  • After you've dug and divided the peony roots, it's time to replant some of the divisions.

It's harder to judge the depth for bare root plants in store packs or to see the eyes, any advise on the planting depth fo them please

All the resources say to plant the eyes 1-2 inches below the surface of the soil. Very hard to judge this! If you get the depth wrong, fear not because the peony is resourceful and will grow new eyes (buds) at the proper depth so that it can bloom.

I'm ready to transplant my peony patch this fall. They've declined because a tree was planted next to them, and it has grown enough to shade the patch for a few years. When I dig them up, with I find any white eyes, when they have not bloomed for a few years?
Thank you for all your shared information.

It's good that you're going to move the peonies - they don't like the shade and their roots don't like competing with tree roots. You should see white/pink buds on your roots. I'm not sure how much they'll bloom the first year after transplanting, especially since they've been shaded for a while. But you'll be amazed how fast they settle in to their new spot, and you'll have blooms for years and years. Good luck with the transplanting this fall!
