- We all know that guests seem to forget their brains at theme parks. It's not any better when they meet the Disney characters. Some of the questions and comments we heard asked of the characters left us dumbfounded or laughing hysterically. And then there were the inappropriate ones...
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. I do remember the child in front of us for a character shoot with Pluto, said 'I love you Jupiter' then got corrected by his dad ' it's Pluto, your a couple of planets off'
I know a dog whose name is Jupiter because his first guardian thought that that was the name of the Jetson's dog

@the truth Well, he wasn't there. It was over in Storybook Circus where you can meet Daisy, Minnie, Goofy, and Donald. I am not sure if Minnie told him or not. I hope she realized it was our little secret. :D
I went to get my picture taken with Mulan in 2000, I went to put my arm around her for the pic (innocent intentions only), and Mushu pushed inbetween. At first I was disappointed until it was pointed out that he was doing what he would have done in the movie. Now knowing what they go through, I give props to the person playing Mushu for protecting who was playing Mulan.
you don't understand how saddend i am to hear of the lack of stripping chipmunks at the Disney parks
Probably the one interaction I saw that just left me stunned was I had just finished watching the small play in Enchanted Tales with Belle. I saw all the kids go up for their photos and getting their bookmarks from Belle and one little girl who was a performer in the play went back to just playing games on an iPhone. Her mom tried to take it away for the picture but the little girl refused and Belle didn't really do anything about it. So now this mom will forever have a photo of her little girl next to a beautiful princess while she has her faced shoved in an electronic device.
I tried to throw off Jasmine by telling her I didn't see Agrabah on a map. Lol. I was surprised how well she handled it
I can really relate to the part where you talked about the crass comments towards the princesses. I used to work security at a football stadium, and I was usually responsible for escorting the cheerleaders back to their cars at the end of games. The amount of men who would wait around and bother them and ask for their numbers and just say disgusting things really drove me nuts. I just wanted to haul off and smash their faces in, but I couldn’t. Thankfully they were always walled off and couldn’t get close to us, but just hearing the things they said sometimes really bothered me. I can totally understand why you wanted to smash some skulls whenever you witnessed it.
Chip - named for the chocolate chip nose
Dale - named for the gap between his teeth, it's known as a 'dale'
Dale also has sleepier eyes to show off his more lazy personality while Chip is more bright and awake as he is the leader of the two and more energetic.
Lol that was my aunt at the character breakfast at the grand californian. We had Pluto come over to our table and she gave him a hug from her seat and called him Goofy. It's hilarious because I have a picture progression of Pluto excited and then his realization of being called Goofy and running away from her but then coming back almost like saying "it's ok, happens all the time"😂so funny you brought that up at the end because I thought of that moment right when you talked about it. Poor pluto😢
Hey SirWillow I worked at Niagara Falls State Park for a while and the silliest guest question I have is this “What time do the Falls turn off at night” 🤣🤦♂️ I got this at least once a day
Your comment about someone saying that "they're here for a different character" reminds me of something I did when I was younger.
A local theme park had an area based on the Berenstain Bears books, complete with the Bears treehouse, the Spooky Old Tree, and other locales from the book series.
After the bears did an on-stage performance (a live action adaptation of one of their books), they came down to interact with the guests. Well, I looked around, but couldn't find Brother Bear. So I went to Mama Bear and asked her where Brother Bear was.
She covered her eyes and bowed her head, probably sad that I didn't go up to meet her, before pointing me in the right direction.
I was 16 or 17 and was at turtle talk with crush. I got picked to ask a question. Only thing I thought of was "do you eat meat?" The look on his face was priceless. I honestly had no idea if turtles omnivores or herbivores.
I showed my friend a picture of me and Pluto and she screamed “oh my gosh, Goofy!!” I gave her a crash course lesson on the difference between Goofy and Pluto, almost as good as you did
i could imagine the actors for the characters has some interesting stories about their guest interactions.
I made the Goofy/Pluto confusion one morning at Garden Grill. In my defense, the coffee hadn't really kicked in yet, and the characters were not there at the moment. The character handler was making sure we'd met everyone.
Storytime! When I was 12 years old, I did not recognize one of the characters. This was back in the day when the characters just wandered about on their own. But, since I was a smart cookie at 12, I did not go up and ask a stupid question. I went up with a smile and asked for an autograph. When he signed the autograph, I looked at it and then said, "Thank you, Mr. Smee!" and gave him a hug. I hadn't seen "Peter Pan" in a while, so hadn't recognized him.
Skip ahead 3 years. I am at the Park with a friend. As we are walking, we hear a chorus of children's voices asking "Who are you?" You can guess who it was. So I told my friend "Watch this." I went over and put out my arms for a hug while yelling "Mr. Smee!" The kids asked me who he was, and I happily explained it to them. Mr. Smee gave me so much love that day! Lots of hugs and kisses, and I enjoyed it immensely.
Sorry for the long story, but I wanted to share.
Great story. And a great way to handle not remembering a character's name!
What would be cool for Mulan, have her carry her sword in the scabbard on her waist. Then see how many people confuse her for a geshia. It'd just be awesome, regardless.
I think the park actually retired Mulan. Pocahontas too. I haven't seen either have a meet and greet since before Covid.

