They Got Fired for That? - Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

  • Yes I saw people fired from their jobs at the theme parks. Some of them were typical reasons. A couple... well, let's just say they weren't so typical. And some of the reasons now seem to be acceptable to do...
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...
Not only did I work in theme parks for 10 years, I've visited a whole lot of them as well. Here's some stories of great visits, not so great visits, favorites, reviews, and much more.

almost poetic that disney didn't want employees to have a phone but they push the guest to have to have experience their vacation through the phone.

It’s definitely an interesting dynamic now with phones. When worked for Hershey Entertainment in ‘09-‘12 my cell phone was in my locker. Since starting at Disney in ‘22, it’s on me for emergencies in the park only. This is because of working in locations where l might be the only one working or no other cast is around to assist with a critical situation.

When I worked for a park with a no filming on rides policy, during an employee night--where managers/supervisors run the rides; someone got fired for filming on the ride. The person was in the US on a seasonal work visa. They had to go back to Europe.

Firing them is definitely an overreaction but I am very confused why an employee would think the no filming rule didn’t apply to them

I stay at the Beach Club villas. Leaving MK. after the fireworks, I was tired, hot and standing up in the bus because my parents raised me to give my seat to a lady or somebody older. So I just walk to the back and sleep standing up. Apparently we had a new bus driver who didn't know the route and made a wrong turn. I saw it. He had to maneuver the bus through a very tight gate and ran the back wheels over the curb. It was humid, the windows were dripping with water and he did the best he could to get us to our stop. This woman lost her... mind. "What is he crazy? Who is he? What's the bus number? I'm reporting him!!!!" I got off the bus, looked her in the eye, and said some things I won't repeat. It was something like lady, he got us back to our resort, he doesn't know the route why don't you chill out and go relax? Are you perfect? (It wasn't that nice.) I am old and crotchety now, been going to WDW for decades and frankly, I don't tolerate these people abusing CMs.

Saw a coworker at the parks employee entrance, feet kicked up in the parking booth, headphones on playing games on his phone. Never saw him again the next week, something tells me management saw him like that too!

When I was in the military, the female grave-shift OIC and a male Airman (one rank above Airman Basic) steamed up the inside of her car many times out on X-Ray Row (very secluded "row" where the ammo bunker was located). Everyone knew about it and we just would chuckle. But then a female Sergeant found out and ratted on them. The Airman got reprimanded and she got essentially kicked out of the USAF. She was offered an honorable discharge to just leave OR if she refused to voluntarily leave, kicked out with a General Discharge. She took the former. Why was her punishment more than his? She was an officer and was supposed to know better. The female Sergeant was hated by everyone, her life was made Hell, and she soon requested transfer to another base, which was instantly approved and she was gone. The former OIC got herself a local civilian white collar job as a district manager for a fast food chain and she and the Airman got married. He didn't leave the service and eventually retired a Chief Master Sergeant and she became the CEO of a big corporation. Very happy couple.

As a former Custodial CP, I can say that we did use Smartphones for communication with our coordinators, managers, and fellow cast members. However, they were company issued and had to be picked up and dropped off at base at the beginning and end of every shift. We were allowed to use the timer function on those phones to count the “dwell time” on surfaces we needed to disinfect. Alongside this, we were allowed to use the translator app in a situation where we had a language barrier with a guest.
We were allowed to keep our personal smartphones on us, but we were never allowed to pull them out under almost any circumstance, except in the case that 911 needed to be called. Hope that provides you with a bit of insight from a recent cast member!

Honestly it's sad that your friend got termed unfairly like that. Wish he was more appreciated there and didn't get termed, for someone else's stupidity. Had a similar situation at work. A cocky youngster thought he knew how to do a job I'd been doing for years, better. Job was cleaning the fryer. He overflowed the floor with hot oil and he almost started a oil fire by not packing the lard correctly.

Yay I am glad you made this video I could relate to everything in this video. I unfortunately got fired from Disney forever for a reason that was not even a friable offense. I was bullied by other caste members bad when working there and but they didn’t get punished at all. There was this one guy in Disney who got fired who Ik because he cursed at the guest once but we were glad he was gone to because he harassed us at times too. One girl I worked with took her phone out on stage and I told her it’s not appropriate and unfortunately I was the one who got talked to about it for not minding my own business which was shocking Disney does not care. One dumb thing I remember my friend who I worked with almost got fired for was going to get a Christmas cookie during her break not in costume but got a hot chocolate to and that’s a no because they say it’s only for the guests at the party. Ps thanks for the music in the video it fits the video perfectly.

My daughter saw a number of people get away with things that should have caused their termination. Like photos backstage repeatedly! Using phones on stage. Seems some people get away with it and nothing happens.

  • @sabrinaf7456
    @sabrinaf7456 Місяць тому

Ps forgot to mention Disney now tells attraction caste members we are allowed to have phone in our pocket on silence in case of a guest emergency in the park. Example includes if there is no cord phone in the area we could get to in time. Another example is if it’s after hours and there are no maintenance vehicles on stage we are allowed to take pictures on stage after every guest leave for the night.

I don't think so?! I work hospitality, and my phone is nearby NOT for me to use it willy nilly, but for emergencies and documentation- if I have to go into a guest room and record damage, or building issues, out it comes- anything in 'defense of my job' :) As longa s Im not glued to it, ignoring the customer, and using it in an official capacity

Here is a thought on cellphones in the park when working what if your diabetic and you use something like dexcom when your sugar drops and goes to low your phone will let you know with an alert and have to run off stage to check the phone to see what your sugar level is ?

    • @eclipsehorse8693

cell phones aside, from what I hear about standards now for CM's I think Disney did away with 'the magic' awhile back. visible tattoos, long hair, multi colored hair, 'choose your own outfit combination...' it's an entirely new breed

Being an epileptic, they'd probably cut me a little slack for having it on me because I might need it to call 911 to get medical attention. There's no way for me to be sure until I apply to be a ride operator, but there's bound to be a labor law that gives them no choice. If there isn't, that's a problem.

If they broke character they would be fired pretty quick. I didn't see that happen though. they took it pretty seriously.
