Holy moly, those studies for Lackadaisy-- I never realized the amount of prep studio animators do before even starting to animate anything. That's stunning. I absolutely loved this Manu! I learned a lot! You touched on a lot of stuff that most other creators I've seen don't mention at all when discussing similar topics.
Thank you Andreas! Honestly the prep part of learning the characters is incredibly fun to me, its like a license to draw a ton of fanart that will both improve your drawing skill + make your animaton work better down the line! Thanks for watching!!
As an animator in the Japanese animation industry, there’s usually no time to learn to draw characters, so we just learn as we draw. So what I did (can’t really speak for others) is picked up observational drawing and learnt anatomy such from bridgeman books. Once you have anatomy down and your hands and eyes are coordinated, you’ll be able to tell why certain details are designed as they are in comparison to the human body in terms of style and proportions. Eventually, you’ll find it easy to combine all the references you have to create heads that aren’t even on the reference sheets. This apples to everything from animals to humans to clothes. Also a little note, shift and trace is still largely used in the Japanese industry. I’ve received corrections from sou sakkan artists with shifted head corrections, it makes subtle character acting a thousand times easier, especially with detailed drawings
I’ve noticed this during my watch through of Dragon Ball and now I feel extra bad for the animators that had to constantly change the way they draw the series once the manga’s artstyle started shifting. Plus there was a longtime One Piece animator who came back for Super that took quite an amount of episodes to learn how to draw Dragon Ball again. I love the animation coming out of Japan but damn being part of the industry must be super hard.
@@sarcasticsuperjerk18 Oh yeah, you'll definitely pick up drawing habits from working on shows long term. No…. This is wrong. Hi, I’m a foundations drawing teacher. All you need to do is understand the foundations, then practice the lessons within those disciplines. the point you made by "drawing the emotion" is one of the most valuable pieces of art advice i have heard. it's been said a million times that it's easy to get caught up in details/proportions, but you demonstrated it on paper better than any other art youtuber i have watched. keep at it, manumercurial.

Wow Dane! Thank you so very much for your support!! I'm really glad this was helpful. I wish you the best of luck with your animation short. Let's keep working hard!!
You can copy a style, but the result is not the same for different artists. ordinary people often don’t notice this, but if the series was drawn by different artists, this is always noticeable. I also try to draw in different styles, but my style is still visible whether I want it or not🤗
The trace and place technique and the emotions first are two things I never knew about before watching your video. Good thing too since I'm trying to start in the animation sphere
Also, I'd like to add that not every production has a lot of production materials, and good indications on their character models.... I mostly work on japanese anime and there's usually not that much infos on the sheets :') The less infos you have, the harder it is to make something cool, so it's ok if your drawings are not perfect !! 5:05 I cannot agree more with this ;_; Often when I try to be super on model, I end up having stiff drawings... But at the same time, I can't just have rough drawings, or else it'll take too much time to clean !!! Because the japanise animation style allows it, I draw my key frames very roughly, then I'll clean those (like for a head turn 2 or 3 drawings are enough) and when I'm satisfied, I'll do my breakdowns more roughly, but since my key frames are superclean, I can be more efficient. It takes time, but eventually you'll be able to draw any characters from any model sheet, without practicing it first ! It's possible throught hard work !! Good luck everyone 😎💪
I've noticed this! Settei is very succint in their poses and expressions. You kinda need to be able to draw on the production's style very accurately to be a Sakkan. I was not expecting that Powerpuff Girls Z mention at the beginning of the video! I'm a massive PPGZ fan, so I was happy you mentioned it! I don't mean to be THAT guy, but I tend to get very annoyed when people get PPGZ's air date wrong (especially with Saberspark's review of the anime).
"Only the English dub aired in 2008." isn't that what he's saying? The drawing was made when Powerpuff Girls Z joined Cartoon Network, which is an english speaking television channel
Another great video with so many good tips and tricks! Drawing characters on model is one of the hardest things to get right, but I also like that you harp on how story and emotion should be most important. Always leave your videos feeling so inspired!! 😁