I wonder how many times anyone came up to Chip and Dale and asked which one was Alvin, which one was Simon and where was Theodore?
I myself have been tempted to ask them that on purpose just to see how they would respond. Of course I would then tell them I was just kidding!
But every chance I had I always chickened out at the last moment.

As a prior CM, The other unbelievably stupid question you hear alot: "What time is the 3 oclock parade?"
yes, but you don't normally hear that one being asked of the characters. I mention it though in a number of my other silly guest comments videos. :-)
Do one on smart character questions! My favorite thing to do with the characters is ask them about their friends, movies and family. For example, asking Goofy about Max, Donald about Panchito and Jose and Mickey about Oswald! They seem to love it! altho poor Mickey was caught off guard when I asked him about his long lost brother haha

A good one is to ask Pocahontas what her tattoo means. The crown-looking armband one. It isn't explained in any of the movies. Apparently it's not an upside down crown. According to pocahontas, the arches are a symbol for the Powhatan tribe. She didn't explain how. But apparently the more arches you have and the thicker the arm band, the higher your rank. Shes a cheifs daughter so hence.
Also, I thought I could throw her a curve ball, and ask "if you are Powhatan, how did you end up in Seminole country?" She answered with "we have had an alliance with the Seminole for years. Being a cheifs daughter you need to maintain political relations." If you know a bit about native American tribes you can have a pretty impressive conversation with Pocahontas. Unfortunately I think the park actually retired Pocahontas. I haven't seen her have a meet and greet since before covid
Very interesting and funny stories! I can’t believe that many people don’t know who a lot of the characters are...even ones the you would think EVERYBODY would know about (Mickey, Donald, Goofy, etc).
Aside from being rather inappropriate to ask a working character about the "air conditioner in their head" and "breaking the magic" by talking to the performer and not the character being performed, the concept itself isn't THAT far-fetched. Quite a few of those privately commissioned "Fursuit" characters at various conventions DO have some type of fan mounted in the head to improve ventilation and cooling. And other costumers sometimes wear "cool vests" and other cooling apparel to help with over-heating while wearing the costumes for extended periods.
Rather surprised that the park performers don't, actually. Especially in a hot and humid climate like Florida. Perhaps they don't spend as many minutes in the costumes at one time. Or maybe they just "tough it out".
I had to have a translator in Hollywood studios for BB8......I dont speak Droid. 😂 also, Jack Sparrow loved my pirate joke.
I also heard someone ask Captain Phasma why the white paint on her armor fell off BECAUSE SHE'S CHROME ON PURPOSE!!
I was one of those people too. I mistook Chip and Dale my first time. At least I learned. ^^
5:27 - 3rd off, the characters they portray are minors in their movies
You just reminded me of when I went to Disney world, our first real day at Disney world we went to Hollywood studios and Donald was the first character we met he looked at our lanyards and noticed we had mickey pins and not Donald pins and he wasnt pleased 😂😂😂 I told him he was my favorite and we made sure to get Donald pins after 😊 a wonderful memory and so hilarious

