I had been struggling with this concept bc others get far too technical and only serve to add confusion. 🙄 You have literally resolved an issue I’ve been trying to figure out for a couple of months with two simple rules (with some examples of when both will work)-nouns, use Kein, verbs and adjectives, use nicht! Thank you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I am taking classes on Duolingo and Busuu. Duolingo provides no context to why things are the way they are. Busuu does a better job at times, but I can always rely on Anja to provide me with a great explanation and example. This was very helpful!!
I'm also doing lessons on Duo and it is maddeningly unhelpful when it comes to understanding the grammar. Like you, I found that it's most helpful when you do it in conjunction with other apps or other sources

For the Swedes out there! Kein/kine means inga/ingen and nicht means inte
Nicht is rather like "not" in English, and kein is more like "no." We do NOT have bananas, versus We have NO bananas. Or in your example, "I do NOT play piano," versus, "I play NO piano." Or "I do NOT speak German" versus "I speak NO German." Not is always related to the verb whereas no is related to the noun.

how wonderful this video is still up years later to catch up to me who just started learning German in 2023! And after starting it wasn't long before "nicht" versus "kein" came up, and immediately it was confusing, just with this video I think I got it (I mean at a basic level, I'm sure there are complications to come later, lol). This is a very useful distinction, thanks. I've heard people say "Ich spreche kein Deutsch," and also "Ich spreche Deutsch nicht." I see that if for example the context is one in which I wanted to convey that I could read some German, but I could not speak it, it would be best to use the latter expression, as in that case I want to emphasize the word 'sprechen'.

Would “ich spreche Deutsch nicht” make sense? The way i view it is if “not” fits in the sentence, then add it where “not” would go in english. I.e. der Rock ist nicht groß, the skirt is not big. However, if “not” doesn’t fit in the sentence add it to the end, i.e. ich trinke nicht, i do not drink. I wouldn’t say “ich nicht trinke” because that would be “i not drink.” Can someone clarify this?
