  • Today we're going to see what it's like to stay in a pod (or capsule) hotel in Kyoto, Japan. It's always been my dream to stay in one in their country of origin, and finally I had my chance.
But what is a pod hotel?
Pod hotels, also known as capsule hotels, originated in Japan in the late 1970s to provide affordable and convenient accommodations for salarymen who missed the last train home. The first capsule hotel, the Capsule Inn Osaka, was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa and featured compact sleeping quarters stacked side by side. Pod hotels quickly gained popularity due to their affordability, convenience, and efficient use of space. They offered a basic yet comfortable place to sleep, with amenities like communal bathrooms, lockers, and sometimes a communal lounge or dining area.
Today, pod hotels are found in various countries around the world but remain closely associated with Japan as symbols of innovation and efficiency in hospitality.
