This video was shared to me by over 100 people!!! Everyone was curious to see if it actually worked and of course, so was I.
I tried it out with a few different fabrics and was not digging it UNTIL I used this super stretchy, slinky, spandexy fabric. I dont know the exact name, as I bought it downtown and there's no labels but it is:
-light weight
-super stretchy
-cuts clean
-opaque
After I made this one, I tried to make it with a thicker fabric but it didn't drape nearly as well. So light weight, stretchy is the way to go!
MEASUREMENTS
-2 Yards of fabric
-Neckhole 12"
-Shoulder 2"
-Side cuts 24" (12" on either side of neck hole)

Well said. I also love that she says ahead of time then shows us and shows styling. I'm plus size and I could still pull this off. Especially when I suddenly had a party to attend last year while on a vacay and all I'd taken was shorts and super casual summer dresses. It was 115⁰ while I was there. Definitely keeping this in my bag of tricks. And like you said... EIGHT minutes, not 15-18. I sew, but don't always want to have to.
@@terrifleischman6337I dare you to do it from one of those felt backed disposable plastic table cloths. Someone with your skills could do a video on nothing to wear to a pic nic but what's in the basket and do that dress with tape and no sewing. It would be a hoot.
So, what makes this cool is that this is basically a simplification of the Greek chiton dress. Two thousand years ago, they used to take a square/rectangular piece of fabric and fold/pin it strategically with a similar shape/outcome. Cool to see how it came out here!

I recall seeing things about that way back and was my immediate thought. With how much effort went into making fabric, it makes sense to waste as little as possible and not to over engineer your design, as small mistakes can completely ruin your work.

The whole time after seeing the computer example, I was thinking I'd seen something similar on Pinterest.
For fabric choice: A rayon/tencel/viscose knit blended with 5-10% spandex will be perfect for this. The rayon/tencel/viscose gives a fluid drape and the spandex gives it stretch and shape retention. A knit fabric without spandex will work, but it won't spring back into shape. A woven fabric may work if it has a good drape, but will require finishing the raw edges.
And if you're busty, well, a bandeau bra is probably not going to work for you. By all means, give it a shot, but have a backup plan just in case. I'm a G-cup and would go for a bra in a matching colour so that it would almost disappear when worn with the dress.

I think a regular thin strap pinned to the 2 inch halter should be fine. Maybe cover the side with a bandeau type bra, or elastic skirt turned into bandeau top, then folded in half? So it doesn't look like lingerie peaking out, unless that's the style you're going for. :D
You could do a bandeau over a strapless bra as well. If you don't have a bra in the color you need
A bra with a complementary colored cami or slip underneath may also work.

I’m not exactly a beginner at sewing but I haven’t work with knits yet so I’m less familiar with what to look for.
I also don’t want to ask for “boingy” fabric or spend an hour shaking fabric until I find one that bounces lol 😅
Ooh, or a bra with a body suit over top! Or even a bra and some lacy/fancy lingerie to give it some intrigue, depending on your vibe or intended wear.

I will tell you I made 3 before this that did not work well but this fabric and the angled cuts made all the difference to me.

Yes 🙌 I tried it on the paper towels first then on scrap fabric the finale some Christian Dior printed fabric ❤ easy go to it would help dressing with me recovering from foot surgery thanks 💕
I know that it’s no sew dress but if you like it much, you can grab needle and strong thread to adjust your dress by your body until you are happy that it fit. You can put it as emergency in case your dress ruins by accident. Better than never. 😊
Ok, so i just made this! I used a boingy black knit. I'm a large lady, so i not only made it bigger (obviously) but i aded a few inches to make sure things weren't to gappy. And OMG!! It's so, so beautiful! I did stitch up the sides because i don't want any of my body to be exposed, so the vertical cuts were refuced down to just arm holes.
It hangs so beautifully, it creates volumes in such flattering places, the cowl neck was a fantastic idea too, it looks so elegant. I made a bolero with extremely long front panels, which can be left hanging or thrown over each shoulder for a wrap look.
It took me about an hour to get my measurements, make the cuts and stitch the sides. Best project I've ever done. Literally no waste. THANK YOU!!!!
Im a uk 24 i did a 30" gap between the verticles, a 19" neck hole for a generous cowl and 16" from shoulder to waist, making each vertical cut 36"

Interesting idea. Thank you for presenting. I've been sewing for a long time and have a couple of thoughts. Viewers might want to make the cuts considerably shorter to begin with. You can always cut more, but you cannot "uncut." If there is not much fabric left intact at the shoulder, you could reinforce it by sewing something strong underneath like fabric tape (or on top if you are feeling "designerish"). That will prevent inadvertent tearing and/or distortion and could even contribute to the design depending upon your preferences. Better tee shirts have tape sewn into the shoulder seams for stability for instance. Belts are a great way to rein in too much fabric. Belt choices can make or break an outfit.

