Skillet has become very outspoken lately on their political views. It’s caused a lot of fans to walk away, and they’ve received a lot of hate. This song is addressing that.
John said in an interview about the song (paraphrase), 'In a world gone mad, do you want to be popular?' They are saying now is maybe a good time to be unpopular. And, yeah, they've gotten a lot of blowback over the last several years for stances they've taken on various thing. A bit ironically, they are quite popular... just the most popular band many haven't heard of, hehe. They are one of the best selling bands this century, I can't recall how many platinums, most streamed rock song (Monster), etc. They've been at it over 30 years, and I think have 11 albums. Monster was a hit in popularity, but IMO, no where near their best stuff. I hope you guys dive in, because they really are an incredible band. Monster and Unpopular are fairly straight-forward rock songs, but they have some great metal, symphonic metal, ballads, anthemic songs, motion picture soundtrack like epic stuff, etc. On many of the songs, John & Jen (the drummer) trade off vocals and blend, creating vocal magic!
