"...mandatory single-point safety inspection..."
Would that be the full tank of gas, half-pack of cigarettes or the sunglasses? 😂👍
That would be a three point inspection. In Kansas, the car needs to have wheels in order to be street legal.
@@robotcantina8957 well that’s a 4 point inspection, unless it’s a three wheeler.
Coffee and donuts in case the popo show up and kick the tires......
I was thinking the single point was "yup, it's a car" 😂
@@Darisiabgal7573 LOL, so true!
10pm in Japan, robot before bed, thanks
10pm in the Philippines. Watching this before bed.
10am on east coast USA. Cantina and Coffee!

It's the next Sunday after this video was posted and in the evening and he has not posted one today,, hope everything's okay❤
Lol what are you doing here
"race of the century" or "race that takes a century" I suppose both could be accurate 😂
LOL, good point!
Starting to look like a BMW under the hood
Indeed, its a hot mess. I will try and simplify stuff once I get everything figured out.
@@robotcantina8957honestly that's half the appeal of this car, the jank-engineering under the hood is what makes this car interesting :)
Could be worse, could be a Ford Bronco.
It's not that bad, it just needs detail work. And a turbo compounding into the stupid charger😊
@@hoost3056 and bored out 30-over
Great video Jimbo, but my favorite parts are usually the quirky comments that you add. Such as: *Single Point Safety Inspection* 😂😅😂
Utterly mindblowing how much stuff you have engineered to awkwardly fit in that engine compartment. You've really pushed the limit of what a backyard mechanic is capable of in terms of mods!
The kid in me says i'd love to spend a day with you in your shop, but the engineer with no filter in me knows that would play out horribly. Love your work man!
My single rule is make stuff as inexpensive as possible. This channel doesn't generate much revenue and we have a double digit budget for every episode.
@@robotcantina8957double digit budget? That legitimately made me laugh 😁
Well. Understandably, for sure. Im just speaking from general experience, two like wise minds dont mix well in the theatre of engineering. Lol youll have 2 hours of brain storming different ideas and getting nothing done.
@@robotcantina8957 Your channel will kick off big time, just wait.
@@colestowing8695 these professionally enhanced episodes are a culmination of decades of skill, knowledge, and experience combined with tens of dollars
The newton meter can make power calculations easier. If you have the torque in newron meters and speed in radians per second you just have to multiply them together to get the power in watts. To convert rotational speed from rpm to radians per second, multiply by pi and divide by 30 (or if you only need an approximate figure, just divide by 10).
I suspect that most car and motorcycle enthusiasts will never accept tachometers that read in radians per second.
The factor pi/30 comes from:
From rpm to rotations per second: division by 60
From rotations to radians: multiply by 2*pi
Just as some extra background information :)
Y'all are a fuckin trip. I have owned and or built some really powerful cars and other things in my time, but I find a particular enjoyment and solace in the projects you present. It's true what they say about it being more fun driving a slow car fast thsn a fast car slow.
For sure! I spent 2 years driving a 62hp, NA diesel pickup truck with a 5sp manual. I got to 84mph downhill once. 70-72 on flat ground was doable but took a while. I think the diesel insight is faster than it lol
It's wild ain't it bro ... I must agree tho .. way mote fun to be able to push a car to its limits and have fun as apposed to a big toe on the peddle and your speeding (I did that to myself taken a 100hp 91 na Miata and dump a lil over 20k in it to have round 400hp , and it's fun af but can't keep it floored like stock or I be dead 😅).. peace and love bro
@@mastercricket7626 I knew a man with a Hennessy HPE700 Equipped C7. I meet him at autocross when it's brand new. 2 years later I met him at my job at a Mazda dealership. He still had the Vette, but bought an NC Miata because he could floor it everywhere and not get pulled over, unlike his rowdy and very obviously quick C7.
He said he drove the Miata like a daily driver and the C7 very rarely got much for miles on it over the handful of years he was coming into the dealership with his NC. (We had a GM store under the corporate umbrella, I could see documented milages on any car a customer had in our system. He maybe accumulated enough miles for a yearly oil change. Mostly it was tires (no surprise there 🤣)
@@goosenotmaverick1156 yeah they are great cars , but I can't speak on the not obnoxious fact as I'm one the assholes that has a hood dump and tuned my car to backfire on decel lol 😂 and man if I had access to ppls recors of driving and maintenance like that , I would be messing with them all the time , like o I k ow he will race me lmfao 😂.. peace and love bro
I had more fun in my '90 Festiva than any number of neck snappers. Not saying they weren't fun too.
