my Oscar spits water at my husband every time he opens the tank. Bites him if he goes any further. He rubs up against me and lets me do whatever I need to do. His name is killer and he's 15 inches long and 11 years old. We measured him during our last water change.

One thing you should know about oscars is they are drama queen/king. They will sometimes act as if they are ill or sometimes dead.

LOL your cat is your wife? Lots of people are having pets instead of being involved in a relationship with one another. Where I live, most people have doggies, but don't socially engage with others keeping a distance. It's just so dangerous to get into a relationship you can't control. My computer is my significant other. lol

FishNerdVlogs knowing the conditions most of our fish are coming from for the aquarium trade, a lot more species are mistreated!
Especially fish that are still collected from the wild. It is up to people to inform themself before they start keeping fish.
If i see some youtube channels or facebookgroups, too many fish end up dead, mistreated, abused and even in the toilet 😔
But you are right > research is a must, but for every species 💪

He’s long since killed all his tank mates, so he’s just living in his own tank and he’s the most responsive fish I’ve ever had. He follows my finger around the glass of the tank and if I put my hand in he swims up and bumps me with his nose. He’s not afraid of me at all and actually comes out of hiding places to see me when I come near the tank

"Gentle giants." My mom was big into the fish hobby and she had a 75 gallon long aquarium with two MONSTER 11 inch oscars and a 14 inch long common pleco. All that you said is so true. She had one large focal point decorative rock and a few fake plants that the fish would throw about like they were playing with a beach ball lol. And one of them was so aggressive and territorial that if I got close enough to the glass he would get momentum and charge mouth open toward my face. Mom used to get a laugh out of watching this fish attack her daughter lol. I definitely inherited her love of fish keeping. I have 4 large comet goldfish and two large butterfly koi in an outdoor pond, a 29 gallon guppy/molly tank, a pea puffer nano setup, a 10 gallon betta sorority tank, and a five gallon blackwater betta tank. My next project is setting up a tank for axolotls and maybe I might jump back into keeping cichlids once I have the space.

I came home one day from a walk and my Oscar was on the living room floor. He busted a while out of his tank by head butting it. I don’t know how long he was on the floor but I put him back in the tank he was dead. I didn’t want to believe he was dead I left him in there for about an hour and he came back to life. That was a while ago he lived to 10 years old but he’s gone now

Hey great video! I agree 100%. Actually I have often thought some species of fish we keep should not be available in less than 50% of their natural size. Simply because they are so cute at two or three inches that people buy them for the wrong reason.
My first exposure to Cichlids was Tiger Oscars. A fellow I met was starting an aquarium shop back in the late 70's. He had a 280 gallon tank and a few Oscars who were so crazy! I had never seen anything like them. Thank you for making this, I hope everyone who wants Oscars will see this.
I would really like to see a few more species, but I know it is a lot of work to put them together.
One other thing in this crazy long winded comment. Many folks do not understand that nature is not mean, it just is. You are right we are mean but the cure for that is education, thanks again.

I used to have a 12 inch red oscar. I threw in some colored stones into his tank for decorations and the next morning I found them in a pile at one end of the tank. I spread them out again only to watch him pile them back up in the same spot. I let him have his pile after that. Also mine enjoyed swimming to the top and let me pet him. Awesome fish.

I would like to disagree with a couple of points.
    1. Oscars can get aggressive, it usually happens in phases.
    2. Keep them in large 125G or more tanks, the more space you provide the better.
    3. Keep them in even numbers or pairs, if you keep Odd numbers they do tend to single out on weaker ones. They will beat up the weak ones till they can stand their own or till they hurt them real bad.
    4. Oscars are Piscivores, contrary to what's being said in the video, they do enjoy hunting smaller fish like Guppies. I do not recommend that you feed them Guppies since sometimes feeder fish will carry pathogens unless they have been quarantined first. Oscars that feed on other fish do grow faster than the ones that are fed on pellets. They have a very strong prey drive and will chase and eat other smaller fish till they stuff themselves. That being said, its a cruel practice and also if an individual fish eats more than the others it grows faster and becomes more dominant. Ive noticed that oscars fed on feeder fish do tend to be more aggressive than ones that are exclusively fed on pellets and other feed.
    5. Oscars enjoy high concentrations of fish protein in their diets. They also eat shrimp, muscles, mealworms, crickets and earthworms with gusto. Feeding your oscar live feed occasionally is good idea, live feed contains all the natural goodness of minerals and other missing constituents that may be absent in your pellet feeds.
    6. I've owned many pairs of Oscars over the years and found that their personalities vary. Some Oscars are mellow fellows while others are just mean and will beat the snot out of their tankmates just because they can, so beware.
    7. doesn't matter what you feed and how good you feed, Oscars like to fight, they fight when they are stressed, they fight for territory, they fight for mates, and they fight just because it feels good, it comes in phases.
    8. Oscars are some of the hardiest fish that can survive ich, fungus, velvet and whole many other nasties. That being said, please do not neglect your fish, just because they are not as demanding as a discus.
    9. You can never over filter an Oscar tank.
Are they worth the time? Yes, yes and yes... If you are new to South American cichlids and have a large enough tank, you definitely should get your hands on a pair or two.

