I divided some last year in May, and they didn't look great that summer. They look great this year. So if you divide now, the plants survive with some watering and care, but they won't likely look good until next year.
Can they be divided on the ground? I have some clumps that are growing wide onto a pathway and just want to make them narrower by splitting them but leaving half on the ground. Is late September-early October a good time to do this?
I have narrowed them up before. I only dig up the part that is crowding other things and leave the rest of the plant in the ground. September and October are great months to do this because we're cooling off. Here in Michigan, I try to get all my fall digging, dividing, and planting dine by mid October so the plants have a little time to root in before it gets cold.
