I think the one scene where Guts held a tortured Griffith while crying was one of the very few scenes in any medium where I was sobbing, because of how many emotions flowed through me. Berserk is truly the most resonant anime I've ever experienced along with End of Evangelion and Clannad.

I find stories with relatable characters to be much more interesting, just take Shinji for example he isn't the hero that we want to be but he's who we are or rather what we wish to leave behind and that hits hard

    • @nickwhright5848
      @nickwhright5848 5 років тому +1

Shinji is a broken man just living to be needed and has no will to live otherwise. So he is an example of someone you shouldn't become like mostly every character of evangelion. He is somebody that I was too but since I'm searching for my sense in life I have no reason to abandon the enjoyment of it and I say also. Pain is needed even in paradise to see what is good and appreciate it. Without darkness there can be no light to hide it and give happiness in this cruel world.

I'm a sucker for good world-building. Give me a living breathing world with depth and history with different parts making a bigger richer whole. After all, the characters need a place to be and a story a place to happen. Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC are all good examples. It may be because I study history and love to dig into lore even of franchises and series I will probably never watch or read.

Ahh Berserk. One of the few shows that changed my life and made me feel like I'm free and I'm independent. Griffith's speech about dreams took me in and in fact I've made my own sacrifices for my goals. But I never felt better, knowing that I'm actually doing something for my goals not just waiting for them to come themselves.

I just found this channel and definitely like how you reflect on various anime/manga. Monster undoubtedly resonates with me the most, as it has left me involuntarily drifting toward its events weeks after fully watching/reading it. There are other manga/anime that have produced a similar effect, but not quite like Monster. It has realistic people, expectations, physical abilities, politics, motives and emotions, all of which propel everlasting philosophical questions. Monster's characters have very human limitations and no superpower that distances them from the reality we reside in. This has led me to consider what they would do in certain situations and has helped me deepen my own philosophical faculties. It is truly special when a story forces you to think about your life in regards to its events.

What shows resonated with me ? Definitely FMA : brotherhood (and its sibling). The childlike sense of wonder Ed and Al showed toward trying to understand their own world using alchemy made me choose a STEM field career. Now that I say this, I can't believe young me just got into aerospace engineering because of an anime. The other thing about this anime that resonated with me was it's truly uplifting existentialism, the 2 brothers were always looking for a sense of purpose throughout the show and it really inspired me to find meaning through ambitious and/or fascinating projects.
Anyone else thought brotherhood was this amazing and uplifting even through it's harsh moral dilemmas ?

The monster is a master piece, the thing i most like about it is that it not only discusses the feeling of rage, anger, depression, sadness and sarrow, but it discusses feelings like love, happiness, the feeling you get when you eat good food, human beings need to feel them. It really tells you that good and evil will always exist.

The shows that resonate with me the most are K-On and Cowboy Bebop. While they are completely different I got similar feelings from them. I just felt sad at the end. K-On showed me true friendship and made me rethink most of my own, and it all felt so real that most of the time the girls were just messing around like friends do. And then Cowboy Bebop resonated with me through the similar thing that the crew were just doing bounty hunts most of the time, just living their lives. But how Spike and Jet had regrets in their pasts truly hit me as I watched it after going through a tough time and it made me look back on what happened differently. And even how the crew deals with sadness in Bebop is the most real thing I have ever seen. Both of these shows made me feel similar feelings but rethink life in a different way. Even rewatching those shows make me think about those aspects more, like rewatching K-On atm is making me feel more optimistic and motivated.
That’s why I defend these shows so much, even for all the shit I get for liking K-On.
These shows may resonate with me the most but my favourite is still JoJo tho lol.

Mentioning both, Cowboy Bebop and Berserk in one video? You have my attention. ♥ Great video by the way, I couldn't agree more with what you pointed out. As for "profundity": that's exactly why I love Inoue Takehiko's "Vagabond" so much, not only has it an utterly beautiful art style, but it's one of the most philosophical Manga I ever read. Although my interest in reading Manga has diminished during the past ten years or so, I keep going back to Vagabond and Berserk. I only wish both series would finally continue :'D

So, Berserk and Cowboy Bebop resonated with me in a way or another, also Star Wars in some ways.
But it was because in some ways, i could see what a human longs for, even if it doesn´t says it directly.

For me Monster related with Johan more than Doctor Kenma for the absurdity of human nature to love one another yet kill each other to invoke fear is something embedded in is all. Knowing the complexity of human nature makes us realize how beautiful it is trudge on the hope of others. To shattered their glass house of emotion. This makes me realize how easy we are convinced that what we do is for others good.Yet remain virtually unhinged to the reality of the world. I understand Johan much better at this level to be different from the world to feel nothing at all . Yet wear a mask to fit in so they don't get threaten of their so called peace

    3. Evoke emotion - Death of Neil Dylandy; the tragedies related to the Celestial Being interventions
    4. Profundity - Ideals of Aeolia Schenberg; the contradictions of world peace through war; the sacrifices for the greater good

