Hope the techniques I shared here are helpful!! Just remember to keep practicing and experimenting and you'll slowly but surely improve over time. Feel free to let me know what else you might be struggling with when it comes to blending in gouache and I'll try cover it in another video :)
I feel attacked when you said it's better to practice everyday than just watch videos 🥺😆😭 I love your video! It explains a lot and not perfect or too scripted, whichi is what we need. It's okay to make mistakes and we can always do something with it which makes this video actually perfect haha
I go through phases, like everything in my creative endeavours... and life. Sometimes I will be collating as much info and inspiration as possible, other times I will be absorbed in my work and have no time for anything else! And there's even the in-between space where I'm honing my craft (learning skills) and watching videos (tutorials) at the same time 🤷🏻♀️
okay but weirdly for me, i guess it’s my learning style since everyone’s is different, i didn’t draw for like almost a year but would still watch art videos all the time. now i’m better than i used to be and i didn’t even practice what i watched??? it’s all about really paying attention to their movements and stuff when it comes to certain mediums to where it ALMOST becomes muscle memory for YOU. of course it still requires practice and you’ll never go pro without lots of it, but watching videos really does help a lot of people!
@@eliotb.1219 this makes sense, it's why I try not to watch videos that have been sped up. Those make me worse, I get frustrated with myself. Lol brains.
the tip is, find youtubers like this who can really articulate and demonstrate it in a proper way, watch them a lot, and it sort of becomes ingrained in your memory. especially if you have certain learning styles like visual/audio learning as your mains like i do edit: drawingwiffwaffles is another great one! her explanations can be all over the place but somehow still make lots of sense lol. i guess it depends on how chaotic your own brain runs haha
Thank you for the tips! I just ordered my first set of gouache and I'm so excited for them to arrive in the mail. Acrylics are a struggle so I hope gouache will be nice since I lean most for my watercolours
@@JessChungArt there is a typo:) - I meant tubes! Autocorrect sometimes is driving me nuts.... It’s much more difficult to rewet the pans and get solid and smooth colour on paper...
Such a beautiful, instructive video. Your voice is so soothing. The blending techniques are explained so well, especially the advantage for painting more opaquely. Having your palette in the frame helps me see the consistency of your paint which helps a lot. And that final painting is just gorgeous. Great job!
I came across your channel just a few weeks ago and so far you're the only channel I am getting some real lessons, and I loveeee your voice 🤍 THANK YOUUUU
aaa thank you so much for this!! i recently bought himi gouache, and i've been trying to paint here and there. they look.. okay, but they definitely could be better LOL i'm hoping to practice again soon with this video to help ❤️❤️❤️
Hii! I love your videos! They give me lots of inspiration and calm. The only thing I need help is with water, these days I’ve been struggling to draw and loosing motivation. I was hoping you can show us a water tutorial? Thank you if you could but if not it’s still ok! ❤️
I love Gouache because it has the best of both worlds imo. The only think I don’t enjoy so much is the mate finish of the painting. Is there any medium or finishing product that can be used to make the gouache look less mate, like more glossy finish? Thanks!
Thanks for the tips, Jess! I tried these out and learned a lot about how mixing should feel, if that makes sense. I think I’m getting a handle on what different consistencies feel like and how they act. How would you go about blending in a smaller area, where there isn’t much room to make large transitions? For example, going from light to shadow without losing the general shadow shape?
You're welcome! 😄 I would maybe place down the light and the shadow, then go in with a clean brush and softly blend out the line so the shadow isn't a harsh line. Hope that makes sense!
Hi Jess, thank you for the video, this is really helpful. I'm trying to follow your instructions for the first kind of gradient (pink on top and white at the bottom) but when I start to go up with the light pink, in the beginning it blends in well with the darker pinks but when I arrive at the top (right under the darkest pink) I am ending up with a very marked, very light pink, which doesn't blend in nicely with the darkest pink on the top. I have tried many times and have been having the same issue over and over... What do you think might I be doing wrong? Thank you very much!
i was wondering can i take a small tube of gouache and mix it with in a 2 oz jar of water so i can use it for either painting or for airbrushing mainly create it in bulk?
Hey Jess! This is such a good video! Very informative and so many useful thoughts and comments! I do have one question though. How do you recommend blending very small spaces? For example if I want to paint out a figure drawing with gouache, between some muscles blending has to be done, but the space for this is so small. The transition from light to dark happen fast but smooth. Any tips for that?
You can try softening out the blend with a clean damp brush! That way you're just reactivating the colours on the paper and lightly blending them together
This was helpful but I have heard that when you are working in layers you should keep the bottom layer thin and get thicker as you layer on top. How should one paint a gradient sky in the background and a forest or other greenery in the foreground with gouache? Wont the background reactivate if it's thick? Could you show your process of making a similar scenery where layering is required please?
Far too finicky for me. I hate having to jump through hoops to get a smooth blend, but I do love gouache for thumbnails and blueprint work. Just not finished pieces.
James gurney had a good tip for gouache gradients! Basically just get one of those small mini paint rolls and fill the paints on a separate tray in a gradient line and then just roll your paint roller on that, transfer to paper and voila :)! Its usually perfect for gradient underpaintings/primes so you can work on top of that

Is it better to mix the paint and shades you want as you’re painting or premix the paint before you start to know the exact shades you want?

yay, new video

Yeah, even with rewettable gouache transitions require a lot of practice, but with acrylic or PVA gouache it's even more challenging.

What type of tape are your using.
Which masking tape???