The two way stretch and high spandex content gives it that boing 😊
Cutting on the bias (angled as in the video) will also give some stretch

Also, you can add a strip of something not as stretchy under the back of the 'neckline' to help keep it stable under the general wear could be useful- it allows the front to still drape/stretch but keeps the back stable so there's something to support- if you cowl the neckline, over time the back will stretch out unattractively with the weight of the front dragging on it, so a bit of support will help stop that. (especially if like her you put it on the bias- that can cause warping just from hanging up/being worn over time, esp. with cheaper/less stretchy fabrics)

This really reminds me of the 1920s "1 hour dress" - this feels like the 2020s version of it. Lovely job!
I feel like it could also make a pretty good (and super quick!) 1920s costume in a pinch, just throw on a long necklace, maybe some brooches at the sides & you're golden
You'd have to cut the bottom to make it flat and not asymmetrical. But yeah, it could work as a 1920's dress with some embellishments.

I'd love to see the versions that didn't work to know the kind of pitfalls people can run into. And more versions with different lengths of cuts!
Me too! I bought this beautiful fabric to do this & I'm too afraid to make a cut because I can't visualize what can go wrong!
@@tatchik77 always prototype using muslin or similar before using the full expensive fabric. But for sewing projects, having scraps of the same expensive fabric in advance to check out how different seam finishes will feel and look and so on is really good, so buy more fabric than you think you need (plus it gives you extra fabric for future repairs).

I'm not much of a dress person, but I do wanna make this now 😂!
I had a little top styled similar to this many years ago. It fell just about 6-8" below my waist. The waist had been lightly elasticized, with the sides sewn up to create armholes so still a pullover. No adjusting, pinching fabric or belting necessary - just thow on and go! It was perfect for everything in the summer ... as a beach cover, as a top over shorts and jeans. I wore it to death. Another small but significant difference was that the shoulders were cut wide and slightly shirred to just 'cap' the shoulders - added to it's value as a beach/sun coverup.
Re this one, for those of us a bit too modest to have the sides open, those decorative pins Orly showed a few episodes ago to cinch jeans waistbands could be used to pinch the front and back sides together and add a stylish touch.
I was a bit doubtful just looking at the tiktok image but now..... wow. That looks really great. I can see how the type of fabric used would probably make all the difference though. Very cool. Please post more like this. (im a beginner at sewing and this is probably about the extent of my skill at the moment)

I'm so glad you made this dress because i've always wondered how it truly sat on the body but didn't want to waste fabric by cutting it incorrectly or it didn't look the way it looked in the animation. I think it looks amazing! This is, by far, the easiest dress to make and it's no sew!
I love this zero-waste technique, I created something with a similar silhouette using 3 parallel slashes for a deep v neckline!

I've got a couple of these now 😅 I used a "3yards for $3" from Walmart, made sure the short side would fall on my hip (didn't turn like Orly did, arm holes parallel to the shorter side). Its floor length and the fits like something out of a Greek painting 😍 added a v neck in the front, but it wasn't necessary; cute both ways.
Another option she doesn't seem to mention but could 1000% work is clothing tape to keep it in place instead of sewing it. You could use a solid high grade clothing tape to put it where you want it, wear it, style it and remove after, then do it other ways with the tape again. It give you tons of play, tons of ways to wear, and lots of options.
Stretch velvet would be beautiful... and I like the idea of tying or even using a pretty broach at the waist to change up that hemline a bit.

