Mr Robot, have a Google search if you haven't already for something called a Combination Box. On small Kuota's it controls the three systems of 'start', ;glow' and 'engine stop control'. the only other part missing I see on your engine is the stop solenoid. With these two items wired in, you could automate your install....or just go the cheaper route and just do switches. Thanks for the great video's!
on the front of the motor there is the fuel screw take it 1/4 turn richer and you will get 8hp-10hp more this engine had multiple power ratings all adjusted by the fuel and honestly you can go 3/4 turn anymore you run into area where EGT's become a bit of a issue and to go further you will need to turbo the motor and then you will be able to get way more than enough power to run 75mph or more. ua-cam.com/video/7M6sVQLBzw4/v-deo.html
Yes and no all mechanical diesel engines when loaded from a idle will puff a slight bit of soot its more when your 1/2 throttle or so and you give the beans does it throw soot and if soot goes away shortly after you give the beans to it again mechanical diesels have a mechanical fuel governance in the injection pump basically a puff of soot is normal if its a constant soot you got to much.
I believe that engine has what’s called a jerk pump! I don’t think there’s a provision for adjusting the fuel setting. You could pull the pump, and put larger plunger and barrels in it. What he’s talking about in the video is governer settings. Increasing the rpm’s. Differant thing. And even if you can adjust fuel. On that small of an engine, you can’t adjust too much. Minimal hp gain, lots of black smoke.
He is adding a turbo so the added fuel is needed and yes there is a fuel adjustment and just so you know that motor was sold in several different power outputs only difference was fuel delivery increase there is currently like 5-10 hp on the table just by upping fuel and once turbo is added well that # will double.
We engine swapped a snowmobile with a similar engine, a cat C1.1. We ran into the same problems with gearing and the governor. I ended up using a servo to run the fuel rack and a PID loop to run it all, cause the mechanical governor just wouldn’t cut it. If you do that make sure you don’t over rev it cause it will bend a push rod lol.
Great stuff! A couple suggestions... Lose the paper inline filter back at the tank. They aren't rated for diesel and have very little surface area to be used as a primary filter. I use a Wix 33972 all-plastic filter for the pre-position. Its coarse at 50 microns, so it doesn't wad up quickly but will protect the pump from large debris. Under the hood, get a Kubota fuel pedestal from a U17 or U35 excavator, part #52200-26750 That will let you run a Wix 33390 final filter which is common and has lots of area and a 10-micron rating to keep your injectors happy. Don't expect much from that little permanent magnet alternator. They are only about 20 amps, I believe but are fairly reliable. It's not hard to mount up a 1 wire alternator or something from a Kubota machine to get into the 40-60 amp range which is more like what you'll need if you were to turn everything on at once.
Thanks for the heads up on the filter. We did a video on the little alternator a few months ago and indeed thay make about 20 amps. 20 amps should be plenty for this rig. Keep in mind we put the car together for experiments and we will not be driving it at night.

@@robotcantina8957 Cool beans! I also noticed your mechanical fuel pump block off plate. If you have any issues with fueling at or near the max power/redline, you can easily add a stock mechanical lift pump to get fuel through the system quicker and keep the injection pump filled. Many factory Kubota machines use the same setup, despite only needing to cover a couple feet of distance and often even with a slight gravity feed effect. Tank to prefilter/water catch, then an electric lift pump, then to the mechanical lift pump, then the final fuel filter and then the injection pump.

If you want ultimate convenience for the glow plugs the Kubota makes a key cylinder with a glow plug switch inside it, all you have to do is turn the key so the glow plugs are on then turn the key all the way and the motor starts

Diesels won’t generate much heat until you put a load on it. Get some fuel burning! Oh, and you have to keep the glow plugs hot until you are actually cranking the engine. They cool off very fast. Love the experiment though. Very well made video. Kudos.
Adjusting the max governed rpm is simple and easy, but you will also have to shim the injection pump to bump the timing up for 3600 rpm operation. You will also have to adjust the torque screw, to give the engine more fuel per stroke. Also, that little electric fuel pump will supply plenty of fuel for the D722. I put a Kubota V1405 in a 1980 Triumph Spitfire. Added a turbo, injection pump camshaft advance timer, shimming the pump timing, and adjusted all three fuel delivery screws to make this engine rev to 4000 rpm, and produce 80 hp with 22 pounds of boost.

I'd say you figured out that the radiator is plenty big if it was able to send the temp gauge needle back to stone cold. I think you'll make a little more power with some heat in the engine too once you sort out the thermostat! Congrats on the 100k award!
For the fuel cutoff lever, I would use a 12v solenoid that pulls it to the RUN position when energized, and a return spring that pulls it the other way when the key is turned off. This way it can be fully operated with the key instead of adding some choke-type pull/push cable on the cabin.