Happy Mothers Day all my Cantina Nerds..! Let the fun begin.
I need to bring my '91 Geo Metro small block up for a "race". 3 cylinders of ground pounding excitement!
A Geo Metro is a serious race car when compared to the Supercharged intercooled Kubota D722 super mini diesel powered Honda Insight.
@@robotcantina8957btw jim there's actually an engine made by kubota that has an electronic controlled rack like you're trying to make which is the D902k, a variant of the D905 which is a 900cc version of your D722.
You can probably use parts off of that, though 3d printing is more fun
It is pretty interesting how you show us slowly how difficult engineering really is. The Insight was designed fairly well all things considered. Especially for when it came out.
Indeed, the original insight was a very well thought out car. My only issues is the gear ratios in the transmission. Seems like a lot of other folks don't like the ratios and there are a few mods that can be done to make the car more drivable.
First-gen Insight was designed with efficiency as a priority, which sacrificed most other things like cargo weight limit, number of seats, acceleration, doo-dads, etc. It was still available with air conditioning. :)
The car was basically Honda's test-bed for new hybrid and efficiency technologies, so they threw everything at the wall to see what would stick.
It's worth noting I've never had trouble getting up to speed on a highway on-ramp in mine.
Mandatory single point safety inspection, same as Boeing! 1st world luxury 😁
Very true!
You should take the diesel on power tour 😂
Man I miss the gnomes, hope they're doing alright!
my cars have 1000cc engines . if i raced them , it'd be the only race in history where every car was tied for last place .
Well in that case then they would also tie for first and you would hold all 3 podium spots 😅.. peace and love bro
Must be nice to have big blocks! I have 3 trucks all with 660 cc engines. Have them in 2 wheel, 4 wheel and all wheel drive. The all wheel drive is turning 5000 rpm's at 50 mph with 165X65X13 tires. Great in the rain though.
As someone in your 4% of viewers, I have been to the usa and have a $1 note, so i can compare it in person. Fwiw, larger than an aud$50
LOL, well, I didn't factor in situations like yours.
It would be super interesting to build something like this where the Kubota engine powers a generator that then charges/powers electrical... A diesel electric hybrid!
It would be great, like a train! 🎉
Right, like a train engine!
DeBoss Garage?? 🤔
The old Renault looks like a prime candidate for the 999cc engine that's the same base as the 670 . 55bhp straight from the box so a little light tune and you could go on a road trip, you might even meet some of your fans 👍
We're gonna drag race!
To legal speeds. 😂
For those of us in the UK, the currency conversion would be about £13.31 wide, cos we have no £1 notes (they went out in the 80s), so the engine's witdh is about 13 and a bit £1 coins (of the current generation, whether lizzies or charlies), or in £5 notes, that's working out to be £12.48, so cheaper to go with those I guess... :P
Thanks for the semi metric conversion!
Boost vs air volume are 2 different subjects. You're moving the same amount of air, but seeing less boost due to the loss of heat from the intercooler.
So now you could actually shove a little more air volume down it to reach the same boost as before
15:14 Jimbo : "nowhere else". Idaho : "Hold my beer"
Me over here in a rural Arkansas county (whole county has a population of around 16k, I moved out here for the peace that exists like that, and I found some.
My problem is, the one guy that comes by is bound to be doing like 80mph through all the corners and won't see me. While it may be quiet enough, it's not flat or straight enough over here where I'm at 😂
Honestly probably more likely to be passed by a SxS wondering what the hell that little Honda is doing out this way 😂
Completely possible up here in NoDak too.
@mudbunny6388 agreed, NoDak has the best "busy" roads
Happy coffee and Cantina drag racing....and Happy Mother's Day
When talking about car modification. You will immediately think about installing more powerful engines and entering into challenges of speed and power. But in this channel the opposite happens, put small engines and challenging physics. That's why I love this channel
Happy mothers day to the 3% !
Moving into rocket surgeon territory now! You never fail to peak my curiosity for what will happen next. Thanks!
Great idea basing the controls on GM step motors. Cheap, simple, easy and fits in a small car. Kinda reminds me of prom.
A skateboard wheel would work for an idler pulley. I've used them to make chain tensioners for mini bikes and go karts. I reckon if it works for a chain, a belt would also work just fine.
A skateboard wheel is bigger than the idler that I show in the video.
@@robotcantina8957 Oh, that's surprising. It looked to be a bit bigger than one. Fingers crossed the fuel rack adjuster clears the belt!