When I met Tinker Bell, I had a green MagicBand with purple stickers covering most of it, except for the Mickey head. This was before the time when you could get a purple MagicBand for free before your trip, so I improvised. Tink saw my band and said, “Green AND purple? You must be a really fast tinker!” because apparently fast fairies wear purple and tinkering fairies wear green, hence Tink’s name. I thought that was pretty neat; she must make comments about all sorts of colors the guests wear!
I remember I was in line meeting cruella de vil and a family was in front of me the dad was like okay everyone say cheese and cruella’s response was cheese? Where I don’t see any cheese 😂
That cracked me up then it was my turn I told her she was favorite and then she looks at my pen if I’m your favorite then why is tinker bell on your pen? Oh I felt like an idiot
One day at Epcot, managed to get into the character spot during a time when it wasn't too terribly busy, so I was able to spend a little bit of extra time with each of the characters. When I got to Goofy, I talked with him for a few minutes, then started to pose for pictures. Well, apparently, I didn't hear the attendant say that there was no photopass photographer for Goofy. I had a good laugh at my flub, and handed my phone to the attendant lol.
I did the same thing with Tiana at Disneyland. Went up to her when I was next in line and ended up posing for nobody in particular when I realized my dad wasnt taking pictures with his phone nor was there a photographer present.LOL!
I'm a big Pluto fan, and typically if other characters are also with Pluto, they tend to know I am waiting for him! However, one time I was waiting in line for Pluto and Goofy was also there. I asked Goofy if it was okay if I took a picture alone with Pluto. He was a good sport, but wanted to photo bomb a little bit!
Face characters would have to be incredibly quick on their feet. I imagine that big fans would on occasion, ask real 'head scratcher' questions that would require some creativity.
I don't really think I could be a character that didn't have my face covered or be their handler because I get this kind of "really?" Look. I just can't hide the fact I think they are just plain stupid.
My oldest son and nephew “flirting” with the saloon girls at SDC. They were 2 and 3 at the time, so the girls thought they were adorable.
I don’t have a story, but I do wonder how certain characters or employees respond to questions like “Why is a character like Pluto, Scooby-Doo, etc. standing on two legs?” or how SpongeBob characters are able to walk around on land without the helmets they wear in Sandy’s airdome.
Though to be fair, I can sort of get the question for thinking Alice was just Belle with dyed hair. Their casual dresses have the same color scheme. Still pretty ridiculous, but it has more leverage than plenty of the others here.
That's why when I go to Disney, I'm curstying to all of them and talking to them like normal people.
Well I have two things. Back during the 60th in Dland I chased down 2 stormies for a pic (New Hope types) to get a pic, my wife was wondering what I was doing. I said I wanted a pic with them. She stated we know alot of stormies (501st one as were are in a Star Wars costume club) back home, I stated but they are no Disney Stormies. 2nd was we went down to Dland for our Bdays (they are 2 days apart) the weather was nasty that week, 102 deg with 54-58% humidity, we went into launch bay to cool off. We saw the Character lines really low, so we started with Kylo (in the local Star Wars clubs we all joke the Kylo is the 1st Disney Star Wars princess using Maui criteria for a princess 1. Skirt and and animal side kick (hux is a weasel). So as I am in line I squeal like a fan girl I get to meet Kylo a Disney princess, the cast member got really upset to the point getting in my face (we let guest services know this was uncalled for). But what made the day was we went to take pics with Chewie. We both were wear out "Anti-Jedi, Sith Club shirt" Chewie came over and looked at us and moved his hand up and down to say as "Whats with the Sith stuff" I am not usually caught without a snarky line, but I was then. So my loving nerdy wife said "Darkside is more fun" to this he made the gesture of his mind exploding (he made that day and we let guest service know that).