Love the video's of little engines in small cars. But this is my favorite. Being very familiar with this kubota d722 I know that 75 hp is achievable with this engine.
I cannot praise the engine high enough, brilliant little power boxes! With the heating, I could idle my 18 hp Yanmar 3 cyl tractor all day and still keep my hand on the radiator, but when working hard she warm up quickly enough!😀
My 81VW Rabbit Diesel had 48 horsepower and a 4 speed manual. It was a high revving diesel and was spinning at 5400rpm at 80mph....basically screaming at the top of it's lungs.
You just keep hitting it out of the park. I bet when the turbo goes on the car will make easy 70 plus MPH. If you keep this up I bet you will have 500K by next year. Have a blessed week.
Small Diesel engines like that don’t make a lot of heat at idle, the small amount of coolant that flows through the thermostat when closed may be enough to prevent the engine from reaching operating temp. I’m curious if it gets to the proper temp while driving.
Puutting the heater core in the cooling loop may do most of your winter engine cooling. You may need under hood valving to cut out the heater in summer. With all the other adaptations you are doing, this should be just one more. I would think about putting a battery keeper on it. adding the load of the generator may drain your currently limited engine power, never mind an electric cooling fan. It will be amazing to see the little engine working up where it should. Good luck.
Back in the 60s, there was a company that would make adapters, so you could put almost any engine in any vehicle, a lot of folks put GM V-8s in the back of their Porsches, or Ford Pinto motors in the back of VW vans. The company was called crown adapters, and I believe they were located in California, My neighbor put a Ford V8 in the front of his Austin Healey 3000, that car was insanely fast, At the time old Healeys weren’t classic cars, Just an old car, So it wasn’t sacrilege to modify it

Just to let you know: usually turbocharged Diesel engines have nozzles in the crankase that spray the bottom of the pistons with engine oil to keep em cool. (VW, Mercedes) Looking forward to see the manufacturing process off theese😜
A turbo and manifold for the D-1105T theoretically should work on your 722. But it’ll need some more fuel, and with that comes the need for a pyrometer, it’s much easier to put one in a manifold on a table than on an engine with the turbo already mounted, I wish someone would have told me that before I attempted it.
You don't need the governor. Just use a cable to pull the fuel lever directly from the accelerator pedal to the injection pump and use a return spring to return the lever, it will work perfect. 👌

The weirdest thing is to put the throttle to the floor, let it rev until it hits the governor, keep the throttle on the floor, push in the clutch and take your sweet old time to shift into another gear, let clutch out. Definitely a tractor! I had to add springs to the Kubota governor flyball unit to get it to see 3700 rpm. Mine was set at 1800 rpm to power a light tower. I used the engine mounted diaphragm fuel pump to provide vacuum to the brake master cylinder unit. Not bad, but way better than using 2 feet to push the brake lever. Keep up the good work!

It should be pretty easy to get most of those gauges to work, including the tach and temperature gauge. For the temperature gauge, just remove the temperature sender from the original engine, and I believe several manufacturers make converters that can read an alternator signal and generate a tach signal from it.

@robot cantina you may look at the OEM temp rating for the thermostat in the engine. I have a small diesel powered (non turbo) nissan 720 pickup, it's thermostat is surprisingly low temp rating, I want to say it's 160°... as well as the non turbo older tractors I work on frequently, I see OEM temps on thermostats seem to run more like 160-180° F rather than the 190 ish that you see on gasoline engines.
I lived in Kingman for a while. Loved that little town but moved for work. Spent lots of time in Hutchinson. Great family based part of the USA. The Amish in Yoder are awesome folks.
Jimbo, its clear to me you're applying several things you've learned on the insight on this car and it has made this series even more enjoyable! I can't wait to see what kind of tricks you pull out of your sleeve when you turbocharge this engine, especially for wastegate/boost control and pressure relief. I'm sure you already have tons of ideas. I am going to give you some brain waves I had for adding vacuum the brake booster that I am sure you've already considered. First, electric vacuum pumps will work great for creating a vacuum source, however, it would be an idea to get a vacuum canister to supply the vacuum to the booster. LOTS of forced induction cars use this, and even some cars use this for locks, 4-wheel drive actuators, and even headlights and wipers/cowl actuators(Damn you GM and the C3!). If you need any help sourcing OEM components I would be happy to help. There are also belt driven vacuum pumps that have been used on a lot of late model vehicles. I think this would be the most reliable vacuum source as they are 100% mechanical. Secondly, every vacuum brake booster usually has a check valve build in or has one in the supply. Provided the booster is in good shape, this would potentially reduce the need for constant vacuum, just something to keep in mind. Keep cranking out videos, can't get enough of these!
@@ThisIsReMarkable My 1976 Volvo had a camshaft-driven vacuum pump to guarantee enough assisted braking if the engine stalled. I think this feature was discontinued on later models.
Would be a good idea to monitor exhaust gas temperatures now and in the future with the turbocharger. it'll give you an idea of how hard the engine is working under load

