  • This week’s episode I'm joined by Kimberly McCullough. You may know Kimberly best as Robin Scorpio Drake on General Hospital, where we worked together for many years.
Seeing Kimberly again and talking General Hospital history brought up so many memories. She’s seen it all! These days she’s enjoying her life as a mother and being behind the scenes in the role of Director. Kimberly has most recently Directed an episode of Fantasy Island on FOX and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+.
For those interested in the scenes I mention between Kimberly and Steve Burton: • Jason and Robin Pt 2

I think that the AIDS storyline was the singular most pivotal, thought- provoking one in GH history. And it was so important for the time it was shown. To have been a part of that must have been incredible for both of you.

Well said, Julie! It did not work out for me, but that story made me want to write for soap operas. The near real time storytelling that is really only possible in soaps has the potential to be very powerful and meaningful, and the AIDS plot truly showcased that aspect of the medium. I think this is why we need soap operas. Narratives that last for years and even generations enable us to connect with, experience, and reflect upon our changing society in ways that shorter narrative formats cannot.

I want to go back and watch again lol. I started working during the day about 30 years ago, and never got a VCR to record. So I haven’t watched GH really since the 90’s. This show just popped up in my feed here on UA-cam and when I watched the episode with (the 2 parter) with JackieZ. And Kin Shriner. Turns out I’m only about 2 weeks behind lol, thank goodness the story lines take a really long time to unfold. 😂
I’m gonna have to see if I can find reruns and get up to speed.

I always loved the storyline of Robin and Jason. That’s when I saw Steve Burton really grow as an actor and take the character of Jason to new heights. That time with Sonny and Carly and the Qs was an amazing time in the history of GH. Glad to hear Steve is no longer a jerk. I enjoy knowing he had and has a good relationship with Maurice and others. The Claire Lanine era was the BEST writing ever on GH. RIP The Glory days. Never will it be that good again. The whole genre has changed and is run like a business now, limited by all the rules of the network, suits; they write within those business parameters now. Cast members come and go, based on contractual dollars to be saved at times, necessitating storylines to abruptly end…stuff like that. GH is unrecognizable these days. I don’t watch anymore, but every now and then I tune in and it’s painful.

Excited to see Kimberly McCullough as your guest in this one!! So interesting to hear about everything she has gone through, having been in the entertainment business from such a young age. I thought she was wonderful as a little girl on GH. She should be so very proud of all of her accomplishments. Love the vibe between the two of you, both when you were in scenes together on GH and here, in real life.

The Aids storyline on GH was so well done and acted. I bawled when Stone died but it was really heart wrenching when Stone who was losing his vision told Robin before he passed that he could see her. Great acting work by Michael and Kimberly. Maurice do you stay in touch with Michael Sutton?

Thank you so much for talking about anxiety and depression. I recently canceled a trip because I was having massive anxiety about going and my husband understood but other family members didn’t as much. It was great to hear that saying no and cancelling things that make you so anxious that you can barely function even before the event is an ok thing to do. I felt like 2 million pounds was lifted off my shoulders when I cancelled. I wasn’t feeling guilty about it but now I know I’m not the only one! Just discovered your podcast and I look forward to more.

Omg!!! I went to Jr.high with Joaquin and his brother. I forgot how to spell his name. Joaquin used to always tell me to, "Let the music play." Because the singer's name was Shannon. I used to go to Skate Station in Anaheim to watch them break dance. What a blast from the past. Thank you , again for your podcast.

I'm sitting here having evacuated New Orleans and Ida and this interview is the first time I've been able to take my mind off of my reality. Thank you.
Growing up in the 80s and watching daily during the (in my opinion) PEAK of soaps (mid-late 90s), I will ALWAYS love Kimberly with all my heart. This episode made me so happy. And yes, KM makes me cry pretty much just from appearing on my screen!
I wish soaps could be the way the were in during Sonny/Brenda/Robin/Jason/SB Carly/Quartermaines, Luke/Laura/JJ Lucky, etc. It's never been that good again.
I love that you're both Pisces. But ROBIN is certainly a Libra like me. ;)

Maurice I can't tell you how amazing these podcasts have been for me. GH was very important to me in the 80's. Hell I even remember Niko and Cecily on AMC. To see you talk real talk with actors that had such an impact on me is wonderful and bless you for doing this. We need Tony Geary, Genie Francis,Jack Wagner, Kristina Milandro. You know what, if anyone can make that happen it's you Bro. Love ya to the moon and back and keep up the fine work please.

There are very few interviews I find worth listening to twice, and this was one of them. Kim is always a great interview but having her and Maurice get real as old pals and discuss the nitty gritty of life, work and mental health, well, sign me up for when they do Part II. 😉

I remember when Kimberly was first on General Hospital it was great to hear all her stories. It was interesting to find out she has been directing I'll have to check her credits to see what she's directed.
I loved watching General Hospital back in late 70s through early 2000s. I loved the 90s era with Robin, Brenda, Sonny, Jagger, Stone etc. I wish there was a streaming service that would show it GH from beginning to now. Great interview.

I think Maurice is talking about the scenes where Jason and Robin are on the bridge and they are discussing whether she should go on the HIV protocol or not. Those scenes were amazing. I was so obsessed with Jason and Robin back in the day. 😩😭 They did such a great job.
