  • Alexander Thomas and Cecilia De Maria perform an original arrangement of this enduring twentieth century masterwork, originally composed for strings.
This arrangement has been quite a labour of love for me, having always felt a special connection to the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, in a way that I've not quite felt with any other composer. The music was originally composed for the acoustic of Gloucester Cathedral - a huge space with massive resonance. The string orchestra for which it was written were divided into three bodies of varying sizes, with the music written in dialogue between these groups in order to fully exploit the full repertoire of sounds in the instruments in combination with the qualities offered by the space. I have tried to emulate this wide pallet and express it in a new way, with the two harps working in dialogue at times but also in strong unison, employing the unique performance techniques at the harp's disposal to demonstrate all the variation that the composer wanted.

Wow that's so kind! That really means so much. I'm in the process of releasing the score so that it can be (hopefully) accessed more widely!

is strings music in the first place , the pizzicato and arpeggio's can't replace the power of bowings, I miss also the power of the pp and ff (double choire effects) between the 3 choires in the original score.

Thank you for stopping by! Remember that transcriptions and paraphrases exist (Liszt, Rachmaninov, Stokowski, Respighi ad nauseum) for the performers to explore and share the repertoire via their medium, rather than to replace or attempt to improve the original. The harp duo repertoire is very small so we are really working on expanding repertoire for performers and audiences to enjoy.