Great idea!

on the front of the motor there is the fuel screw take it 1/4 turn richer and you will get 8hp-10hp more this engine had multiple power ratings all adjusted by the fuel and honestly you can go 3/4 turn anymore you run into area where EGT's become a bit of a issue and to go further you will need to turbo the motor and then you will be able to get way more than enough power to run 75mph or more.
ua-cam.com/video/7M6sVQLBzw4/v-deo.html
Yes and no all mechanical diesel engines when loaded from a idle will puff a slight bit of soot its more when your 1/2 throttle or so and you give the beans does it throw soot and if soot goes away shortly after you give the beans to it again mechanical diesels have a mechanical fuel governance in the injection pump basically a puff of soot is normal if its a constant soot you got to much.
we used to do that with older Volkswagen TD engine! :) the important thing is to keep an eye on the EGT!
@@michaelnelson9140 watch the video I linked in my original post it shows step by step how to turn the fuel up so yes it is able to be adjusted.

Turbo will definitely help
A little turbo on this thing is sure to really wake it up 👌👌

Turbo diesel Spitfire.... lol. As I recall my '79 made about 55hp with the 1.5l iron lump under the bonnet.

I'd say you figured out that the radiator is plenty big if it was able to send the temp gauge needle back to stone cold. I think you'll make a little more power with some heat in the engine too once you sort out the thermostat! Congrats on the 100k award!
Where’s the DEF tank going and the EGR with the particulate exhaust with re-gen going to be installed. 😂
For the fuel cutoff lever, I would use a 12v solenoid that pulls it to the RUN position when energized, and a return spring that pulls it the other way when the key is turned off. This way it can be fully operated with the key instead of adding some choke-type pull/push cable on the cabin.
That’s a good idea

At my local nhra track the battery needs to be in a sealed box when it’s placed in the same compartment as a fuel cell.
I had 9psi with 60trim turbo on my 1.9L Saturn. That 5 speed can handle the Power just fine. Jut not the diff, no burnouts.
Love the video's of little engines in small cars. But this is my favorite. Being very familiar with this kubota d722 I know that 75 hp is achievable with this engine.
tractor supply has a fuel shutoff cable you can install that is a pull to stop. Or you can get the solenoid from a 12v dodge off ebay for cheap.

Good luck.
Guy is a hero
Back in the 60s, there was a company that would make adapters, so you could put almost any engine in any vehicle, a lot of folks put GM V-8s in the back of their Porsches, or Ford Pinto motors in the back of VW vans. The company was called crown adapters, and I believe they were located in California, My neighbor put a Ford V8 in the front of his Austin Healey 3000, that car was insanely fast, At the time old Healeys weren’t classic cars, Just an old car, So it wasn’t sacrilege to modify it
Best slow car videos! Hope you can turn the fuel up to go with that turbo. My beater daily is a saturn vue 5 speed manual. I take it to junkyards and everything. I call it the roach because it just won't die.

Just to let you know: usually turbocharged Diesel engines have nozzles in the crankase that spray the bottom of the pistons with engine oil to keep em cool. (VW, Mercedes)
Looking forward to see the manufacturing process off theese😜
A turbo and manifold for the D-1105T theoretically should work on your 722. But it’ll need some more fuel, and with that comes the need for a pyrometer, it’s much easier to put one in a manifold on a table than on an engine with the turbo already mounted, I wish someone would have told me that before I attempted it.
On those Kubota engines, you can take the governor bolt all the way out and run them up to valve float RPM without hurting them.
You don't need the governor.
Just use a cable to pull the fuel lever directly from the accelerator pedal to the injection pump and use a return spring to return the lever, it will work perfect. 👌
Ngl, that's the cutest little diesel I've ever seen! I love it!

Man, I *love* the "Majora's Mask" screens.
But unlike in Termina, here it's not the moon dropping on earth, but the garden gnomes attacking the workshop...
It should be pretty easy to get most of those gauges to work, including the tach and temperature gauge. For the temperature gauge, just remove the temperature sender from the original engine, and I believe several manufacturers make converters that can read an alternator signal and generate a tach signal from it.
Love that diesel engine sound.

The VW ALH diesel's vacuum pump runs directly off of the camshaft, no belt involved. I didn't realize that was unusual!
