Overwintering Peony Roots & Planting More Tulips! Flower Farming in Zone 5A, Sunshine and Flora

We have already had snow but there are still a few things I need to get done in the garden before winter really sets in! One is planting more of my tulip bulbs, the other is overwintering my peony roots. I am so excited to have these done!

I love peonies! I can't get enough of them. I keep planting more every year. I also really enjoy the peony type tulips too. Can't wait to see yours bloom in the future. I think my bowl of beauty variety is my favorite so far.

I have potted up roots and put in pots. This yr i did crates. And put in the basement. Kept nice and one species bloomed. I would be afraid its too cold there to leave that outside. Cant wait to see if it works. Im zone 5a and it would be helpful to not put in basement. Best of luck!

I know you can get really cold there, are you going to be putting any winter protection around the peonies ? I live in zone 6a and I know containers can turn into a block of ice, I’m still learning at a ripe old age, can peonies be frozen solid and not kill them? 🎄🎄💚🙃

I will probably have some more crates of planted bulbs around them. If we get snow, that will help insulate them

I have my peony roots ready in soil in a crate. Now… where should I put the crate? On the shady north side of the house? Partial sun/shade? Blocked from wind? Help! I’m in zone 7.

I would say somewhere that they will still get moisture from the winter whether you get snow or rain.
