Melissa is a joy to watch perform. I won't throw out the underrated term, because her fanbase knows how much of a phenom she is. That's not a guitar Jon, it an electric mandolin.
One of the all-time greatest covers! It's fantastic to see a reaction to it! I saw her live so many times, starting in '89 when she was playing smaller theaters, and the energy she put out into the room could barely be contained by the walls. There was something almost a little feral about her energy and it was incredible to experience. She did a lot of these extended versions of songs where the band could just play and have fun. It was truly a phenomenal time for music, laying the groundwork for what was to come in the '90's. It was also amusing that people in the general public didn't know she was gay lol. She was still kind of our little secret, before she really exploded into the mainstream. What a time to be alive! Also, as someone else pointed out, that's an electric mandolin.
