My advice to anyone using any medium is when watching people paint, take ideas from them and try them but don't take what anyone says as gospel as everyone is different and you could be missing out on a different method that works for you. Sometimes its hard not to be influenced by your favourite artist and what grey do but that's them, you always need to find your own lane

    • @SarahBurnsStudio

Yes absolutely! Great advice. It's really hard when you're following hundreds of artists and they are all doing something different - it's like you want to try all those styles too. But in the end, keep doing what makes YOU happy. You'll find your tribe!

This!! But also, not treating every artist demonstration of their work as a tutorial. It is such a pet peeve of mine, especially as someone who spends a lot of time on pinterest where every art piece is seen as an invitation to be reproduced through direct copying and then celebrated by others.
I really wish people would be more considerate of the time artists spend creating their compositions, developing their ideas, connecting with the meaning of these concepts and not blatantly rip off original artworks.
Copying is perfectly fine under some circumstances (cite! always!) and a good way to learn, but you must give credit to the artist. Even if it's in your sketchbook, for your eyes only. But that does not provide you the same skill as direct observation of the world around you, or learning to work from multiple references (copyright free photos as opposed to finished original artworks, your own photos, etc.)
When people do this, they are not exercising artistic skills beyond the technical. They bypass so much of this process, from curating the visual information you see before you/making choices as an artist, composing your scene, developing style, all the trial and error or following through with a concept you are passionate about. Worst of all, they are missing out on expressing themselves creating something that has never existed before.
Copying another person's artwork can make an excellent "study," but it will never be an original art piece. It makes me nervous to post my work online, and nervous for those, like you, who are brave (and generous) enough to share their work and process with us.
I've seen people straight up badgering artists for a list of all the products they used including their reference photo so they can make their own exactly the same, even when the artist specifically mentioned painting it en plein air.
      Sorry, rant over. 😅

Actually, I recently purchased the same palette and the W&N 10-color intro set plus quin magenta, cobalt turquoise light, and a bigger tube of permanent white. I haven't set it up yet, but would have only used it for plein air and used tubes in the studio. But after listening to your learnings and revelations, I'm going to create my own gouache mothership!!!! Right now I'm using a large jelly gouache set to see if I enjoyed the medium and I've fallen in love with gouache!

Great video. I've started teaching myself gouache, coming from pretty much zero skills in art (it's "painful" as I'm a heavy keyboard user for decades so I've been getting minor cramps in my hands while going through painting lessons). I've been watching a ton of videos and I've started taking note of how different artists actually handle the brushes, when and how much they dip into water, and many other unspoken movements and techniques they use. The unspoken part is HUGE. It's the little skills they've learned over time that never get mentioned because it's become a part of them so they don't even think about it. One thing that does bother me sometimes is how many artists don't have the water or towels within frame in their videos, so I'm never quite sure what they are doing when their hands move out of frame. I do know that I've been using too much water, so I'm going to try what you're doing here.

This is cool to discover because i started with oils, loved the buttery blending but hated the dry time. Started watercolor and love the process. Frustrated with getting bright brights though. Now I'm looking at gouache and I'm thinking, could this be it? The perfect medium for blending and drying quickly?

You know, I've been thinking about this ever since you mentioned Lena Revo's video in your last twitch stream. I was conflicted when she mentioned theres only one way to use gouache. In fact there are many artists who use it in a watercolor fashion, such as Justin Donaldson, Jeremy Ford and Maddy Bellwoar and when I delved deeper, more people thought gouache was closer in relations to watercolor than acrylic or oil. But the more I thought about it, I'd like to learn all the ways to paint with gouache, both with water and thickly, like you mentioned. It is its own unique medium that I think you can use it however. I just placed an order for that container you use. I'll just have to play around with it more, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Wonderful video, as always.

