- Join me on a quest to make the ultimate hobbitcore fashion piece - Bilbo Baggins’ patchwork housecoat from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Party! This was a feat that spanned over a year of work, thousands of pieces of fabric, and many adventures along the way.
Fabrics used include a few thrifted pieces, some of my past & future projects, and costume scraps from Murdoch Mysteries, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked: The Musical (Broadway production).

For aspiring patchwork housecoat quilters, the pattern I used is McCalls' M7875, which seems to be the go-to among my fellow hobbity-housecoat creators :)
"my fellow floor trolls." Look, i came here to watch someone make something cool, not be called out 😂
Hey Rachel Maksy called me out first lol 😂
I totally was watching this while being a bed troll, crocheting a cardigan for my mom 😂
"Up the mountain without a burglar" 😂
For everyone compelled to attempt a patchwork project: I highly recommend a rotary cutter for repetitive cuts, it reduces the strain on the wrists so much! Not to mention the callouses on the fingers from all the cutting. After Shannon Makes video I took up patchwork and after exactly 1 day of cutting very quickly went to my local craft shop and got a mat and a cutter. It was soooo worth every cent!
Another trick I picked up from some quilting UA-camrs is a strip method. Instead of cutting little squares 3.5x3.5 you can cut 3.5 cm wide strips and sew them together and then cut into clusters of 2 squares attached. Then sew these clusters onto another 3.5 wide strip and cut squares which gives you two 3.5 and one 3.5x7 cm clusters. Rince and repeat. (Sorry, I understand this is not relevant to the current project, but I am hoping someone in the comment section might pick these up and it would work for them :) I want the world to have more patchwork projects!!! Also, I comment as I watch so some of this might have been addressed in the video later)
Rotary cutters are definitely a game changer!
good to know. I have a rotary cutter still in package and a mat.. will put them into use
I inherited someone’s entire stash (passed away) and I keep thinking a hobbit house coat would be the PERFECT way to use some of it. Thanks for posting this so this project is back on my radar. Yours turned out so gorgeous!
That's it. I have to make a patchwork coat. Of course, me being me, i have to make it so that i can wear it when im out and about. 🤣
Patchwork clothing gets better with age because as it wears out it gets repaired with even more patches!
Absolutely perfect! Billbo and Frodo would be proud😊
I love everything about this video, the robe is beautiful! I have to say that it was an extra delight to see Shannon and her partner doing their circus thing in the background! We crafters must stick together!
Love your housecoat and your demos. Patchwork is great fun and can be as simple or complicated as you choose. I make myself patchwork skirts cushions and bed covers at the moment. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas. ❤
Wonderful
Another youtuber to make a Hobbit inspired robe! Yeah! I especially like that you do it you own way, and I absolutely love the result. Sincerely, the designe creator of the original robe need a raise...
Cool 😀
I am in awe of you! The time, patience, dedication, hours, wow! I just LOVE the finished cozy, hobbit-ness of the final housecoat 🎉🎉
Thank you so much, it was so much fun (and so much work lol) :D
❤❤❤❤❤
Every time I see someone make their own Bilbo house coat I just get that warm cosy sort of quiet glee
You made such a stunning piece! It looks amazing ❤
One day, one day I will tackle one myself

Absolutely fabulous housecoat! Wonderful video too! ❤
Absolutely beautiful! What a fabulous garment!
I've been collecting fabric for years now, so hopefully 2025 is the year I sew one, too!
Thank you so much! 😊 it’s definitely quite a journey collecting fabrics for it!
I'm a new quilter of only a few months. Not been able to do any for over a week now due to a nasty infection in both eyes, so watching lot's of tutorials instead. Came across you and watched this video. I would not make it myself, but found the whole video, intriguing, interesting and quite relaxing, and of course I have to subscribe to see you other work. Well done. Its gorgeous.. and WOW! Tiny scraps from a stage show 💞
NGL, the I'm Very Busy sign is a perfect clapper XD
Der absolute Wahnsinn!!!
!!! Gratulation !!!
Watching this as I make a patchwork dress with 194 pieces, which feels overwhelming, and thinking to myself...hmm 1800 isn't that much more, right?! 😅 This is a delightful make and it turned out amazing!
this is on my to do list.
Uuuugh those patchwork housecoats and crazy quilts are so freaking cool, but my ADHD could never 😭
Fellow ADHD crafter here! I find what works for me is a designated craft time every week. My mother in law and I FaceTime every Sunday morning at 9am-11am so I’m getting a little done each week. Good luck!
Oh, I love that acorn and oak leaf print you used for the lining!
I was so excited when I found that! 😁
Yesssssss...... Precious reptitive tasks.... 😈✨
Beautiful..❤❤❤❤love it. going to make something like that for my bed , start collecting about year ago...
That is epic. Absolutely marvelous!
Wow! I love this coat! Marvelous! 🎉🎉🎉

