The dropeye is actually not caused by activity on the bottom. It is caused by your tank lights, the light can irritate the arowana's eyes, causing it to drop to protect it from the bright lights and sometimes you need to cut down their food because the fat will build up behind the eye causing pop eye.

Based on my experience, drop eye is not caused by the fish looking down a lot of times in an aquarium environment. Drop she is caused by eating too much food that are high in fat. I used to own a silver arowana in Vegas for 10 years before I gave it to a friend of mine. But during my care beginning when I bought it as a small fry, I trained it to eat just flakes and pellets. It might be hard at first so I had to starve it for a week but eventually they will eat it. I NEVER feed it with krill, mealworms, crickets, shrimp, or anything live such as guppies or feeder fish because of several reasons: 1) arowana do grow rapidly regardless of what they eat...stick with the basics..flakes and pellets are fine 2)live food cause water to accumulate ammonia because they get dirty, 3)live food could injure them during feeding because they have to chase it all over the aquarium thus injuring themselves from the glass and decor, 4)you are teaching them to be aggressive among other fish. Best if you buy them when they are all young(2 or 3) so they can be tank buddies for a very long time. Like I said, I had mine for 10 years and it never had drop eye.
10 real life experiences that you have proven that Peacocks, and haps can be kept with Mbuna. Great info on the Arowana. I had 2 black arowana and they were a handful. Lol. I first saw this breed of fish in a tank in a bar and they fed that guy live fish and let me tell you it was exciting. He was a small guy but voracious. Arowana: Hi! Welcome to the tank! Kick back and relax, your totally safe here! New Guy: Oh good! I was worried about that..... Arowana: Nom Nom Nom Burp.. New Guy: .....................
Think of having a "drop eye" as a random genetic occurrence in all Arowana. An individual in the wild with a pair of dropped eyes would be like a *severely* handicapped fish that's unable to hunt food like a normal one on the top layer so, unless they can manage to scrounge enough food to live off the bottom (competing with natural bottom feeders) that individual won't live long enough to mate successfully and its genes will die out. If an arowana has a *single* drop eye then it will have impaired binocular vision for top feeding but can still manage to top feed enough to live. Plus, that fish may use the dropped eye to supplement itself by doing some bottom feeding if it's lucky. So single drop eye is a slighter handicap. Evolution would generally keep down the drop eye genetics in a wild situation but, in a hobby situation with feeding provided to each and every fish regardless, the drop eye trait is now being artificially propped up in the gene pool so it has become a "thing" in the pet trade. The aquarium environment is playing a role but not the way you may think. It's not acting so much on an individual fish in its lifestyle but on the entire arowana gene pool by interrupting the natural selection pressure *against* having a handicap. Nature would keep the trait rare but hobby-raised fish get fed by their owners so the drop eye trait is flourishing in captive fish. That's my two cents anyway.
I just got my first silver named DaVinci . 8 inches long as this point. Kids love it cus it looks teal and has pink on its fins. Its very calming just watching him float around and investigate his tank. Only tank I can have live plants in cus the cichlids just don't allow them in theirs lol.
I suspect covered tanks contribute to drop eye as well. Theres little that they can see to keep them interested in looking up. Since a cover is mandatory, the cycle continues.
The reason u gave fr tht drop eye is very correct, but I suggest to keep only arrowanas n no other fishes so there will be minimal chances fr them to look down , n even cover the surface with sand so there will no reflection of anything on the surface n not even there owns

Hello. I just ordered some Chinese food and while waiting I sat next to a tank with three full-grown Silver Arowanas inside. I fell in love with them, totally. I felt quite sad watching these beautiful two-feet long fish try to swim around each other, back and forth in a way-too-small tank. It broke my heart. After I asked what kind if fish they were I told the woman the tank was way too small for them. She said something and gestured at the space they were in and intimated she didn't have enough room for a bigger tank. It's full-on fish abuse in my opinion. These beauties need help. I thought of offering to buy them from her and investing in a proper set-up for them. To their credit, the tank was clean and the fish seemed healthy. I began researching what I'd need to rescue these guys. I don't know how big a tank is needed for these three large fish. Plus I live in a small studio. But I thought of donating to the school I work at. I am so troubled from watching these awesome fish try to swim in a place where they have to turn around almost immediately to avoid either end of the tank. Are there any fish rescue places near Seattle, WA? Maybe I should let this go, but it seems so wrong. I watched this video and dreamt of rescuing the fish. Please reply with any ideas or help you can offer.