Thank you so much for making a video that I found more helpful and inspirational than 99% of the others I’ve been watching on UA-cam . Great stuff to help with my own projects and learning ❤
A job well done. Starting rough, not focusing on details and using different tricks to maintain the consistency and proportion are simple concepts that beginners struggle to understand. I myself still struggle and avoide transfer techniques, thinking of them as bad habits, but this video is a good reminder to not be too harsh on myself.
I am a guy who adores drawing and animating and I've been looking to draw in another person's art style for the sake of learning. I tell you, the place and trace thing is genius. I never thought of that before and I am studying like crazy to get better. While I do have my own art style. I constantly want to learn and I always wondered how people mimic another person's art style. Well now I know. :) Anyway. Thank you for the video @ManuMercurial as it's something I was always curious about and I am so glad I learned about the existence of place and trace. Gotta love gestures. Might have applied them in my own art style but it's cool how it can work when mimicking another art style. Can't wait to try it out. That's why I love art. There is always something you can learn.
This video is incredible, while being a artist every little good tip, even the most basic ones, helps not only at where you should practice but inspires you to work and put your skills to the next level. The way you perfectly speak and show with video editing examples of artwork about what are you saying is very didactic and refreshing. I instantly subscribed.
That’s the beauty of it I’m really putting my strength into 3D rn but nowdays if ur dedicated enough you really can draw in any style u want free form would be tough but with nice references n technology in animation it’s getting easier n easier
I think I was born to be an animator or inbetweener, I always love drawing other people’s style on model as best I could, I have no style of my own and I love animating. Love your videos, i always learn something.
This guide is so useful! I drew a little test animation after watching this, and I must say, using all the tips from this video, my animating skills improved a LOT
I would love a video on improving cutout animation rigs. I’m interested in learning cutout/rig because it’s doable and practically the intended way for some animated software. But I want to learn how to avoid that floaty feel when it’s done badly (besides practice. obviously).
I love your videos. They are so practical and have good advice. I have been so caught up in improving my anatomy lately that I think I've lacked in the "acting" part of drawing. Thank you for the reminder. 😊
So glad it was helpful Heather, thanks for taking the time to watch and to comment! And honestly, same. I still struggle with the fear of pushing the acting of my poses, need a daily reminder that that's how you get good character animation. I know we'll improve with practice!!
Yes please manu, please do a video on cut out animation or rig character tutorial, there's not a lot of those on youtube, i'll apreciate it And your video are always very helpful, i love them, but this thing of learning how to animate a character in model seems pretty hard but not impossible! I'll start training!
So i have been a art student for more than 10 years i can literally teach art in school to students till high school if i want but since i did engineering further in my studies i had to leave art all together now after making my name in the engineering field i came back to art although it took me some time it was like a muscle memory to me...then i wanted to try animation..its all on your art feel...if u can make a art pop out of paper sure u can pop a animation out a screen..it depends how much perspective u cam draw n how fast u can draw...learning animation has given me life back...after doing everything what society want me to do i was lost..now i have new things to learn everyday..
Maan it's great to see this type of behind the scenes explanation about the animation industry, topics like this are rarely made and it's really daunting for beginners who want to enter the animation industry. Story time: I remember years ago, I used to be a animation intern at a animation studio near our alumni university. A lot of us interns had to "wing" it, basically just do what we think was a 'okay' method or learn it on the fly cause we didn't know how to exactly adapt to the art style that is in done in production. And mind you we got paired with employees who doesn't like being pestered with questions so they will answer with "just draw" etc. or something along those lines, understandable cause everyone's in a lot of stress cause of the deadlines. Out of the 30 students that got in, only 3 to 5 students were able to get to be in the animation department, most of us were transfered to the CU (Clean Up), DIP (Digital Ink & Paint), Layout, and lastly BG (Background) department including me. I went thru all departments before finally settling in the BG dept. This was like back in 2013 or 2014 so there isn't much tutorials like this, thank you for providing insight and full information about the animation industry, we appreciate the time and effort you made to upload this.