I don't know how I've found myself here but wow I stayed for every min! Wonderful video, def new fan, love from UK
I just love this housecoat.
A work of art. J.R.R. Tolkien is well pleased I am sure.
Wow! Good Lord woman! You are not daunted by doing a huge project! That took so much time and dedication, and talent. It turned out beautifully! Perhaps one day I will have the skills needed to create something just like your Bilbo Baggins house coat. 😊
Happy Helper is testing it to give it the seal of approval. Your housecoat is beautiful, and the voluminous skirt will keep you very warm.
.
I've been obsessed with this pattern since it started making the rounds, and absolutely plan to use it for end of the year scrap quilt
BRAVO ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nope, not a surprise that you are now well over 5000 subscribers because you are a delight. 😊
Your Hobbit housecoat is stunning. 🤩 Thank you for sharing and Happy New Year to you too. 🎉😊❤XXX
Great job Lydia!!
this is AWESOME!! looking forward to making a copycat in the future 💕 vibes are 👌
It’s clearly a labour of love and it’s wonderful well done ❤
Today, I was literally thinking about what to do with all the cabbage taking over my sewing room. I was thinking about a floor poof but I am pretty sure the dog would destroy it. Maybe I will start cutting squares and assembling and see where I get as the year progresses.
I don't have as many sumptuous scraps as you but there are always future projects.
I love your needle minder 😲😲😲
Bravo!!! Goals!!! Skills!!!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!
I HAVE TO SAY I THOUGHT I WOULD NOT LIKE IT BUT I SAW IT ON YOU IT LOOKED GOOD 👏👍🌹
Such a beautiful house coat.
You literally posted this just after I hit subscribe XD now to actually watch the video
That's awesome! Welcome to the channel!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, Halfling!!
Your coat is beautiful! I’ve been wrestling with a pattern and you’ve given me inspiration to keep going!
What a spectacular result! Awesome doesn't get close.
I love this and that the pieces were full of memories made it even more special. And thank you for spending more than 30 seconds at the end to show the finished piece. Kind of a pet peeve of mine that crafters only show short snippets of their finished materpieces after 30 to 60 minutes of watching the construction. Wish you all the very best for 2025.
That’s a bit of a peeve of mine too! I’ve seen so many videos where the end result is almost glossed over, and as a viewer I completely understand how frustrating that can feel.
First, you reminded me that I had a cloak screaming to be made. Now, the robe. My perfectly fine velvet robe is now way too big, and either needs remade smaller or replaced. Though patchwork isn't my thing (burned out at a young age by a quilting family), your robe is so cozy looking, and cozy is my thing. Amazing work at usual, and thx for the wonderful hand st8tching scenes. Your hand sewing is gorgeous and inspiring.
11:15 i laughed at this moment. So many little pieces of course you were very busy. 😂
This came up in my recommendations, and I had to watch. I loved Shannon Makes' hobbit housecoat so much, it has inspired me to make a comforter in the same style
Грандиозная работа,очень красиво!❤
Excellent I would love to try it on ha ha ❤😊
I'm in love! I need that pattern and then I need to withdraw while I make such a fine housecoat. I appreciate your videos and am now subscribed.
I wish I could thumbs up this video more than once, because it's everything. The coat is stunning, and I am in awe of the time and effort you put in.
Aw, thank you so much! 😊
Beautiful !❤
This is seriously brilliant! Perfect watch for a rainy New Year’s Day afternoon
I do love that you sit to cut out your pattern pieces. I have severe back issues so if I stand.longer than 3 minutes I'm I serious pain. I'm happy I found your fun channel. Now I can̈ set up my board and sit to do this. I have now learned how to get things cut out for my doll clothes. Your work is magical to me.
It was worth it and looks great on you!
What a brilliant, beautiful project!
You are an amazing seamstress! Lovely color combinations and fabric texture, a work of art in fabric.. Love to see more like this.
What a gorgeous result of your Herculean efforts!!! 🙌🏻❤️❤️😍
Enjoy? Did I enjoy? ……..I’ve pressed ‘Like’ and just like that, ‘Subscribed’. I loved this video, loved your Hobbit Coat and when I saw your little dog I was drawn, very close to tears because I had a little black poodle just the same. I had 2 boys , 1 white and 1 black. They are VERY smart little dogs and I used to take them to a local Nursing Home to entertain the residents. I worked there occasionally and I knew that my boys would be loved. I taught a few basic ‘tricks’ and with lots of cuddling and trotting up and down the halls ….. a good afternoon was had by all. I’m about embark on a bit of binge watching, I hope you get plenty more subscribers.
The housecoat looks beautiful and awesome. I wish I had your sewing skills.
What a wonderful garment! I love all the variations on the Bilbo’s housecoat 😻 I think it would take me years to make one as there are limits to how long I can sit up for!
This is so incredible! So much work and it turned out absolutely amazing. I would love to try patchwork garments to use up scraps
😍😍❤❤😍😍
Your finished product is STUNNING! As a LOTR fan, I admit I'd love one of these housecoats, too. Well-done on scoring those Murdoch Mystery fabric remnants - this was a brilliant use for them. You have a gifted eye for color/texture combinations. Delighted to have found you. Wishing you many hours of Happy Creating!
WOW ! Absolutely incredible 🙌🏼
exquisite!! i love that you used shannon's contributions. these hobbit housecoats are absolutely epic, and i love knowing that you have one!
I am impressed by your hobbit garment, the time it took, and the way you filmed it. Lovely to see it growing bit by bit and not speeding up. I enjoyed your vlog very much !
