Introducing crit heals, an incredibly important part of being a great medic. Expect much more medic content in preparation for matchmaking! I'll be damned if the medics in matches are going to suck.
***** Your videos made me a better medic, now the medic is my favorite class and I have the most playtime with him. AND I'm copy-ing you I almost got the same cosmetics as you >:D [EDIT] Well as your outro medic cosmetic' tho...
Parker Matchett I think he meant the "I wish you all the greatest luck in your future medic endeavors" as Mr. Paladin says "I hope this helps you in your future endeavors" although I may be wrong.
ArraySeven, I just wanted to thank you for making these Medic guides. I recently decided to make Medic my main, despite Medic being my least played class (with fewer than 20 hours out of 1000+ total), so these guides as well as others have really helped me improve my game. Just today, I was playing Medic in a server and got called a really good Medic. Then I received a shocked reaction when I told them how little I've played Medic. Regardless, thank you for the wonderful tips and I hope you continue to make more. :D
3:47 You heard it here first, folks! Only heal the black person minimally, but heal the big strong white man as much as you can! Thanks for the advice, ArraySeven! (Yes this is a joke)
IHE Fan 97 that's because black man fights better even being drunk, while big white fatty has to be looked after non stop, otherwise he may decide that eating his lunch in the middle of the battlefield is a good idea.
It probably adds to the joke that that's pretty much how a lot of doctors act in real life, habitually under-prescribing black people while getting white people hooked on opiates.
Oh neat, I did't know about this boosted heal rate, and i've been playing for years. Infact, just 20 minutes ago in a dustbowl game, I waited outside of spawn on defense while the fire fight was calming. Two of our medics had died, I was sitting with 8hp left, and I had wanted to give them some uber right out the door. Gibus-Doc got hold of me first, a cutie he was. I took instant notice of the fast healing dished out as I was pocketed, I figured it was a quick-fix. I was surprised when it was a stock medi-gun. So yeah, I had a subconscious question of mine answered tonight while also watching some entertaining videos, rad. Thanks Array, for the videos.
Im Surprised how you took a little thing that all medics should know and turned it into a entertaining video even for people who already know about this!
I'm so glad you talked about buffing the sniper. No one ever does it, but in competitive, that can be crucial. Surviving the one headshot is absolutely amazing. Sending that enemy sniper to the respawn timer for 15 seconds will not only help your own survivability, but will keep others on your team alive as well.

As a counterargument, healing a freshly damaged patient also produces more Über as you're healing them longer without it being an overheal, thus building Über more rapidly. So in some situations it may still be more useful to heal without the "crit heals".
This is why I like your channel more than most, Its entertainment, but with actual facts and useful data, like stats and playstyles. Learn me some AND have fun with it.
I've been thinking of joining a Highlander team, and this is a Godsend. Thank you ArraySeven! I had a basic inkling about crit-healing, but this gave me the full rundown.
Thank you for making me conciously aware of this, I only noticed this as I've seen targets get healed for more that 24 points. I didn't think there was a term for it or mechanics!
Array, thanks for making a video on this, not enough people know about this. In pubs when there are 8 people about to die, they all yell at me for not healing them, but i was trying to wait a couple seconds so I could heal them all instantly (or much quicker regardless)
Crit heals are also really useful in 6s when you are at a stalemate and on offense after you have gotten a pick because you can buff your teammates much faster leading in a faster push and less of a chance of the dropped player respawning fast enough to aid in the end of the enemy team's defense, so if you are planning a push try to tell your teammates to take spam so you will in turn be able to buff them much faster and push much faster.
Array, I'm a tried-and-true anti-Lime-Scout. I NEVER ask the Medic to heal me. And yet, your videos are so interesting... I look at deep medic mechanics. Because of your commentary.
