Taylor, a little known fact, Skillet is a Christian band and the Christian community didn't like the part where he says, "I feel like a monster." in that deep monster voice, because it resembled too close to be demonic. So Skillet changed his voice back to his normal voice for the radio version.

As a Desert Shield/Storm veteran with combat-related PTSD, Monster speaks to me in very deep ways. Before I got help from the VA, my monster was always JUST beneath the surface, waiting to spring at the slightest trigger. Thankfully, I never struck my wife or children in anger, but the monster is big, ugly and mean. The monster is responsible for at least 22 veteran suicides a day. I refuse to be one of the 22. I have too much to live for. Someone else mentioned Psycho in My Head, by Skillet. I second that! It's really hard to pick ONE Skillet song, though. They are a great band.

    • @wallywest2360

Sorry you have to deal with that. I've never been under that kind of stress myself, and that's probably a good thing. I definitely have a monster just below the surface and the few times it has almost come out has made me afraid of what would happen to the point where I avoid conflict of most any kind just to be safe.

Skillet has been around since 1996, but they didn't get their first radio hit ("Hero") until 2009. That's 13 long years of dedicated hard work with very little reward, and frontman John Cooper has said he was tempted many times during that period to just end the whole thing. But starting with the popularity of their album "Awake", mainstream listeners really began to appreciate Skillet, and now they're one of the biggest bands in the world...Christian or otherwise.

As someone who battles the demons of mental health issues I can relate to coming to terms with the monster inside. I have been diagnosed with what I call an alphabet soup relating to mental
    health.
    1 is PTSD
2 is schizoaffective disorder with mixed features of bipolar
    3 is adhd
    4 is possibly autism
So yes the way you describe the "monster" coming to the surface and where it stems from is 💯 accurate inmo.

It's crazy to me that people dont realize Skillet is a Christian rock band. It's what all of their songs are about. All of them. He feels like a monster and wants someone to come and fix his nature. all of them.

I suffer from depression and suicidal tenancies as well as PPD (Paranoid Personality Disorder).
Everyone does have a monster inside them. It's like sometimes I'm okay but other days. It feels like another part of me is trying to destroy me. I try to hold in the anger but get extreme sore heads doing so. It sucks man!

About a year ago my monster and I had a pretty big face to face. I fed that thing some SSRIs and it's been dormant.

You should check out "Big Bad Wolf" By In This Moment. It's a very similar message to this song, but Maria Brink's take on this subject.

Always interesting to see different takes on songs like this. Skillet has quite a few good ones!
If you're open to suggestions, three I think are meaningful and great songs:
The Part That Hurts the Most - Thousand Foot Krutch
    Better Lie - Ghostseeker
Out of my Head - The SIDH featuring SounDiver

I let my monster come to the surface a long time ago. I became a stronger person and able to survive what would break the majority of people

You should see Jen the drummer on her spinning drum kit. She's one BADA** drummer.

Obviously, this "monster" is what Jung called the shadow. According to Jung, the shadow is a problem as long as we do not "integrate" it (in jungian terms). I suggest to anyone who is interested into this inner personnal work to dive into this topic. It's about the "ugly" things inside ourselves that we don't want to recognize as it is because we perceive those inner materials as a threat to the picture we have of ourselves. So it's directly link with identification. As a therapist myself and a person who work on himself, I think that working on one's own shadow is one of the most important key for personnal realization.

I'm aware of the Monster inside me, and I don't mind it coming up. The Monster is basicly my identity. I'm just keeping it down for the well being of the people arround me.
