  • Prepar3d V5 was launched April 14 2020 and since then I have been flying in it non stop. Is it good? Do I like it? Of course I discuss this and more in the video.
    Planes used:
    A2A: 172, 182, V35, Cub
    Addons: ORBX scenery, and that is it.
    Sim: Prepar3d v5

    Bonjour/Hello/Hallo Nick,
    For all veterans of FSX Deluxe, FSX Steam, regretted FSW (Flight Sim World), I can officially attest that Lockheed Martin Prepar3D is the obvious choice for our group of virtual Pilots.
    Other platforms are indeed innovative and interesting, but familiarity (with Prepar3D) is so comforting.
    No need to dig in the manuals (again).
    I currently own Version 1-2-3-4 on 2 different PC's driven with SSD's.
    Familiarity and user friendly interface makes it so comfortable.
    Just like your faithful old dog/cat/or favorite couch.
    Well deserved "Thumbs up" on your very well presented video.
    CYUL

      I’m very interested to see what LR does. It sounds like X-Plane 12 will be a thing and Austin (X-Plane creator) has mentioned that they are working on the “next generation of scenery”. A lot of people are comparing the Vulkan release of X-Plane to P3D v5 and that really isn’t apples to apples. For X-Plane, Vulkan is simply a new feature they’ve released (still in beta at the moment) for their existing version 11. For P3D they have released a whole new version (from v4 to v5). The accurate comparison will be to see what X-Plane 12 looks like and it sounds like LR has some things up their sleeve.

    P3d v5 has promise, but there are lot's of issue's to fix, like the water for me from a distance while flying doesn't look real (see MSFS videos/screenshots to see real looking water in a flightsim) and the clouds in amongst the mountains needs to be smoothed out rather than sometimes being square and sometimes they flicker, but it's a definite improvement over all, I would of rather LM took a little longer in releasing v5, release things when the new features were working better, the wow factor would of been much improved.

    Thanks Nick. Great vid. (Subbing now). Really enjoyed the water footage.
    Orbx True Earth HD works faultlessly for me. Only issue is running out of VRAM if I instst on going to Central London leaving 4K resolution, textures and sliders maxed. But there is always the age old fix for that - 'turn your sliders down'. Fortunately on my 8 GB VRAM card, I seem to be able to do everywhere else at max in True Earth HD.
    It seems that there is now a place for 16 GB VRAM cards. Even the 11 GB Ti guys report running out of VRAM in extremes.

    • @NickSilverYT
      @NickSilverYT  4 роки тому

      My take is I think this has more to do with the add on developers than LM. Everyone wants the photo real razor crisp textures on these add on airports, planes, photo real scenery (orthos, True Earth etc), the massive poly count buildings or planes where the rivets are 3d modeled takes up alot of not just VRAM but computing power. Its one thing to play, let's say the new Doom, and a fairly recent 1000-1200 gaming setup will smash it. The developers have maps, with corridors, the same repeating enemies etc. Much easier to plan your memory and processing requirements when you have a finite amount of real estate to work with. I am no game developer but it sounds logical...I could also be very very wrong here.
      Swap to something like a flight sim, where you have the ability to have 30-60+ miles or terrain on screen, you have the complex avionics and flight modeling, lets not forget clouds, winds, lighting and on top of that throw other airplanes in the sky with you. Then you have the aftermarket add on's.. Now that takes alot more out of the system. Much much much harder to have a hard limit of resources on something like that because everyone is going to be upset. I now have a $5k gaming system that has the same image quality as a $2k but better fps if they had a hard limit...
      The ability to tune the system, which screws everyone because we got used to slamming sliders right and only caring about FPS, is also what allows it to grow. IF we run mid settings now, and next year the 3080 comes out, it is good to know that the sim will now actually take advantage of that GPU or new cpu and allow us to adjust things.
      I am super thankful we are not stuck like in FSX....keep throwing a faster core 2 duo or core 2 quad at it, and then drop money on an 8800 ultra and get next to no real improvement from either.
      Thanks for the sub and the comment!

      A couple years later and my thoughts have changed. Probably time for a follow up video. It’s hard for me to recommend v5 at this time unless you have a bunch of money to throw at it. MSFS started out very rocky and I think most of my points about it were fairly true at launch but as of mid summer now in 2022 it has matured a lot and is pretty solid. Not to mention the 3rd party devs basically leaving P3D high and dry in regards to new products.
      I still love P3D and v4/v5 have some amazing planes for it but it seems like a dead avenue at this time unfortunately. The market shifted and the devs went where the money is. I can’t blame em for that.