With regards to the drop eye situation, is it or is it not advisable to have substrate with plants & stuff on the bottom of the tank? Thanks in advance guys 😌! I’m setting up my arowana tank so I want to get everything right before anything
You mentioned you do not have substrate and are thinking about doing it. I feel exactly the same way. I also feel adding substrate helps with some of the nitrogen cycle. but everyone I have talked to says not to do it at all. At the same token I have seen so many with it. It kinda leaves me confused. I am also told not to have any decorations like the drift wood you have, because during feeding they can harm themselves, and yet I see so many that have it. I did not see you touch on that and am curious to your thoughts.
So interesting to learn the male carries the eggs and fry, and that arowana have teeth in their tongues. Now I have 2 more cool facts about arowanas. 👍💕👍

@@KGTropicals why not get like a pond that is big and try to breed arowanas?
Thanks im excited planning get some Saturday to mix w my 3 blood parrot
my uncle has a silver in his 600 gal tank he says its 2ft long now and he feeds it lizards sometimes
Not sure it’s a 10 Things topic but like others said there is so much conflicting information on feeding. How often and how much? How do you know you’re doing it right by your fish?
Missed this series. Hope to see more!
Fantastic video you two. This is my DREAM fish. I really do want one. I keep trying to talk sense to myself though. lol

With regards to the drop eye situation, is it or is it not advisable to have substrate with plants & stuff on the bottom of the tank? Thanks in advance guys 😌! I’m setting up my arowana tank so I want to get everything right before anything
I owe my arowana with a redtail catfish and they’re a great combo
my rtc ate one of my silver aro
You mentioned you do not have substrate and are thinking about doing it. I feel exactly the same way. I also feel adding substrate helps with some of the nitrogen cycle. but everyone I have talked to says not to do it at all. At the same token I have seen so many with it. It kinda leaves me confused. I am also told not to have any decorations like the drift wood you have, because during feeding they can harm themselves, and yet I see so many that have it. I did not see you touch on that and am curious to your thoughts.
Asian Arowana are bred in farms nowadays. Wild ones are rare due to over-fishing in the 1990's.
So interesting to learn the male carries the eggs and fry, and that arowana have teeth in their tongues. Now I have 2 more cool facts about arowanas.
👍💕👍
Environment: Environmental circumstances have been attributed to cause droop eye in Arowanas. Among these circumstances are the reflection on the tank bottom and bright lights at the top of the tank.
There’s a video or 2 of blue and pink arowana at fish stores. Are they dyed?
It's my favorite fish ever I have a 125 for now.. he's about 10in. And his friend is a king Betta .. lol

Hello I am from Indonesia where there are lots of kinds dragon fish (arowana) especially super red but tbh Silver Brazil interests me more due to the size of it ( I am crazy about monster fish) and yes this "silver monkey" is awesome... Anyway nice video 🙏🙏
Cool video! I’ll probably never have monster fish. I’ll have to resign myself to live vicariously though UA-cam.

Arowana fish are my favourite, lobster then beta fish I want to buy one and have it at a public aquarium like sea life so I can see it 🤩 and then they will allow me to see it when I want to
I feel sorry for arowanas with drop eye. I mean I don't want to be stuck looking down all the time and I bet they don't either.
Get stingrays!! they'd look so cool!!
A few more severums would really balance the tank. What about Catfish?

10 Things to Know when starting a New World cichlid, community tank.