I agree with everything you just said for the most part, cept maybe the part about them fighting maybe....or at least in our experience that is... we've had at least a dozen, or maybe slightly more, Oscars over the years & I guess the only thing we'd be able to agree on regarding the fighting is the few times we happened to have odd #'s of them, just as u mentioned, in those circumstances, they would constantly try singling out the weakest of the bunch that is until we'd get another one so that they'd be in pairs again & after that they were immediately cool with one another again...for the most part pretty much all of ours have been extremely lazy & laid back fish....& to your point of how hardy & resilient these fish are that is no understatement we had 1 of ours get some sickness that I've never even seen before nor have I since then, I have an idea that it was from a batch of feeders that we got once that were contaminated, but our poor Oscar began to show more & more severe symptoms of what appeared to be a mixture of a variety of illnesses from ich clear to what almost looked like hole in the head even it was insane I cleaned out our old 1st tank a 10gl. & put brand new treated water in it & quarantined him from the rest & kept a close eye on him....i would have put every dime to my name that the poor guy was doomed but not even 2 days & he went from an Oscar that practically looked to be in the early stages of decomposition to looking healthier than he did when 1st purchased him! I was blown away & super pumped cuz at the time he was my largest & favorite Oscar so that was how we learned how truly tough these fish are... that & the fact that in the multiple years in which we've owned these types of fish, that incident was actually the ONLY 1 that has ever even come down with an illness & that's amazing considering that we've had many of their other tank mates get sick many different times yet the Oscars it doesn't ever even seem to effect them....All goes to show how amazing these fish are to own

I raised 3 oscars. Jupiter Io and Ganymede. I had those fish for almost ten years. They were huge before they passed. They were smart and somewhat trained. They ate one at a time. Biggest to smallest and had to do something before they ate. They were huge. Jupiter was as wide as a football. So big it had to be hand cleaned. Watching this on my feed has inspired me to raise another again. I still have the three hundred gallon inch thick tank. It was hard when they passed and fed them to the community cats and refused to take on another fish. Thanks for this video. I miss my fish.

Love Oscars! My parents bought Ike and Mike when the fish were about the size of a thumbnail. Ike and Mike grew to 12 inches and lived 15 years! Daily feedings were fish pellets, except Fridays....feeder fish Friday. :) My dad created a toy, a ping pong ball, a sinker, some fishing line, and silicone,..the fish LOVED batting that thing from one end of the aquarium to the other.

Oscars rock we've had many I love watching our 2 beasts (Jr.-tiger & Ably-Albino Tiger) tear into their feeder fish we feed ours a variety of food but they show you very obviously they prefer their feeders...just like she said when our Oscars see us get our net ready to dip out some feeders for them they LITTERLY start wagging their tails & I swear ours even smile....some may argue but I swear I can see ours when they smile... We own 2 tanks of fish, we have a miniature yorkie & a chinchilla & most of the time I'll tell you that my Oscars are my favorite.... just on the days when they're throwing a temper tantrum would I say my yorkie or chinchilla is my favorite lol... very informative video for new fish owners at least... we've been at it for several yrs though so just a fun watch for us! My oscar loves earthworms and I feed mine fruit (He likes grapes and mango) once a week as amazonian fish need Vit C (the lack of which, I believe, is why it is amazonian fish that are so susceptible to hole in the head) ..I keep mine with a severum and 5 silver dollars. Tank is 180 gallon. I found that chocolate cichlids also make good tank mates.