The post on the tf2 blog (from 2008!) says that the heal amount ramps up linearly. Meaning that it doesn't suddenly jump at 12.5 and 15 seconds, but it increases over time from 10 to 15. Knowing Valve, they might have just messed up and done it in increments instead. The tf2 team seems to not have this whole "creating software that's not broken" thing down.
Lovely video as ever Array. I knew of 'crit heals', but not the mentality of why medics would hold off when I'm about dead. Now I can rage less in pubs and when that lone medic in a sea of spies and snipers on my team looks like he knows what he's doing, I can properly thank him. :D
Speaking of crits, did you know if you're engineer and you're kritz'd or if a soldier uses a buff banner near you, your sentry will also deal critical (or mini-critical) damage.
Star just made a JFK joke on his newest vid. Array makes a JFK joke on his new vid... Conspiracy theorists it's all up to you now! Also they both said something in spanish in both vids .3.
Very interesting. I knew about crit heals, but I thought that self damage didn't count for the time since being damaged. Good to know, this will make me a slightly better pocket for my medic friend.
That explains why when I medic heals me, it seems to take a second, but when I heal others it seems to take FOREVER. I usually gtfo when my health gets low unless alone, but I am always on the front line healing half the team at once.
Thank you for making this. It's been cancerous calling for a med to heal me or other players cause they have crit heals and the med having no idea what crit heals are.
Insert pootis meme here They aren't really called anything, this is just what ArraySeven is calling them. It's just a mechanic that players that were hurt a while ago heal faster. The same applies to dispensers.
And to think I fancied myself as a decent Medic... the skill cap gets higher every time I look! :P I gotta remember this; 12.5, then 15. Thanks, Array! :D
I just noticed today in a match that the mediguns have crit heals. When I was healing a low health engi he was at 3 or 5 hp and I know the medigun didn't heal as fast as the quick fix, it went from 5 hp to full to 2-3 seconds like the quick fix. This surprised me and really made me think about crits. I know this is a BIT different then what Array is talking about, but it's still useful information.
Tip; In battle and fighting with your heavy but he is almost dead, and you only have something thats not quickfix? Heal with the medi, then quickly switch to Crossbow, shoot at him, then keep healing, and keep repeating.
I feel like they should put this in the medigun's tooltip for greater clarity, like how they added the crit mechanic to the description of the flare guns, or the reload mechanic to the crossbow and flare gun.
I'd say this is pretty much pointless. If someone gets damaged badly, they are VERY unlikely to survive for another 13 or 18 seconds. Even the 8 second respawn timer can seem like forever to some people. 13 is like a century and 18 is a millenium.
Everybody plays for themselves. But if you get lucky and find the one or two capable people, as a medic you're fine. + when anyone sees a friendly medic, they run to them for healing. Also as 32marmarmar said, if he doesn't heal them, they'll just run to a healthkit. At least what I'd do. (Then write in chat what a prick they are.) Fact is, that when I'm a medic and healing a heavy who's being shot at badly, I'm not going to change heal target to a soldier who just rocket jumped to me behind a corner where he should be relatively safe. Maybe after the heavy mows down some of them and it's a sure win for him I'll heal the soldier. But that's about it. The entire concept is totally pointless. I'd say it just rewards you for surviving a long journey to a medic. A journey you really DON'T have to take.
In practically, I've never been able to really take advantage of crit heals. It may have to do with the fact that I only play on pubs, but I only ever get that opportunity on two occasions: either my teammates are just coming out of spawn, or they're stop far away from the action that it doesn't matter if I'm getting crit heals or not. If anyone on my team is close to the action, odds are they're being a bit more reckless than usual because they know they have a medic backing them nearby. As it is most people are consistently taking peg damage if not losing limbs at a rate that negates any possibility of crit healing altogether. However, if my groups of patients were aware of this and actually patient enough to hang back for a bit, that would make my job much easier.

Everybody plays for themselves. But if you get lucky and find the one or two capable people, as a medic you're fine. + when anyone sees a friendly medic, they run to them for healing.