About having the individual animators becoming invisible, and making the studio appear as a single artist, Yoh Yoshinari's fellow director at Trigger, Hiroyuki Imaishi has on multiple occations stated that he encourages each animator to express things in their own style, and to really show off what each of them can do, and there certainly isn't a shortage of examples of unique looks and movements in the shows and episodes Imaishi directs. If you look closely at Little Witch Accademia, and Brand New Animal, (which Yoshinari is credited with direction for) then you can see hints of the same thing going on, although not quite as much as under Imaishi.
9:18 "The faster you get those 10,000 ugly drawings inside of you, out there, the faster you'll get to the good ones. .. sometimes it may feel insurmountable, but in those times you need to trust in the process." I'm a super insecure artist and find myself CONSTANTLY trying to perfect even the simplest of sketches. I feel as though because of this, I have trouble improving since I'm spending too much energy on one thing and not the whole. To this day, I'm unsure why actually good advice is hard to get drilled into me, but this one actually got through to me. Thank you. ❤
as an amateur animator i never realized i subconsciously did this exact process to animate in different styles. Its crazy, i never realized i did these steps. as i have progressed, my appreciation for animation and the animators grew. This video will definitely help me progress in my animation journey. Thank you.
Absolutely amazing video. I remember my dad uses to dislike seeing me watching shows on CN like Coward the Cowardly Dog because he believes the drawings are hideous. But I know it was way better than what they put out on Disney Channel at the time, not with just the story, but also the animation. It was way more expressive and fun to watch
My teacher said that everything is made up of shapes. So that's another way of helping one draw. You gotta simplify the shapes. However i LOVE the thing you talked about on expression and then go on model. Perfect visuals to get the point across! I'm subscribing immediatly!

Might have applied them in my own art style but it's cool how it can work when mimicking another art style. Can't wait to try it out. That's why I love art. There is always something you can learn.
Doesn't make u a artist if u mimic other people art... No wonder instagram flooded with crap
Creating chracter is the most important

This video is incredible, while being a artist every little good tip, even the most basic ones, helps not only at where you should practice but inspires you to work and put your skills to the next level. The way you perfectly speak and show with video editing examples of artwork about what are you saying is very didactic and refreshing. I instantly subscribed.
I love you for making this video even though i didn’t watch it yet
THANK YOU for this!!! I've always tried to figure out how animators stayed on model somehow, and this explains it better than anyone else has!
Thanks for the information you provided. I wanted to improve my animations. It was very helpful.❤❤❤
That’s the beauty of it I’m really putting my strength into 3D rn but nowdays if ur dedicated enough you really can draw in any style u want free form would be tough but with nice references n technology in animation it’s getting easier n easier
Can finally learn from my favorite artist
Yepie
I think I was born to be an animator or inbetweener, I always love drawing other people’s style on model as best I could, I have no style of my own and I love animating. Love your videos, i always learn something.
The Topics in this Video where to me even as a 3D Animator.
Thank you
love your work Manu, you explain so well! It's so cool to see animators ability to draw in so many different styles
This guide is so useful! I drew a little test animation after watching this, and I must say, using all the tips from this video, my animating skills improved a LOT
Yoh Yoshinari is so incredible its nuts. Highly recommend getting his art book to study from is awesome
I found the idea of the video about Rig very interesting!! I hope you make a video! Looks promising!!
Very insightful video, I hope you do more!
More to come! Thanks for being here!
You actually answer questions i need answering, ur a genius ytuber
Yes please manu, please do a video on cut out animation or rig character tutorial, there's not a lot of those on youtube, i'll apreciate it
And your video are always very helpful, i love them, but this thing of learning how to animate a character in model seems pretty hard but not impossible! I'll start training!
Thank you, this is exactly what I've been looking for for over a year.
You're very welcome! Truly appreciate you watching and commenting!
So i have been a art student for more than 10 years i can literally teach art in school to students till high school if i want but since i did engineering further in my studies i had to leave art all together now after making my name in the engineering field i came back to art although it took me some time it was like a muscle memory to me...then i wanted to try animation..its all on your art feel...if u can make a art pop out of paper sure u can pop a animation out a screen..it depends how much perspective u cam draw n how fast u can draw...learning animation has given me life back...after doing everything what society want me to do i was lost..now i have new things to learn everyday..
so practice, simple shapes, thinking about the pose expression before anatomy, tracing when animating, this is really helpfull
great video! also tnx for the resources!

I cannot express how happy I was to see Courage there.
Even if it was just a picture, I MISS HIM 😭
I do it by burning the image on my eyes and then traycing it
this is the most helpful animation video i’ve literally ever watched
I would love to get this good. That way I can finally do the images in my head as close as possible to what my brain wants it to be.

Thank you for sharing the databases! Would definitely be interested in a video about cut-out animation.
This was really interesting to watch, thanks!
Listen, we do not keep secrets, that was uncalled for! This is coming from someone who both works in animation and teaches future animators/ but the video was very helpful, thank you!
this was such a great video!
Thank you so much for this information!
your videos are the perfect blend of education and entertainment!
The best video about animation i ve ever seen
Thank you so much for sharing this information. And please make a detailed video about cutout animation.
Really really cool video. I'm an illustrator, but I've been wanting to get into animation more seriously, and this is good motivation!