We had a couple of goldfish and an Oscar. When the goldfish died the oscar was pouting at the bottom of the tank. We got some silver dollars and he perked back up. Recently our oscar died, we think he ruptured his swim bladder. We were very sad, we loved him as much as our dogs. We had some convicts with him as well, we put them in as babies hoping he would eat them. Instead he took care of them, it was so cute. We plan on getting more oscars now that we have a larger tank. I just hope that the new one will be as loving and friendly as the one we lost.

I fed that Oscar almost anything that crawled, jumped, flew, buzzed or croaked on top of flakes and beef. He loved the morning time feeding and music. In fact he recognized me and would swim into my hand and sit, almost as if he was resting. Great fish and 35 yrs later I can still picture him dancing at the front of the tank waiting for meal time.

Thank you for helping to put that rumor to bed, sir!
I work at PetSmart and everyone that comes in assumes that fish only grow to the size of their tank. That is a complete joke, to assume that as a fact would imply that as long as a human wears child's clothing they will never grow up😂

    • @aquadraco20
      @aquadraco20 5 років тому +3

As a former petsmart employee- the "grow to the size of the tank" is partially true, but not for the right reasons. It's like if you kept a horse in a dog crate, it will only grow to the size of the crate and then die shortly after. It's called stunting, and its abuse. Dont look for reasons to lower the quality of your care. Every animal in your care is completely dependent on you, and it is your responsibility to provide the best possible care. If you cant, then you shouldn't have that animal. Simple as that.

I have a question! I have 2 Oscars I bought together that were swimming together. I was told in the pet shop this was really special. Anyway my question is why do they sometimes dig a hole in the gravel right down to the bottom of the glass? And then they seem to look at themselves and its hard to break their trance even with food. I clean the tank regularly every week. And the only thing that stops the madness is me cleaning the tank. And most of the time I get my husband to do it because they seem to think I look like food especially when they have dug their holes. They both do it on opposite sides of the tank. Thanks for your time and your UA-cam channel I've learned a lot and enjoy learning more.

Hey sir, I have been keeping fish for a while, but mostly smaller stuff. I decided it was time for a larger aquarium for myself, finally. So I upgraded to a modest 75 gallon. I'm running 2 Aqueon quiet flow 75s and a 250gph powerhead near the surface just for agitation and current. I've got a fairly open setup, one robust piece of decoration and a small corner one where the current seems to clear out my sand. I'm currently housing 1 oscar, 1 long tailed/fan tailed/really odd male convict cichlid, 1 striped raphael cat, 1 red tail shark (not cat), a bristle nose pleco, 3 pictus cats, and 3 tiger barbs, was 5..but they often "go missing". 1, am I over stocked with these guys at an adult size as they are growing fast, and 2, I got the 75 as I thought that was large enough for the oscar, now I'm hearing 90-100 gallons min. Did I make an error? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, really not trying to be a dick, but I see this way too much; people buy fish they have no knowledge of and shove them into the wrong conditions, expecting them to be fine, and when they're not they blame the fish for being "troublesome".

I had an Oscar (baby) in a ten, then 20, then 55gal tank. He was like a puppy when he grew up, like the size of a lapdog.. He got excited when we got home, and when we fed him. He liked to be petted. He used to pop the lid of his tank when he wanted food. It got to the point where we had to add weights (bricks) on the tank lid to avoid the constant slapping.
We got home from a football game and Oscar was half dead on the floor. We had forgot to use weights on Oscars tank, and he jumped out. We tried to revive him, but he died three days later. (the Vet wouldn't even treat him, and suggested freezing or submersing him in soda water, to euthanize him.)

There's nothing worse than waking up looking to see your your little tail wagging now big tail wagging happy to see you oscar laying on the floor in front of the tank. They jump. Didnt know then. Do now

Reverend Zombie They splash water....On purpose. I wanted to use natural sunlight for my tank but they splashed water everywhere! We have hardwood floors in our house and they see me cleaning up the water. So they learned to splash water on purpose to get my attention haha

See, I knew this was a thing. That's why I haven't gotten an Oscar. If it's a jumper I can't handle it in my life.

Yes they splash! Their like kids. But I am going to do another oscar for sure! The most personable fish ever! Them and green spotted puffers. They'll bite your finger. N have sharp beaks.

I once had an oscar that would jump to take food from my fingers, until he missed the tank. He never jumped again but would still let me pet him.

@@davejensen3890 lol, lucky enough to learn his lesson. I've known of another Oscar that jumped onto the floor heater and grilled itself.