little bit random story out 2009. i was 11 and in disneyland paris, did not speak english other than hello and bye. so every meeting whit a caracter was a little limit. but to my suprise there where 2 photo lines. one for remi from rattatie( the rat who becames a chef) and donald. for remi a really big line. by donald was nobody. i was like, hello. there is donald, like from the comics , the tv shows, movies and more. remi is only in one movie. why not take a picture whit donald? but i did not mind. no line for me. also later i found out that donald is like only this popular in the netherlands. everyome loves donald here. he is here more popular than mickey and have his own weekly comic book.(maybe other countrys have this to. but not that i know of)
I am from Sweden and I got the impression that some of the characters are way more well known here than they are internationally since we have more comic books with them and such. But I would imagine that everyone would know who Donald Duck is by now. Johan.

I was a mascot for a hockey team and would constantly get asked if I was the pirate... Big green parrot and they would confuse me for the other Mascot.

Good thing you didn't have me lol. I have gone to Fancy Nancy and ranted about why she used two authors for her recent her books, and could go back to one so it would be easier to shelve the books. It was a rainy day and the line was pretty short. I have also proposed Minnie in front of Mickey or even Donald for Daisy.

If I'd ever meet Maleficent at Disneyland, I'd be tempted to call her Queen Grimhilde, since I've gotten the impression Queen Grimhilde gets called Maleficent a lot by guests, from the UA-cam videos I've seen.
Most of the time Queen Grimhilde was called the Snow Queen, Evil Queen or Wicked Queen. Or even just Your Magesty. I don't think most people know what her real name is.

In all seriousness though, my dad is the same way, maybe not on scale, but he knows the main fab 5, but there are some characters he has no idea about…poor stitch…just never even thought about till he saw him on my cruise
Its makes my dumb questions looks brilliant. I mean - Misstaken identity or forgotten last names (happen me when I meet Sigge Lauchpad McDuck in AK. I titaly remembered his swedish name but lost his last name despite it being written in large letters over him. Yea overcocked brain, thank you.) Same thing when tried to recall if the Chesire cat was in Alices universe or not. Id had to ask her. But I guess that the characters are well trained to answer dumb questions like that.
And one thing I learned after meeting Aladdin and Jasmine on my first day was ton never ask them anything related to theyre CMs in any capacity. (I asked them if they could sign theyre autographs with theyre ”friends” (CMs) names as well cause that how I like to have my autographs from musical actors - I love to recognize them actors as much as the characters. But it did not fly the way I thought.
It was not a dumb question but when I meet Rey in Batu she asked me were I was from and I automatically answered Sweden without thinking that I was in another galaxy. But I quickly thought out that that planet was close to Hoth (whom was filmed in Norway) and went on to a discussion about the climate in places like Batu, Jakku and Tantoniee instead. Talking about adapting on the fly. I can imagine that her CM had fun knowing everything about Sweden behind her character mask.
Makes me wonder how much the character CMs train on answering ”dumb” questions in character and what they are required to know about geography apart from what theyre stories tell? Will Anna and Elsa know that Arendylle are supposed to be in Norway and thus close to Sweden? (Or are theyre CMs even from Norway? They meet us in the Norway pavillion afterall and the rest of the pavillions CMs are from respective country. Johan.
They do get some training on how to answer "dumb" questions, as well as questions that go outside of what they are supposed to know and comment on. And you learned that on stage, they are Aladdin and Jasmine. Their friends are the Genie and the attendant and photographer. They don't have other personalities or anything like that as they don't exist outside of their world. :-)
It's also company policy that you are not supposed to give any information to guests about your out of the park real life unless you know them already for safety reasons among others. There are times it gets known, but it's not supposed to happen.
@@SirWillow How much are they required/expected to learn about stuff like geography and theyre names on different languages? Given the international crowd (and I thought that was the reason for some characters getting more covering clothes - Not that people where rude.) of WDW I can imagine that many international guests come and call them the names they are used from in theyre country and having conversations on how close theyre countries are to wherever the characters are from - Like when I meet Anna and Elsa and talked about how close Arendylle where supposed to be to Sweden. Given how worldwide the characters are from I can imagine that some might get conversations on "local" topics like that - Or maybe even starting to conversate characters on theyre "own" laungage -Brings me to another question: Are the characters required/expected to learn anything of theyre "own" launguage? Aka does Gaston knows a bit of france and Snowwhite some german? Johan.