Everyone has an opinion (usually pretty strong) about how to use certain materials. Some people are experts and their opinion is an educated one. But it’s never the only way! In fact, I use water mixable oils for all my oil paintings and there are some people who think water mixable oils are an abomination lol. I do agree that acrylic shouldn’t be watered down too much with water as it tends to become gloopy and harder to work with, but for a tiny amount it is fine, I never had any major problems. But with gouache, it’s very much about personal preference. The binder is gum arabic (or sometimes dextrin), the same as watercolor, but some manufacturers add an inert material (the chalky substance) to make it opaque. Higher quality gouache doesn’t add much (if any) filler, they use more pigment. In all gouache, except maybe the cheapest stuff, there’s MORE pigment and less binder. This is what gives gouache its incredible vibrancy. Thinning it with water doesn’t degrade it but it makes it more difficult to create even colors - it might get streaky or spotty. The original “gouache” was called Opaque Watercolor before it evolved to its current form. So don’t hesitate to add water if you want!

hi Sarah! The advices you give in this video are the very first ones we receive from Lena Rivo in her class before we start painting. However, as I travel a lot and sometimes by plane it is almost impossible to transport such a paint filled box that has to be carried the right way at all times without making a mess, even with the silicone lid. How do you manage taking it outside with you in a backpack? Buying a wide flat plastic container, line it with a damp sponge and then a sheet of baking paper allows the paint to stay moist (also useful for acrylics) I often use this solution when away from home.
    Thanks for sharing!

I use a combination of thin and thick layers, depending on how I want to work. But my gouache is in a plastic palette, so I always have to re-wet it. If I tried only using it out of the tube, I'd waste too much, as I sometimes do with oil. I don't have any trouble re-wetting it, since the M. Graham has honey in it, and I've gotten used to mixing as little or as much water as I want. What I do need to work on now is altering the values with white. Think I need to practice swatches with various mixes with white, so I get better at it. I've developed the patience to wait until the paint is thoroughly dry to add subsequent and thicker layers and, since I nearly always paint indoors, this is not a biggie. Houston tends to be too hot and humid 6-7 months of the year to try plein air painting. You'd just drip sweat into your painting. When I have gone out, I've taken watercolor (non-honey kinds) because it's the easiest to deal with for transporting. I love gouache, though, and if someone put a knife to my throat and said, "You can only paint with one medium; which will it be?" I'd pick gouache. I love the sensual goopiness of oil, but the clean-up and waiting for it to dry make it kind of a drag, and it's taken me years to get to the point where I can finally do watercolors that are not too wimpy/pale. Gouache has the Goldilocks Juuust Right for me : )

Hi Sarah. Thank you for all the tips! Your painting looks stunning and I'm excited to try out. Years ago I bought a 'paint by numbers' kit for my mother and the paint that came with it was in small tubs, gel-like form. I used it to paint many art pieces and loved the feel and ease of opening up and being able to start painting. I never checked what paint it was, acrylic or gouache. This was years ago. I recently bought 'Holbein Artists Gouache 5ml' and would love to transfer them into gouache pallette but like you said in the video i'm afraid I will waste them as they dry out incredibly fast. I don't understand how they don't dry out in tubs but they do when you're using it out of the tube! Thanks in advance!

This is not ideal w acrylic but I love it.

If you have issues with mold, disinfect before closing. Mold only occurs when a mold spore is present; kill the spores and you wont have an issue. Some isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle is quick and easy to do.

I've just decided to try gouache again after a couple of years putting it aside and returning to watercolor. One of the key issues was what you expressed at the end of the video, having to think ahead to squeeze out paint, never having enough and all the accompanying negative issues. I had purchased this container and didn't trust filling the wells even partially because of how quickly it dries. I had a few dollops of gouache in it when I pulled it out again and, being cheap gouache, it was hard. I'm planning to try this again as well as mixing the colors with the palette knife b/c I'm wasting so much paint doing so with a brush. I want to be able to travel with gouache and paint plein air but before this video it just didn't seem as quick and simple as watercolor. Thanks for posting this.

