I used to work with a guy from Spain and, since he could not speak English, we spoke only in Spanish. There was also a young Romanian couple who worked with us and one day I took them home in my car (with Juan - the Spanish guy). I chatted to Juan for 20mins and then dropped him at his house. The 2 Romanians then told me that they could understand everything we said in Spanish. So maybe you can't understand them .....but they can understand you just fine! Most of the words they use in Spanish or Italian languages we also have and use in the Romanian vocabulary but we also have, learn and use synonyms of those words that have their origin in other languages like Geto-Dacian, Slavic, Magyar, Turkish, German etc.
Closest as in percentage compared to the others, but the slavic influence is strongly present (vocabulary and grammar as well) and actually reinforced some of its latin traits that were also present in slavic languages, while the rest lost them.
Romanian is not different because its (Western) Latin + Slavic. Its different because it comes from Eastern Latin spoken in the Balkans (Dalmatian, Proto-Romanian: ("Aromanian") Macedo-Romanian, Istro-Romanian, Megleno-Romanian). So many of Romanian's words are Latin, but were not used by modern Western Romance languages, or are used differently. Aromanian (from the Balkans) is very similar to Romanian, it doesn't have a Slavic influence, and yet Western Romance speakers would still not understand most of it. Then, to further complicate things, this Eastern Latin mixed with some Dacian, then some Slavic (because of the Bulgarian Empire), then Hungarian (invading Transylvania), some Turkish bits (Ottoman Empire), etc.
The thing is, many people still seem to have a hard time accepting that Romanian is in the Romance group and always lump it with Slavic and Russian. Especially Americans. Most of my friends who I've told about the history and identity of the language just go like "oh ok", and then the next time the topic comes up they completely forget and assume Romanian is basically the same thing as Russian. I've had some conversations about this over a dozen times with some people and they just don't get it lol. The association is too strong to break.
The Romans who retired in Dacia were mostly Sicilian and southern Italians. Aside from Italian, Romanian is the closest language to Sicilian. The reason Romanian has a strong resemblance to Portuguese and Spanish is due to Emperor Trajan relocating many gold minors from the Iberian peninsula to mine the gold-rich caves in Dacia, providing Rome enough gold to get the empire out of a lot of debt. Our language also proves it.

That was a difficult clip because of the poem she quoted. Because the phrasing and vocabulary are high level it is harder to understand. She also describes some areas/places in the beginning and you would not recognize the place names.
1. The Romanian girl's' speech (including the poetry ) contains 4 words of Slavic origin and 1 from Hungarian. The sound is very poor, but the reason why the other Romance speakers generally don't understand Romanian is because in some cases Romanian inherited other words from Latin or with a different meaning and a different phonetic evolution. 2. There was no such thing as "relatinization". The word loans during the 19th century only reflect the modernization of the society, culture, institutions etc getting out of the Middle Ages were Romanians were kept by the Ottomans. So the words adopted can be considered as international as they exist even in Germanic or Slavic languages. Only words that became obsolete disappeared, not only words of Slavic or Turkish origin, but also old words inherited from Latin disappeared or became less common, or have fewer meanings.

True, in its spoken version at least. But as a romanian speaker, I understand approximately 70 % of french in its written form. Many french words are spelled exactly the same in Romanian, or very similar, but pronounced in a totally different manner
I am sorry, I want to add something to the 'history' part. Dacian/Geto-Dacian are Hellenic languages, like Greek/Illiric (Albanian). The Roman empire had Dacia indeed for just 150 years (approx), BUT: Roman Empire was South of the Danube for HUNDRETS of years, so the influence is more than 150 years. Also: Dobruja region of Romania (Black Sea) kept being a part of the Roman empire for an extra of 400 years or so. Many Germanic/Slavi tribes/empires came to Romania after that, but because the Balkan region became very multi-cultural (slavic languages, Hellenic languages, Germanic languages) and because the Bizantine Empire was there for hundreds and hundreds of years, Latin became something like 'English'. Everyone spoke a little Latin so they could all speak with each other. Also, Romanian dialects are still spoken today in North Greece (Armână) or in Croatia, on the Istrian Peninsula (Istro-Română), and in parts of Bulgaria they also speak (Megleno-Română). They are all Latin-based and similar to Romanian. :)