    • @HarmanMotorWorks
      @HarmanMotorWorks Рік тому +1

      @@NickSilverYT Sorry to hear that. You make some very valid points. I think for me though, it's more about experiencing A2A's excellent aircraft in a more 'recent' engine with the better fog, lighting and cockpit shadows etc. I've been pushing FSX for a long, long time and I'd love to see the likes of their B-17 in a newer lighting engine etc. I'm aware they are doing up their Comanche for MSFS as we speak, but I'm not sure if they will bring across their larger warbirds anytime soon. I guess you could say my reasons for getting P3Dv5 at this late stage of the game, are quite niche and won't apply to everyone (or even most people, for that matter)

    • @NickSilverYT
      @NickSilverYT  4 роки тому

      The 2070 super was a solid upgrade from the 2060 I was using before.
      As for Xplane or P3D that is not a cut and dry answer. Both have pros and cons. Do you use a simulator now? That might be a better starting off point to look at. I have them both, but I prefer P3D. I have a lot more invested in the P3D side of things and prefer the way it looks with add ons. That’s not to say Xplane is bad. Far from it. The orbx True Earth products in Xplane are amazing and super stoked to see the announcement they will be coming back to P3D finally as the FTX regions have been around for ages.
      P3D has a much larger library of high quality add on planes, especially in the tube liner area. But these are all payware and some are prohibitively expensive. Whilst Xplane has a growing freeware scene especially around ortho scenery and mods to existing releases aircraft.
      It’s all in what you want to get out of your sim...

    I have been considering buying Prepar3d. I have a lot of FSX flight modules. But I have a lot of issues with fsx even though my hardware is great and I can run msfs2020 in vr and dcs world just fine. So I wanted to know if it was worth upgrading to Prepar3d cause I heard all the fsx modules are mostly compatible with it and I could probably get a more stable and better framerate since fsx is so old. Seems like a worthy upgrade if I get the stability and frames that xplane 11 gives me.

    • @NickSilverYT
      @NickSilverYT  2 роки тому

      Well as far as compatibility, you will need to review that on a case by case basis because a lot of the better addons do require a new purchase or an upgrade to P3D versions.
      Stability in 5.3 is the best it has been for v5, performance is great if you have good hardware. I would say the performance is greater, at least for me in v5 vs Xplane 11 in vulkan and more stable but your mileage may very. That’s the thing with these complex sim programs, it seems no two similar systems perform the same.

People are already crowning MSFS2020 based off of marketing hype. I haven’t heard that it’s exactly the greatest from some of the feedback of gotten from some Alpha testers (albeit I know it is just in alpha) and don’t quite get why people are choosing to no longer support or invest in the existing sims due to something that is not even released yet.

      Likely I will be using FSX along side FS2020 but the only reason would be because it will take developers some time to release products for the new simulator.
      Don't get me wrong. P3D V5 looks great. But as a person who wants to enjoy VFR flights, it is not good enough. FS2020 already have shown the potential to produce the exact real world scenery by building it from the actual satellite image. I assume this will be great for VFR flights. Yeah it has been a minute since it came out...might be time for an update, especially after all the hooplah in the comments about me doubting the greatness of MSFS. Turns out MSFS is high on visuals and low on the flying aspect.
      I still spend about 80% of my time in P3Dv5, 10% in DCS and 10% in MSFS.
      V5 is much more stable then it was at launch but DX12 still presents its fair share of issues in regards to vram etc. But the performance is immensely better than v4, at the trade off of some instability. LM is working on getting to the bottom of the issues in tandem with nvidia and amd.
      Downside is if you have alot of addons in FSX, not all will work in v5. I imagine most outside of the ORBX/Carenado realm will require a repurchase or upgrade fee from the developer.

But being someone who wants realism in flt sim i am looking for a possible to change. I'm not sure which way to go as the last time I changed I could not use a lot of my ad-on from flt sim X and lost a lot of money as i had to replace them for P3Dv4 so I'm a little worried weather I can use all my add-on with P3Dv5. So can anyone tell me if add-on used in p3dv4 can be used in 5. I'm pretty sure none off my add-on will not work in MS2020

      Well some stuff will work, some won’t without updates and some require a new version (paid). There was more changed behind the scenes then a simple graphics engine overhaul, which caused a lot developers to spend a bit more time to port their existing stuff over in some regards. Things like ORBX scenery, A2A planes, Reality XP GTN etc were free upgrades others charged for the upgrade or released a specific V5 model. You basically have to go developer by developer to see.