Im pretty sure 13hp is what the electric motor did stock. I think all together this thing had 80hp when new.
That race was so fast... I don't think your in Kansas anymore...
You might be in deleware... (Wayne's world)
👋 hey, I'm here in Delaware.... I'll glance out the window and see if I see him😁
Now I always watch to the end in case there are any extra goodies. This is cool though, controlling part of the fuel with an Arduino, can't wait to see how it works.
I think we can all agree.
Jimbo owns Sunday, on the Tube.
We can park in the middle of the road (other than the main highway) for duration too. Rural Eastern Washington and rural Kansas have much akin, though you guys should import a few hills, valleys and mountains, heh heh heh. My home county is not much smaller than Rhode Island, with a sweltering population of about 10K. Biggest towns are just over 1K. Spent 20 plus years in the city, came back to peace and quiet.
Indeed, we need some hills here. for testing purposes of course. I grew up in NY and Kansas is such a nice and quiet state. love it here.
@@robotcantina8957 I grew up with plateaus, coulees, sage brush, scab rock, and a buttload of wheat fields. Safe, quiet, boring.... beats the excitement of city life, sirens, gunshots, screaming idiots.... now if there's screaming idiots, tends to be drunk neighbors discussing politics.
This little car really is something unique. And I love how it just keeps getting weirder. :D
You need call Cletus McFarland out for a race
😂
In what, the Shyster? 😂
I'd love to know what the "single point safety inspection" consisted of! Top work Jimbo........
Tires have air in them and seem to roll ok.
That 1 second difference in the acceleration test for the normal Insight can easily be explained by the altitude you're at.
Interesting....I think we are at 1400 ft. Hmmm I recken that makes a difference.
@@robotcantina8957 yes it does. About 2% lower atmospheric pressure per 1,000 foot elevation. That's roughly 3% less horsepower for you, coupled with a higher than standard temperature would probably account for most of the lost performance, the rest I would attribute to normal wear of the engine. Love your channel and voice over narration. Meh, stupidcharger, and other 1 liners are a wonderful way to start my Sunday mornings!
VCR controls? Where is the love for Beta? 😁
Alrighty let’s get this project into hight gear, where did I leave my coffee? 🎉
Stock Honda vs diesel Honda. This is going to be one LLLLLOOOONNNNGGGGG video.
Always leaving us wanting more. Great video, see you next week!
Good stuff Jimbo 👍. It makes me appreciate all the engineering that has gone into my VW tdi to make it operate properly.
As always, you've proved to the world that lawnmower engines can power cars that actually look like cars. The next chapter should be nice and technical.
When you launched both those beasts i was praying your neck could handle the thrust lol
LOL...The diesel car launches like a sack of feathers falling from a table top.
I think the one with with racing stripes on the hood will win. are those racing stripes?
I Gotta Whistle that theme 16:00 song every Sunday.. ❤❤❤
The VCR controls were very helpful. Thank you
Crazy amount of engineering being put into this engine now, I love it. You've basically added the "computer" from modern cars on to the dinky little Kubota diesel.
Good morning! Thank you for the update 😊
You could add a tailpipe turbo . This would allow you to reduce parasitic losses from the SC by reducing its boost , maintain room under the hood , cooler operating ... then add propane boost to increase the diesel's operating efficiency, thereby increasing output and reducing soot .
Love it, this is why I'm subscribed. I hope you keep going with modifying and tinkering on these Hondas.
please continue with this serie! It's super intresting and useful. Also thanks for provide the metric system along
Love it! Thanks Jimbo!
In next week's episide, a 1982 Tercel and a 2001 Prius face off...
I wonder if that one company that recently made super advanced pistons would be able and willing to help this goofy project lol.
Ah found it again, the golf ball pitted Speed of Air piston head.
Wild idea: maybe a TBW throttle before the stupidcharger could be used to control the boost and limit the pumping loss in the stupidcharger?
I see you used the Boeing approach with your single point inspection 😂😂
This thing just keeps getting better and better with each video. Between you and the Russian channel Garage 54 I never run out of content to view when it comes to experimenting on vehicles
Great episode as always!
Thanks for the Great Videos, Jimbo. Really looking forward to seeing what the little Kubota can do with the electronic wizardry.
Love this so much. I saw an insight on market place in my town just the other day and last week saw one actually driving around. It’s funny what you start noticing in your daily life when you get interested in different subjects. It would be great if you can get this diesel to go as fast as the factory car. But it seems like a bit of a stretch. Happy engineering!
