- At least seven people, including the suspect, are dead after a stabbing rampage at an Australian mall outside of Sydney. Eight others, including a 9-month-old baby, were severely injured and the suspect was killed by a lone police officer. NBC News’ Josh Lederman reports.

If you watch all the footages, you can see the attacker not attacking men. You can see 2 men talking to each other with their backs facing the attacker and they weren't attacked.
He was only targeting women, the male security were attacked from helping other people

A lot of those stats come from 16-19 year olds who are in gangs and shooting at each other . It's not that they're victims of crazy mass shooters. Mass shooting were rare in Australia as well, but they still banned firearms. So why make that stupid comment at the end?
We still had them occurring much more frequently than since the 1996 ban. We had a public mass shooting in 1987, 1988, 1992, then a really bad one in 1996. After the gun ban in 1996, we've had 0 public mass shootings. There has been a total of one shooting deemed as a "mass shooting" in Australia in the 28 years since 1996 and that was a domestic incident in a home. Where as previously to 1996, public shootings were 'rare compared to the US, but we did have them every couple of years. Not one in the last 28 years.

Because Australians and Americans are different, culturally etc. I’m an immigrant in the US and I do agree about having a gun here. People can be so much “postal” here, it is large country with a large population with huge demographic. It is not about those people who own guns and use them appropriately, but is about how you can protect yourself, if noe one helps you OR the police are kinda “tied.”

Exactly right. Unfortunately Australian citizens aren't legally allowed to carry guns or even knives and mace for self-defence. Some still do, however, carry a knife regardless but that's rare. This one man could have easily been stopped by a bullet when he first began his attack.

1) Australia has had less than 15 violent mass casualty events, totalling less than 100 victims overall.

There are reasons mass murder occurs a lot less frequently in Australia than the US. One of the main reasons is due to the much, much smaller population, with another being due to the gun legislation being introduced which saw a ban on semi-automatic weapons following the mass shooting at Port Arthur in 1996. I cannot say it would ever be possible for mass murder to be completely eradicated in Australia. There have been at least seven mass killings since then, including a vehicle attack in downtown Melbourne in 2017.

Also, if I understand correctly, only 1/5 of all the banned weapons were surrendered after the the law passed, so at least a small portion of your populace still has a backbone.

@@helenpauls1496Of the last 3 public massacre attempts in Texas, 2 were largely unsuccessful and were because of either cops acting as guards, or because of armed citizens. The only one that was successful, was because it happened in a place that prevented law abiding citizens from legally carrying guns by force of law, and had no armed guards on scene to stop the maniac. Even then, he was shot at and chased down by neighboring citizens in surrounding homes who could be armed and was ultimately killed before law enforcement could find him.
