i remember when they were filming this. i was in fifth grade and thought this was the greatest thing on earth. the hardware store in the trailer is gone now, it was a bagel place, now it's a sushi joint that's never open. the tuscan dairy where they filmed the trust scene by the L-train on hoffman is gone, it's a bottled gas place now. and the shanty town in the lot next to it burned down in 95, now that's a waldbaums. i haven't seen the movie in years, so i don't remember which bar they used.
@@mikelisteral7863 Not my thing. I enjoyed it but I don't like senseless, pointless violence, which that movie has a lot of. Trust has more character development, depth, hilarious dialogue/quotes... and just more heart.
My former lover of 5yrs showed me this amazing film about 15yrs ago. We owned it on VHS tape 📼 . They were an artist and sketched out a cool portrait of Matthew with the grenade and it hung on our wall through the duration of our relationship. This film holds a special place in my heart.
Same here. It's coming up on its 30th anniversary in 2020. Hope Hal Hartley does a special release to celebrate it and Adrienne Shelly who would've turned 53 yesterday.
I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since I 1st saw this movie. I love it as much now as I did then... maybe even more. Thanks, Hal Hartley & thanks to the poster.
This is honestly one of the movies that is so imperfectly beautiful. It does not have a happy ending, nor does it have a creepy romance between a teen and a middle aged man. She looked upto him more as a father figure. And Maria definitely brought out something in Matthew. Something that made him feel more alive and purposeful. They both had short term encounters with each other but at the end , they helped and changed each other in so many ways. Maria realized she doesn't need to marry or be with a man to live her life and Matthew finally let go of his wretchedness. People come and go in our lives...and without even realizing, their presence can be so tremendously impactful. Loved this movie. Will always keep this close to my heart.
Middle Aged? Martin O'Donovan was 32 when he made this movie. Adrienne Shelley was 23. Her character was 17 so I am going to think Matthew was probably supposed to be in his late 20s.
I caught this movie on cable when I was around 15. From start to finish and I loved it! Fast forward 15 years later and I can't remember jack about this movie but I can still picture their faces and I remember the line "television is the opiate of the masses" I have been searching for YEARS with this little information and not knowing Martin Donovans name this whole time. Finally I saw the movie Come to Daddy last night and got his name and finally found the name of this movie he did so long ago! Idgaf if this story is pointless, I want to scream my happiness that I have finally found this movie after literally half of my life searching!! Lmao
@charliesteele170 It's" Walk Away" by Hub Moore and the Great Outdoors. It's on the "Possible Music" Hal Hartley compilation album. You can buy it as an mp3 or just listen on Hal H's Myspace page.
the scene in which Adrienne informs her h.s. boyfriend she's pregnant, his reaction is so fucking funny... Adrienne was so so good in this and the Unbelievable Truth.
Still one of my favorite movies. Why is this never played on TV? You can't watch this movie and not fall in love with Adrienne Shelley. Martin Donovan was perfect. The thing about these independent movies is the camera stops and cuts at the moments you are invited to think about what happened in the movie. Without revealing the ending, Adrienne Shelley finally wins Martin Donovan's trust. This is probably in the top five of my favorite independent films. Hal job.Hartley did a magnificent. It's hard to believe that this movie on a low budget did not cover it's costs.
@@asifakash8461 Welcome to the Dollhouse, Waking Life, Napolean Dynamite and Jojo Rabbit (Even though it waa released by a major studio, it feels like an independent film. It even has a pregnant pause near the end.) There are other films like this that I really like and cannot remember them offhand. They will come back to me.
I never noticed until watching this trailer, but the person who Matthew bumps into when he quits the TV repair job causing her to drop the TV, that's the same nurse who is on duty when Maria gets her abortion. I have no idea what that means but I'm sure it means something.
It's apart of the soundtrack score composed for the movie. "Trust" by Phillip Reed. Not sure if the soundtrack is available though. You might have to dig a little. But I found the video of the track on youtube (Phillip Reed - Trust)

I actually think it's a very happy ending. Everything in the shot I feel she wins it's telling her to go as she gets the green light to be free