Just finishing my second cup of coffee. watching the video and reading the comments. Great way to start a new week! A coupe of belly laughs, a bit of humor, some wizardry, tech advice and crazy comments! GOTTA LOVE IT! Thanks Jimbo!
☕️🥓🍳 and The most anticipated video of the week. I learned a lot today. New measument standards "2 bucks wide".
And how to drag race on public roads legally 🏁👍
Happy Jimbo day. Another great video. Love your work 👍
Another great video!!! Love this content!
Just letting you know i really enjoy your content and miss it when there is no new episodes! Keep up the great work!
Absolutely awesome episode
You need to put that larger less restrictive intercooler on there. I'm sure it'll fit even if it partly occludes the radiator.
He neeeds turbo
And keep the supercharger.
Its the little things like "doing the math" for us as well as what you in general keeps me glued to this channel!
Best automotive channel on all of UA-cam!
Maybe for another project you upgrade the electrics on the "regular" insight to see if you could get more power. Not sure if its even possible but yeah sounds interesting.
I was actually surprised how "fast" the original, tired model was.
so was I... LOL, I thought it was going to be a closer race.
The acceleration may not be great, but the top speed is crazy. Here's a guy racing one, he hits 125 at one point

Thank You Jimbo, a great series............Jay
Oh Yeah 🏁🏁
Wow, not a stick of duct tape on this build!
The IMA motor on insights and civic hybrids have the advantage of delivering instant torque at any rpm so while 20 ft lbs isn't much the gas motor only makes about 90 ft lbs at a certain rpm band and that's a noticeable increase when you're getting 20%+ more torque. I love my 03 civic hybrid it feels quick when you drive it hard because of that extra oomph the IMA adds and manual transmissions are an amazing Duo of fun and tech that gets me 40+ mpg when I do drive it more civilized
From what I understand the Civic Hybrid has a very reasonable gear set in the transmission and are great cars. The Insight has a weird set of ratios, and when the IMA kicks in its noticeable, but on my car it seems it takes a few moment after a gear change before the IMA starts helping.
The robots are taking over! Great work Sir
Ok i think I was wrong about what I wanted out of this channel. Diesel electric hybrid was kind of a weird choice. I like your plans. Good stuff.
Upgarage has a US location now...
Love it Jimbo (Past, Current & Future Jimbo). I'm really looking forward to seeing the "Jungle Controls" in action. Go Jimbo!!😁
I won't lie Jimmy. It's been a long hard week. I normally enjoy your videos but tonight I'll have to revisit it.
Facinating, as alwayse.
Can't wait for the results!🆒😎👍!
Love the drag race. I'm behind on a couple videos but a computer-controlled fuel rack is really cool. I like how well the 3d prints are working out
You are officially faster then my campervan. By quite a margin actually! It can run full throttle al day long at 75mph though.
Congratulations
Pure RC Sunday enjoyment. 👊🤙
Love it.... just love it!
I noticed that there hasn't been any gnome attacks lately. did you run them over with the insight? 🤣🤣
I almost put a gnome attack in this video, but I ran out of time when editing.
Another great one :)
Well done Jimbo 😎
I would love to see the Kubota being a generator to charge batteries for an electric motor. So you can run a setup with a small amount of batteries but have the range of or diesel tank.
That 3/4 shift was sweet !
Cool stuff!
Being completely off grid it was interesting to see how many amps that insite was drawing. Neat test
Your "normal" Insight is as quick as my 1966 sports car MGB GT.
I continue to love this channel. I drove a stock Insight for a decade, before putting a K24 engine in it. Now I'm getting another after moving to New Zealand and plan to replace the hybrid battery with lithium, and "overclock" the motor.
I understand the IMA system works entirely independent of the ECU. Possibly, you could get your supercharged diesel working with a lithium powered hybrid motor. One person reportedly got a 1.9 TDI working, with the Insight IMA motor bolted to it.
If I wasn't tornado phobic I'd take ya up on that amount of traffic, that is wonderful. We're affiliated with Air-Xcel in Wichita and go to meeting with them. They are so nonchalant about the tornados. I'm from SE Tn so my first thought is oh shit ! A 20mph wind is windy here. lol
A lot of houses here have tornado shelters, so no worries . The wind is something else. Its tough filming fuel economy tests and acceleration tests when there isn't any wind.
Nothing like waking up to robot cantina and a cup of coffee
"Race of the century" Ahem. You mean "Race which takes a century."
Awesome content!
I am excited to see how the new fuel control and boost control works
Happy Mother's Day and I look forward to next week's video with the modified fuel rack.