Omg. I love you. Your videos just started getting recommended and so far you've coveted shows I watched and misty of them I liked. I didn't dislike any of them, even if I couldn't follow (lain..I just watched it twice and am similar to her but I'm really not even sure what happened)
But monster is definitely an anime I really haven't seen anyone talk about except my roommate who showed it to me.
It was good, maybe not my favorite but top 10 for sure. But what really gets me is that no one really understandable why I named my male cat anna and his look alike johan.
My cat BMO went missing and as we were looking for him we were given a few strays who needed a home. The first would be johan. He came in small and scared but very aggressive. He wasn't bad to humans but he wanted to kill the dogs and really avoided being too far from me. But when he got scared he still attacked me. I joked about him being evil. But my aunt already had a cat named kira do I didn't know what to call him. Except that we just watched monster so I nicknamed him johan instead.
A few weeks later on the other side of town we were given a second cat. My roommate brought him in and I laughed that johan isn't new, but then johan walked in. They have slight differences, but even the vet has issues. They look like twins to an absurd degree. So at that moment the name johan became permanent, and his twin had to be anna.
And I really can't explain why to anyone who wasn't there so it's a weird inside joke.
(We have a semi rule that any pets we get will have "fandom" related names. We've had/have chewie, bowser, starfire, bmo, Johan, anna, gir, and buttercup)

I forgot to mention the effect anna had on johan. Once we got anna, he walked right up to johan. They were really happy and johan became calmer and nicer and far less scared.
I've even seen them give the other some treats if one runs out first or hasn't gotten any yet. It really blew my mind how different johan is with and without anna around.

I relate to Sato from NHK an ugly amount. While he delves deeper into the rabbit hole and does disgusting things, I still root for him. Not because I’m exactly like that, but it’s so disheartening to see the downfall of a character you relate to. You want them to succeed, to get better. He still has his humanity, but his mind is not in the right place.

My animes: Trigun, Berserk, Fate stay night and Yu Yu Hakusho.
Trigun - had most impact over the years for me because it poses the main question - how you are going to react over pressure - are you going to become a savage primal human which is absent of basic human emotions like empathy and happiness in really harsh post apocaliptic environement or you are going to strive to preserve the good in yourself.
The irony is that the setting of Trigun is close to the situation right now in the world - the corona virus is something like a test for our humanity. Are you going to close your door for your friends, are you going to suspect your neighbor because maybe he is deceased... are you going to allow your anger to consume you because some basic human moral principles are trashed on the streets ?

Tsuki ga Kirei fits all of those (except maybe profundity, but that's a show about first love and school romance after all)
It resonated with me on a visceral level, I litteraly broke down at the end of this anime...
I've read/watched stories that were objectively better than Tsuki ga Kirei, more interesting, more meaningful, but none resonated with me in such a way, that's why it's my favourite anime.

Tokyo ghoul is a series that resonates with me because of how big a topic gray morality is with in the tokyo ghoul world. I am hoping you will one day make a tokyo ghoul video (hopefully based off the manga not the anime)

The show that resonates with me the VERY MOST is Fairy Tail because I am trying to build a family of friends like that. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the philosophy of the character Veno in Baccano, he's pretty specific and I wonder if he relates to anything in philosophical texts.

All of the points for starting this off with Ping Pong.

Ping Pong. I have been a competitor my whole life, and I have a burning passion for competition that drives me to surround myself with it. Though I can no longer compete at the level I want to for a multitude of reasons, I look back at the time I spent entrenched in it and feel not only happiness and nostalgia, but intense regret. And I'm working my way through what I believe will be my own tale relative to the characters in Ping Pong. It's both exciting and nauseating, as it should be.
I'd be interested in a more controversial take on what makes a story resonate. I understand that perception and perspective are two filters that everyone has and as such everything we consume - including stories - is passed through them, so it's difficult to objectively say what will and will not resonate with viewers. That seems impossible to answer directly. But what if you could say something larger about what makes some of your favorite shows "successful", or perhaps "good" and what makes something "bad" in comparison.
I'm a big fan of your work! But I'm curious about what your perspectives really are in relation to the overarching concepts you make videos about. I think my favorite part of this video in particular is your minute break down of anger, and I'd love to hear more of your voice not only sprinkled in other videos but as video topics on the whole.
Lastly, thanks for inspiring me to create. I hope to achieve this level of analysis and understanding in my own work!

Over the years I slowly drifted away from the shounen genre in favor of Manga on the level, or at least near the level, of Berserk, like Vinland Saga and Vagabond (the last one is also really relevant when it comes to absolutely infuriating update schedules). But one shounen always stuck with me and that was (and is) One Piece. And while I am fully willing to accept that for a long time, not much else was keeping me besides nostalgia (having grown up with the anime and later on the manga) I realized recently, probably due to reading more contemplative stories in the same medium and reflecting on why I even liked it, that certain themes have greatly influenced my outlook on life (for example the idea that your dreams and ambitions are something only oneself should be allowed to disregard and that nobody else has the right nor the knowledge to infringe on that) and as far as I am concerned and the story has, despite its enormous length, kept up with those ideas and is slowly drifting from something nostalgic into something mythical in my conciousness, which could only have been achieved by the enormous dedication that Eiichiro Oda has towards his story.

Some day I wanna make video games that resonate with people the way that anime and manga do. I don't think the medium has been fully realized as a story telling thingie yet. Even some of the great stories in video games just feel kinda hollow.

I just binge watched all of your episodes and they are great! I love the philosophical perspective you bring to the metanarratives in these shows. It is funny how you can feel something but can't explain it without the proper lexicon or philosophical framing. You are very well spoken and your voice is very nice to listen to. So keep it up! #subscribed
In this video you mention a love letter to Berserk Video, but I can't seem to find it? Did it get flagged and removed or something?