    Thanks for the vid, I purchased V5 when it was released and I'm totally unimpressed at this stage. For an out of the box sim it's pretty ordinary, I was expecting much more without all my addons. I've been flying VR now for 2 years and just can't go back to a monitor, and as you addressed the VR is unusable because of the stutter. It's as if LM considered VR as an afterthought where in my opinion VR is the future of flight simming. I can't speak for MSFS 2020 because all we have are pretty pictures, it may end up being a total disaster for those who have less than the highest end systems and bandwidths of less than 50mbs, only time will tell. But for P3D V5 I'm certainly far less enthusiastic than you and I'll not be deleting V4.5 any time soon.

      I appreciate the comment and the thoughts. By the sounds of the VR issues, it was some sort of difference between the way things work in DX12 refrence, vs the way things were being done by Steam VR, Occulus, and WMR. Which is a shame, you would think LM, gearing the product to the commercial/government side would have done their homework a little more in regards to testing, especially in regards to VR. Being used to help practice missions or simulate events I would have thought VR would be at the top of the list....Sad to see it obviously wasn't.

    So the whole vram issue is that going to be fixed or is that going to stick around for a while?

    • @NickSilverYT
      @NickSilverYT  4 роки тому

      Ryan Phillips “fixed” is not the right word. According to Lockheed, DX12 does not have a built in driver level way of preventing an issue of using more vram than a card has. Unlike DX11 which would overflow at a driver level to system ram and just give you a big fps hit and stutters. HF1 which was released last week has an implementation that you can check off in the display settings that will basically start scaling back texture resolution on far away objects etc as you reach your VRAM limit. But it will not prevent the sim from crashing if it still goes over the limit due to some of these add on planes and airports just being massive.
      Really everyone is mad at LM for this, but I think more blame is on the 3rd Party developers. They have long touted “4K textures” on every item of a plane or scenery package, along with modeling needless things. We don’t need to see every fiber of carpet in the cabin or how much gum is stuck to a seat with 1cm per pixel res textures. Same thing with these massive add on airports. I think everyone got lazy because the dx11 implementation just slowed us all down instead of crashing. DX12 unlocks alot more of the graphics card to be used but that performance comes without the hand holding of dx11 in terms of vram.

    • @ryanphillips5688
      @ryanphillips5688 4 роки тому

      @@NickSilverYT that's really intresting, so do other mainstream games also have to be careful of of vram? Why does dx12 kinda downgrade its self is this area?

    • @NickSilverYT
      @NickSilverYT  4 роки тому

      It’s not really a downgrade because the api allows lower level control of the graphics card. It’s trade off since you have more control over the card, the api won’t control it for you. This allows a developer to get a whole lot more out of the card to include asynchronous computing (which is one of the big selling points).
      All DX12 titles and Vulkan titles as well have this inherent “limitation”. This is easily remedied by most of the developers because the games they make are in a sealed off static world. If I am making the new doom, I can design my levels, mobs, etc and fine tune it to stay within a budget amount of vram. An open world flight simulator, that is designed to grow over the next few years is a completely different beast. We are now taking about a vast world of add on airports, planes, shaders, cloud effects, other programs such as a GPS or etc etc etc etc. If they implement some sort of limit we all will complain because it defines the experience for us. It doesn’t allow us to choose what add ons etc to run. What setting we prefer etc. that’s their theory and reason why they added the vram totals to the infotext so we can adjust our systems accordingly.
      Massive difference in approach from a closed environment game and an open development flight sim.

      So, it turns out micro-stuttering is more of an Intel thing, as it does not multi-thread much in flight sims. The Intel DNA comes from when the focus was on pure single-thread performance, and their cpus just don't have the DNA to multi-thread these apps. The Ryzen DNA was born in a multi-thread era and works completely differently.
      Have a look at 24 threads spiking to max in P3Dv5. imgur.com/a/hP2Yucq
      And here imgur.com/gallery/LuU1ruC for my 'old' R1700 at just 3.4 GHz in P3Dv4. Could you max out an Intel? (NOTE new XP with Vulkan is BIG improvement so those comments are old)
      Getting more multi-threading going ELIMINATES the Intel stutter. You can't even make an Intel multi-thread much here, affinity mask settings and all sorts of buggering around are futile.
      Note - both DX12 for P3D and Vulkan for XP seem to be changing this as most seem to be reporting better fps and much less Intel stutter. But note, stutter is not an AMD thing, because the cpus work completely differently. If you can get ANY Intel cpu to do what my Ryzen shows in those pics, truly, I would like to see it.
      This is not cpu family bashing. This stuff is how it works. And latest graphics engine updates (DX12 and Vulkan) are improving everybody's experience.