Earlier this year (before the lockdown), I met Scrooge McDuck at Animal Kingdom and asked him what part of Ireland he was from. He was so mad. XD And then my friend who was with me said "Come on, he's clearly Welsh!" Of course, I assured him afterwards that I knew he was Scottish.

Its a dumb question to ask the characters but I can understand where the question comes from from a acting and CM standpoint. I would never ask questions like that but part of me are qurious about if the characters CMs are always the same genders as theyre characters or not. Some characters are of the kind where it either does not matter or is easier for the oposite gender to portray him or her - Like when a tiny female has an advantage in portraying a tiny character over most males. Oh I just thought of this there's a neck collar that actually blows cold I guess they could have air conditioning in there head but it's expensive.

I had a funny experience with BB-8 in DHS at Launch Bay was funny maybe came to cosy with him he beeped a lot and the cast members were funny saying he kinda rant on me, jangled nagged on me was funny talked with him could have said that I am BB-10 :=) his upgraded Version (lol).
I'm a girl and I had a crush on the Genie from Aladdin once. I wanted to flirt with the Genie at the Disney parks before, but I never got the chance. And now I'm scared of genies so I don't like Genie anymore. So i dont have a crush on Genie anymore for that reason and because he's not real.
Being a theme park veteran I can always spot an employee that I’m fairly sure I can chat up.
At toon town in Disneyland at that little info booth I had a good half hour conversation with that guy while the family made their way around toon town. Conversation about the what the charterers go thru came up. He told me that it’s not an easy job and gusts who mess with them have no idea who is under that fur. I guess one of the guys who wears the goofy costume because he fit the high requirement was a combat marine vet who has an incredibly high tolerance for stupid people.
Then we shot the shit about cars for a bit. Love talking to park employees. I know when I would spend two hours standing in front of log jammer telling people the ride was down I appreciated the conversational guest.

The only thing that I would ever do with the Princesses, is give them a big cuddle. Is that allowed? The only female characters that I don't hug are Lady Tremain, Drizella, Cruella De Vil and the evil Queen. Is that reasonable?

Ione thing bugs me but I never mention it in frozen 2 the horse spirit is name nock...um no nock is a woman that can turn to a horse....a kelpie is a water horse siren...and when elsa character says her horse nock in the parks I just cringe lol

Not everybody is into Disney so the fact they didn't know the characters doesn't surprise me. Iv'e been to Disney but had to be dragged there. The Disney franchise just never interested me.

I dont know why they couldn't put fans in the heads.. look at furries and how they make their fursuits and have fans or even camelbacks to keep hydrated.
weight. noise. safety. There are a lot of reasons they don't want them in the character heads. They aren't going to want anything that is going to make that character look less "real" and camelbacks and fan noise will both do that.
In all my years on this earth, this was the first time I ever learned that Chip and Dale have different noses.

It was pretty easy to spot someone doing it on purpose and those that didn't have a clue. There are reasons we joked that the finger scanners sucked their brains out, because these people were serious.
