Operation BAD ELF

  • The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office has recently concluded a highly successful week-long operation to combat retail theft across the region. Focusing on popular retail establishments such as Target, Walgreens, and Walmart, the operation was a strategic effort to address the rising concerns surrounding theft and its impact on local businesses and communities.
Deputies and detectives from the Sheriff’s Centralized Investigations Bureau collaborated seamlessly in a coordinated effort to identify, track, and apprehend individuals involved in retail theft. The operation, which took place over the course of a week, utilized both uniformed and plain clothes officers strategically positioned within targeted retail locations. This approach aimed to deter theft and catch perpetrators in the act.
Sheriff Cooper emphasized the importance of safeguarding businesses and ensuring the safety of community members. “Retail theft not only affects the businesses directly but also has a ripple effect on our communities. By addressing this issue head-on, we are sending a clear message that criminal activities will not be tolerated, and our community’s safety remains our top priority.”
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the importance of community engagement and encouraged residents to remain vigilant against retail theft. Sheriff Cooper stated, “We cannot combat this issue alone. We need the active involvement of the retailers for this type of success to continue. They need to make an investment in their stores’ safety, as we are not their 24/7 private security.”
The Sheriff’s Office successfully recovered stolen merchandise worth tens of thousands of dollars and 285 felony and misdemeanor arrests, providing a significant boost to the affected retailers.
While these arrests are significant, major problems lie within weak legislation. Sacramento County currently has over 33,000 outstanding misdemeanor warrants, many of which stem from offenses such as shoplifting and other theft-related crimes. Until a measure is put on the ballot for voters, California will continue to face these same problems, regardless of enforcement.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to ongoing efforts to combat crime, protect local businesses, and ensure the safety and well-being of residents. The success of this recent operation reflects the dedication and effectiveness of law enforcement professionals in addressing pressing community concerns.

I have seen this Sheriff in other videos here (I am nearby, in Rio Vista). He seems like a no-nonsense guy. This video shows that he thinks out of the box. He seems like a pretty impressive person. Congrats Sacramento for having a Sheriff like him! Sheriff, if you read these comments, I applaud you! 👍

I don't live in Sacramento, but I'm glad to see this sheriff and his department trying to do something about the rampant retail theft. The thieves steal because they don't think they'll face any consequences. At least this might make some of them think twice.

I'm leaving Sacramento and moved down to a place in the bay area where there aren't bums everywhere and I can shop at target where the shelves are fully stocked and nothing has to be locked up. It feels like I'm free there. All of the trash on the streets of Sac and shopping with everything locked up is a terrible feeling when you call someplace home. I can't take it anymore. I literally only come to Sacramento for work and leave as soon as I can.

Last night I was at a grocery store and saw a person carry out an armful of expensive items without having gone through the register. I notified the manager and she said that they cannot do anything about it. I have a family member who works at a grocery store and I pick them up at 11pm. While waiting by the door, three times, yes three times, I have seen someone push a grocery cart full out the door without paying. Only one of them was confronted by an employee. I have also seen it at CVS and they had a baby stroller full of electronics. I confronted them and had to let it go when they argued back. When is enough enough? WE are paying for it...

I’m sorry Jim Cooper but you’re wrong in saying “retailers need to step up”. Our Government, our DA needs to step up. As an elected official working for the people, they need to stop pandering to criminals because that’s what Newson wants them to do. Crime wont change until people punish criminals and make crimes actually a crime.

    • @cindym8342

I agree with what you're saying, but I think that he is trying to get help because he is not getting it from where help should be coming from. Oh, how the DA's make me sick! I feel bad for law enforcement. They do all of this work only to see the criminals out again, doing the same thing, over and over, again and again. So disheartening.

I agree with you all that does need to step up too, but these top retailers are hiring security and telling them not to do anything but stand there and stare at people. Unarmed, no OC spray no hand cuffs ,no baton, no training, basically just stand there so we can say we have security.

@@Steven-mw2wt its a visual deterrent that doesn’t work. They don’t allow them to step in and stop the criminals because the companies lawyers wont allow it. Crime is punishable and has been for hundred’s of years.

You didn't take what he said in context. He's asking for the retailers to help fund the ballot initiative to change the law. Right now DAs can't do anything because of the laws on the books. That needs to change, but in order for that to happen money has to be contributed to the ballot initiative. Only the voters can change what happens with the current laws.