      Dimi,
      1. I have enough trouble doing just pics, and would much rather spend my time simming and not figuring out taking and posting vids - something I haven't achieved yet.
      2. People have invested in their current platform and stick with it. It is a real expense to change 'mid flight' so to speak. AFAIK most run Intel systems.
      Much as I would like to oblige you, the short answer is 'No'.
      FWIW, if you look at the cpu\core use on an Intel cpu, (and here, Pre P3Dv5 and XP Vulkan) one core is working flat out, and the other cores are skiving off behind the Gym smoking ciggies, while Tarzan is out front doing all the work.
      WHY? The existing Intel cpus were designed years ago when Intel's main focus was on single core performance, and multi-threading was not on their horizon. It is current Intel DNA they are now fighting. They have added more cores and threads, but if you look at cpu use in P3D, they STILL use just one thread. To get better performance you have to beat the living daylights out of that thread. Look at all the Intel guys who OC. Intel is undisputed king of single thread computing.
      AMD Ryzen cpus were designed when multi-threading is the new reality. Look at cpu use with Ryzen, and there are ALL the cores and threads being used. My new 3900X uses all 24 threads. I'm getting a massive truck load of extra cpu processing my sim. Do you think that would allow a different screen experience? Think about it, even if it is outside your experience as yet.
      All I know is I got totally sick of stutter and found relief with AMD. I've had both.
      Kindly note, Dimi, P3Dv5 with DX12, and X-Plane with Vulkan is changing everybody's experience for the better. We are moving into a cpu agnostic simming future.
      With X-Plane, pre Vulkan, in my pooter only 1 thread was used. Now with Vulkan, I'm getting 4 main threads and up to 8 more threads working. It has made such a massive difference in screen performance, I've now re-installed XP and am enjoying it.

      To me it would be...and I know some detractors out there will say otherwise but at some point things will be v5 only due to taking advantage of V5 specific features, mostly in the scenery department. I would rationalize it as you get more value if you buy early vs wait a year and buy it then. Easier to justify 200 for 3 ish years of a sim vs 200 for 2 years etc. One way to look at it.
      If you have things that don't work in V5 yet or a plane you can always swap back and forth until everything is v5 compliant. They can live on the same machine, even same hard drives.

    Sorry, but those default clouds look utterly awful. The shapes are like dollops of candifloss in ridiculously uniform and symmetrical lumps. No doubt 3rd parties will step forward and fix that, but overall I cannot see any significant advantages compared with v4.5. I agree with another comment. There are some game developers out there who can produce some stunning graphics with very little impact on computer performance. Current flight sims are way behind what is possible, and the normal explanation that there are so many calculations going on just doesn't wash any longer. I hope FS2020 will demonstrate that.

    You were doing ok until you started comparing the "future of flight simulation" between P3D and MSFS and suggesting that P3D is even in the same universe as MSFS. This is a testament of how out of touch one can be. MSFS is still in the ALPHA stage, P3D has been released, yet P3D now (even with all the orbx you can install) does not even look as good as the very first video of MSFS presented. Even if MSFS never gets released, the discovery vids will blow P3D v8 (yes I meant eight) away at this rate.
    If you would have kept MSFS out of the review, I would have remained silent and left you to your opinion about P3D.🧐

    • @rlxts
      @rlxts 4 роки тому

      Ok but the MSFS comparison is necessarily. This is due to the pure nature of P3D in itself. When they started releasing different licence varients in V2; Lockheed realise there is a massive commercial incentive in the development of their software.
      Realistically the comparison does NEED to be made on some level, you can have a different opinion of it but the two go hand in hand in the flight sim 2020

      Out of touch, or am I taking a realistic approach to what has become available to us today vs the perceived greatness of a product that is far away from release? It is okay to be excited for 2020. I think everyone is hoping beyond hope that the promotional material is not just overhyped PR shots and it delivers on everything they claim it to be and performs as amazing as their videos claim it to.
      I do feel though that it is an extremely fair comparison to say a new release is the current future of flight simulation considering it is a platform that is actively being developed, has a strong backing from it's parent company (same certainly can't be said by Microsoft's treatment in the past) along with 3rd party support. Ill take a product I can buy, load up and use vs the promise of greatness, and an awesome advertising campaign that is not available and wont be anytime soon. One I can actually use, the other I can only read about and gawk over promo vid's.

