at 0:53 for my drawings
Hey that's a great place to be, means you're learning fundamentals and you'll be drawing cool stuff in no time
Hey Jake, looks great man, I think I'll do this too now once I'm back at my own place
Lets gooooo!
@@jakeonart let's Go!!!
Um, can i ask how do you animate like for example in the hand video and is it possible to do it on a phone?
I took pictures of each of my drawings, put them into the photoshop to darken the lines, and then put each picture into a sequence premiere. Yeah you could definitely do it on your phone with any free editing app!
@@jakeonart Thanks.
That Yuji drawing was fire 🔥
Drawing Yuji was so fun - it's surely not my last sketches of him
@@jakeonart I’ve been recently wanting to start my own manga and I did and it’s going really good there’s still some stuff I gotta work on but I’m getting there
@@among_sasuke Woah that's awesome!! Are you gonna release it anywhere?
Seeing you fail making a character definitely helps cope with how long imma have to be learning.
Ok fine I'll rewatch blue period
8:42 ooooo a lefty
Your drawing is better than me I'm drawing like 2 years.
I used to draw regularly for 10 years and never produced anything good unfortunately.
Thank so much the other sketchbook seem so perfect too And makes me doubt my ability but your is the most perferct it's just realistic
This video looks like my 10 days of beginner drawing
-you are slow
The spike one is awesome imma sketch him soon! I’ve been doing a bit of hunter hunter and OP
As someone who used to try and draw manga like akira toriyama I want to do so along with Ken sugimori art colors. I want to practice and learn now but don’t know where to start with manga.
4:20 ayo NakeyJakey mentioned let's goooo. Nice video man. you're art is really good!
FINALLY someone commented about nakeyjakey thank you haha
I would say ditch learning "Anatomy" and learn different ways to construct the body with basic shapes. Anatomy is complex and is something you should learn latter on. Learn proportions and practice putting together basic shapes ( in perspective ).
Ok got it - I think that'll be a much better way of looking at things thank you!!
most of your dissatisfaction with your drawings stem from a lack of line weight. i'd recommend learning that next, as it can help significantly with making your art look more 3-dimentional and interesting. most of your drawings you sort of try to do this by drawing the same line multiple times, but it looks messy, so try to replace that with clean, (thicker in some cases too) lines for far better results.
Ok got it - I'll definitely look into that thank you so much!!
I think it's a fun way to get into character drawing, but yeah there's definitely more effective ways to actually learn to design characters
You are doing good job 👏
Thank you!!
Keep working on fundamentals and also draw anything
I love this, I’ve never watched a UA-cam channel like this, like yes let me see your whole journey young grasshopper
Should be an interesting ride to say the least
Yo that mugen page was sick I’d fight a thousand babies to get that on a T-shirt
That would be amazing - lets freakin do it
Nice man
PLEASE DON'T STOP. IM FOLLOWING YOUR VIDS LIKE WATCHING AN ANIME EACH WEEK KEEP GOING! KEEP IMPORVING! YOU'RE AMAZING! I WANT TO SEE YOUR IMPROVMENT AFTER A YEAR! AAAAHHHHHH IM SO EXITED FOR YOU!
I WILL I'LL KEEP GOING AHHHHH
Love to see stuff like this, they bright up my day!
On a side note, while i draw only out of boredome while studying, I realized I became pretty good in drawing body an muscle as a side effect of my bodybuilding hobby.
I guess that when you get used to see so many times somethig, you also become a little better at drawing it.
Totally! Understanding how something works goes such a long way
Gesture drawing has really leveled up my skills
I think it would help if your illustration by just drawing expressions using eyes, nose and mouths. If you can capture those points consistently it will help then overall realism of a portrait. I just fill up pages with those three features being angry, sad, happy, sly, exhausted . I started from straight on the started drawing them from different angles. It seemed to help me capture a likeness a lot easier.
Got it! That makes sense - i'll definitely try this out thank you!!
Subbed cause it takes real nuts to post your progress. Keep workin at it pimp. That bathroom sketch is hard af.
thanks pimp
I'm not great at drawing and I'm kind of stuck with doing ok when looking at references but badly when not using any reference, I found a few good ways to make my own characters and still be able to use references the one I use the most is coming up with a list of stuff about a character how I want them to look and then putting it into an ai art generator and then drawing it myself using that as a reference and fixing the ai glitchyness along the way, the second way is just getting references for individual bits and pieces, like one for pose another for a hair style, one for clothing parts ect.
This is a great strategy - i'll have to try it out, thank you!
eeeeewww why'd you draw yourself naked
ive been drawing for years and i still cant draw my own character
Fantastic. Well done.
At the 1.33 minute - your animation of the Oriental character is *brilliant*