Two things I’ve learned from doing this for myself: pick a fabric that doesn’t have an obvious front and back. And the side ‘seam’ will be the length of your side cut plus the fabric between that cut and the selvedge.
Instead of cutting 24 inches, I only cut 12, but that left a really short side seam.
This dress is sooo Smart! A No-Sew dress! Who would've thought? I love this! So classic & easy - Thank you Orly for those who don't have sewing machines... so many dresses can be made even printed with the right stretchy fabric with a solid long sleeve top underneath, etc. We can make it our own! 🙂
Life is like a 360 degree circle I've made about 1000 of these in the last 10 yrs I've been seeing and making dresses so long and I keep seeing all of my old style of dresses coming back in style 😮
Wow, it looks even better than the virtual mockup! It reminds me of some historical ways of making dresses by starting with a rectangle and inserting triangles to the skirt.
I do worry that the edges might fray on the first wash (especially if you use a woven fabric instead of a knit) and that over time the corners of the slits may tear or the fabric around them may stretch and deform. Maybe one could do a narrow rolled hem and put some reinforcing stitches at the corners of the slits.

The way you have an opening at the hip reminds me of victorian(i think) pockets. They were basically purses you wore under your decorative top layer and you would reach into them via a slit. Alternately if you just gather the lose fabric at the sides that would be a roaring 20s dress. If the shoulders tear and you use a couple of broaches to hold it together it turns into something vaguely greco roman.

Love that you did this video explaining. Really grateful. As a beginner I didn't figure it out but I upcycled a giant scarf and added long, super dramatic ties at the shoulder then wore a long baggy shirt underneath for a Lagenlook style .

As someone who definitely needs a bra...you could get some extra fabric and either make a tube top (one seam) or just wrap around the back and pin to the bra in the front to cover the sides. A camisole would work too or maybe a tank top. Finally, I kind of liked how it looked on her open on the sides with the belt before overlapping, so maybe a contrasting bodycon tube or tank dress underneath.

I was also wondering if making the H shape more like an A but not that far, just to make it roomier at the front and the correct fit at the back. No. It needs to be wider near the top. I can't work it out. 😂 Safer just to put a cami under it.

I LOVE how easy you make these outfits, I did the wrap pants one and then the easy bustier! This dress is so cool and it got me thinking... Instead of a "boingy" fabric, could you use a stiffer upholstery fabric with more weight to it? I have two fabrics that I have been trying to find a good project for and this seems to be the one but want to see what your incredible insight thinks about it. Oh, what a great travel dress!
I think the reason the springy fabric matches the best is because of how fabric simulations end up in general. It can be hard to simulate collisions so something like a thick and heavy bath towel is kind of difficult to come across without looking like the object is made out of bricks or stretchy fabric.
I love this so much, and I have a perfect rayon/Lycra knit for it, in several colors. So I guess I know what I’m making this weekend. Plus I feel like it’ll also be super cute for fall, with the right long sleeved shirt or blouse worn under it and (obviously!) some cool boots.😊
That less than 5 dollar fabric turned into a thousand dollar designer dress with less effort and in only 5 to 10 minutes. Love it

Layered in different colors. You could either cut them at exactly the same angle for just a peek of color here and there or you could do different angles for more color flash (and maybe a bit more coverage as well) at the hem.

I love this! I had a dress like this “back in the day” and the drapey fabric was so flattering AND comfy. Not sure I could pull off the look these days. I’m short and can’t tolerate heels anymore. 🤷♀️ But, my lovely daughters would rock it.

This looks awesome. I'd cut the side slits probably shorter but that's the beauty of this style. You can do what you want 😊
One thing I noticed in my own dabbling is that if you're looking to use fabric with a printed pattern, you might want to line it with a solid color fabric because most printed knits with this kind of material are only printed on one side of the fabric.
Lining it could affect the drape but it would conceal the unprinted side of the fabric

Heads-up that if you use a woven fabric, you'll need to finish the raw edges somehow. Otherwise it will unravel.

Also if you don’t wanna sew the sides, you could always pin it in a way so you can be easy and breezy without a belt but have the sides covered nicely
You could put some snaps along the sleeve slices for some extra coverage and still be able to move the flowy parts around.

Hi Orly! Me again...thought this might warrant an additional comment. You could easily add pockets when the slit is long like yours. I ❤ a dress w/discreet pockets... Orly...DIY Weddings (Bridesmaid), Graduation, Vacation, Design on a Dime (you needa dress last min but don't either have the $ or time) sorta events coming to mind rn??? Totally customizable! ❤
If you get little elastics like they use on horses manes you could make temporary 'coin' buttons for the sides (or the wings) which can be removed after with no need for buttonholes.