      @@NickSilverYT Thank you for your response :-)
      You say plainly that there is no need to wait for MSFS. But you clearly know that you are waiting for the same old fixes that we all have waited more than 10 years for. So yes you are out of touch, by continuing to defend stagnation in the name of hoping that an add-on developer will eventually try to tackle at least 1 of the major issues that are sorely lacking in P3D. How many thousands of dollars will it eventually cost for P3D V5 users to get True Earth for the rest of the world? And how long will you have to wait? By the time Asia has a True Earth offering, P3D may be at version 10. That is no future, its a crystal ball that shatters with delays and bugs and delays and excuses and bugs and on and on....a circle of death, rather than life.....
      I'm trying to keep the topic more squared on P3D because I think that if you tried to see the bigger picture, you would see the futility in the P3D franchise trying to achieve a 21st century level of realism in a home based flight sim. To get even a kind of good sense of realism one has to run 10-20 even 30 add-on programs which end up conflicting and taking huge chunks out of performance. ATC add-on's that have so many flaws and lack so many basics that it ends up as a bad joke. All because with P3D there is TOO MUCH emphasis on add-on's. The plain P3D needs to become a realistic flight sim all by itself (no add-ons) , then when MSFS is released doing a comparison between them will be sensible.
      I do not mind a strong and healthy add-on developer eco-system, but P3D takes this too far and the sim itself becomes more and more a laughing stock. Its playing out right before our very eyes. Reviews (like yours and others) full of excuses, essentially become plain lies in the name of kindness/understanding, but that is not being kind to the community...the old problems remain, all the while new ones are added. I warned about this very kind of thing to MS way back in the FS9 beta.

      @@NickSilverYT The vast majority of the screen captures published by Asobo are captured by Alpha testers like me. The "photos" Asobo releases every week to the public are exactly what's in the sim. Nothing is fudged or faked in any way. Remember, many members of the Alpha testing group will hear your comments at the end of the video and view you, quite correctly, as uninformed and out of the loop. You ruined an otherwise helpful review.

    Anyone who looks at footage from MS2020 and STILL thinks it's overhyped and not much better then the other sims, is completely delusional.
    There is no simulator, even with all the 3rd party add-ons you can imagine (apart from airports) that touches or even comes close to Microsofts New Sim. This is like the jump from flip phone to smartphone.

    I stupidly bought P3D V5. I also run x-plane 11.5b6.
    The fact that this early beta version of P3D V5 has been released at vast cost is disgusting. It is full of bugs and problems that should have been resolved before release. It is unstable as heck. The default airports are a joke.
    P3D has had its day. It still fails to take advantage of the architecture of any PC that runs multiple cores (I.e. all of them for the last number of years).
    It’s VR implementation has not been touched... it remains dreadful. How you can’t suggest it is better than x-plane is beyond me! Just watch the side by side video recently released on a flight in Norway comparing the two. The graphics in P3D are dreadful.
    In my view, the release of P3D V5 appears to be a cynical move by a lazy Lockheed Martin to get in as much money as possible before the release of FS2020.
    I simply do not know how you can recommend that anyone buys this right now.

    • @NickSilverYT

      All I can say is my experience with 11.5b6 is the opposite, at least with Vulkan rendering turned on in VR. The new ORBX TE SoCal is a blurry mess, and while the FPS is an improvement over 11.41r1, for me it is unusable until they sort their texture compression issue out which according the xplane forums should be sorted out in .5b8.
      As for 5 being unstable, once again my experience is the exact opposite, especially post hotfix. I have not had an issue since then. Of course with the myriad of various hardware and software config everyone’s mileage will vary.

    • @Drmerlin604

      Nick Silver really is weird Nick. I have the Reverb headset. I have Orbx TE installed and have absolute clarity and stutter free performance in VR.
      I am very disappointed that the VR in P3D V5 is exactly the same as in 4.5... I have a motion seat so using a mouse to navigate is almost impossible whereas the hand controllers in x-plane are fully featured.