Man i am finally understanding animation thanks to you, you are an amazing teacher
I love your videos so much, thank you!!
thank you so much!) This video is very relevant to me right now)
Absolutely amazing video. I loved it!
If you look closely at Little Witch Accademia, and Brand New Animal, (which Yoshinari is credited with direction for) then you can see hints of the same thing going on, although not quite as much as under Imaishi.
actually so much information I had doubt in earlier, this might let me try animating myself.

"The faster you get those 10,000 ugly drawings inside of you, out there, the faster you'll get to the good ones. .. sometimes it may feel insurmountable, but in those times you need to trust in the process."
I'm a super insecure artist and find myself CONSTANTLY trying to perfect even the simplest of sketches. I feel as though because of this, I have trouble improving since I'm spending too much energy on one thing and not the whole. To this day, I'm unsure why actually good advice is hard to get drilled into me, but this one actually got through to me.
Thank you. ❤
To draw anime like a pro, just bribe a magical cat with tuna to teach you, and always remember: big eyes, spiky hair, and a serious backstory are key!
as an amateur animator i never realized i subconsciously did this exact process to animate in different styles. Its crazy, i never realized i did these steps. as i have progressed, my appreciation for animation and the animators grew. This video will definitely help me progress in my animation journey. Thank you.
This why I love animation, but looking at my videos (if they even count as animation) I still have a lot to learn.
good stuff, very insightful :D
Absolutely amazing video. I remember my dad uses to dislike seeing me watching shows on CN like Coward the Cowardly Dog because he believes the drawings are hideous. But I know it was way better than what they put out on Disney Channel at the time, not with just the story, but also the animation. It was way more expressive and fun to watch
WOWWWWW I DIDN'T KNOW MOST OF THAT STUFF WHATT?? Animators work HARDD
Really good video, keep going!!!♥
(in my opinion) The best video you've made so far :) really useful!
As always, thank you for sharing
My teacher said that everything is made up of shapes. So that's another way of helping one draw. You gotta simplify the shapes. However i LOVE the thing you talked about on expression and then go on model. Perfect visuals to get the point across!
I'm subscribing immediatly!
You and ZebirdBrain have done a fantastic job in giving info on what goes into your Animation (especially in Lackdaisy), you’ve got some Mad Chops for it. 👏
Nah don't congratulate ZeBirdBrain, they are a bad person.
@@rise.-mikeyThey’ve already buried that Hatchet with the Tweets/likes they had made, and has been back on a few of the streams with the LackDaisy team, is working on Monkey Wrench show, and has passed any hateful resentment with them, otherwise they’d be officially booted and not hired for any new recent projects.
@@RetroFan2.0
Just not a fan, how Ze pretty much started drama and then people figure her dislike to mtf trans specifically and the response was to block people calling them out and delete tweets. People wanted an apology but it never happened and then they were promoted on top of that.
Since there is no apology, all people can do is just wait and see if Ze changed at all or not. Just think it's a little unfair because to this day people are dogpilling Vivzie and they let something like Ze just do whatever.
@@rise.-mikey it’s because the way both where handled in who’s more in the wrong based off their own personal view when they did, since Vivzie put out that her Donation was cancelled seemed seemed to rub people wrong, claiming LD didn’t want it out of spite and she’s being negligent about it in telling her viewers publicly about it, and ZeBird had also seemed to be doing something similar in saying that a link in supporting their show wasn’t added in response to LD’s Tweet, which felt very forward since it was supposed to be a team link tag, trying to make it out to be their not bothering to make one, and being lazy, which the some of the coworkers calling it out.
@@RetroFan2.0
Because they cancelled it right after they had the full donation. They didn't accepted it and it wasn't just Vivzie's ideas, the whole team felt like giving money to the project and Vivzie did try contact them in private and there was no answer. First after it was made public, they finally reacted to that. Then fans dug deep into this and made a screentshot from Discord of a whiny Ze that was against taking the donation because in her own words 'this is why she 'donated' 5K and forcefully have her claws on the credits'.
It's insane, not to mention. This Ze person was talking shi* about Vivzie a lot of times. She even was ok with Vivzie's show being leaked. She even called Vivzie 'Clout chasing bish'. There was no apology ever done. And let's not ignore this blatant transphobia to mtf.