Ive just started with Gouache and am loving it and hating it. It's definitely a medium I'm willing to give more time to. I have really enjoyed the videos you've made talking your way through the process. I started out adding gouache to watercolor paintings, a little at a time because I don't want to waste the paint. As you say it is more expensive. I've found I can work through some watercolor painting in my journal and if I make a mistake or don't like something, I've been able to cover the mistake with gouache, that's been a plus for me. Within the last week I took the plunge and painted to paintings entirely in gouache. Loving it at this point

I have my gouache in small glass containers (Talens) 16 ml, so I don't have to use the transfer to a box, but your video has still given me a lot of tips about how to take the gouache out of the glass pots ( never again will I use a brush for that! Why didn't I think of using a palette knife for this? 😄) Also the regular stirring and the drops of oil to keep the paint from drying or molding!
I am a watercolorist, so I tend to use too much water in gouache. Also we were taught how to use that at schools and art clubs when I was younger That was probably to make the paint go further, it was more economic, I think! ☺️

I first bought a complete set of m Graham gouache and squirted them out like watercolor, put them in my pallet, closed the lid only to came back two days later, all were molded every single one completely molded. I thought to myself how am I going to make this work? . I found that Ox Gall liquid from Windsor Newton by the drop into a small amount of water, after you cleanse your brush, before you add the gouache paint will allow it to smoothly transfer from the brush to the ground that you're using. Also I have been adding by dropper full or however much I think I need to each color product buy Winsor Newton called Blending Medium. All mold has stopped and the lusciousness of the gouache stays, up to 10 days later, as long as that blending medium is the last thing I Spritz into the box palate before closing. No mold, no drying, they're always fully moist, ready to paint. I've been plenairging a bit and it cuts the spritzing in half. I've used it consistently now and it's a game changer. Here's to seeing more videos and adding your name to my patreon friends.

Hi Sarah, new to the channel but love the videos. Two questions on topics I couldn’t find looking through your library … are there any technical problems mixing gouache and watercolour? Really I want to add more mixed media elements like inks, charcoal and soluble graphite too but mixed media artists seem to have a head first attitude, not worrying about if that might affect the permanence of the work down the track … and do you use workable fixative and/or artists varnishes?

I put some clove oil in the m Graham paints to try to help with the m Graham molding but unfortunately it molded anyway. After adding just one drop of clove oil m Graham gouache started to "fish eye" because of the clove oil. M Graham is less than lavish for this palette. Very nicely done. You've motivated me to try this workflow out. One question I have: is it possible to get soft edges in gouache? For example, clouds have both hard edges and soft edges. The best I've been able to get so far are what I would call "moderately soft" edges; that is, containing some of the underlying colot painted a little more thinly, but this really isn't the same as soft edges. Thanks, Doug

    • @SarahBurnsStudio

You could do your initial layer wet-into-wet and get a VERY soft edge then let that dry before moving on. But of course this requires ample planning much like water color!

Hello! No problems at all. Still moist, still using it every week. I've heard some people say their M Graham gouache gets moldy if left alone too long because they use honey in their binder. Maybe start with only 1/2 the tube in the palette box and see how it goes for a few weeks, making sure to use it or at least stir it every week.

    • @longyarn4288
      @longyarn4288 4 роки тому +3

@@henriquejanuario881 - Very Important Tip: Gouache actually is watercolor (unless it's acrylic) and so must be treated as such. If you're going to frame it; use a mat to keep glass from touching it. Glass changes temperature thus attracting moisture from the air, as does the gouache and paper, which will cause the painting to stick to the glass, which ruins it and can encourage mold. If you don't want to mat the painting there are spacers that some framers use to separate glass from artwork.

Great video Sarah! I come from years of watercolor experience so I also feel comfortable using thin layers, but I want to get bolder and need more practice at that. I have taken old contact lens containers and stuck them (with blue tack) onto a small lightweight thin board, then fill each with a blob of paint. I dabbed some of the color on the lid and this can go in my backpack in a kit. I would prefer the palette you have, I looked around but wasn't sure what to buy. Wondering if something like thyme oil might be subbed for the clove oil? Or is “clove bud oil” not highly fragrant?
Historically, clove oil (no mention of “bud”) has been used for toothache, and had been prominently found in my early (unpleasant) dentist visits.
