Porsche 356A Oil Change!

  • Опубліковано 15 сер 2024
  • Hi Everyone, Today we do the Spring oil change in our 1958 Porsche 356 A T2 Cabriolet! Pretty straight forward process really. I do two oil changes a year with a filter change once a year. If you have any questions/comments, please leave them below.
    The parts used are:
    • Oil Filter OX79
    • Case drain plug: 539.01.133
    You’ll need:
    • 19mm Wrench
    • 22mm Wrench
    • Drain Pans
    • ~5 Qts of oil. (I used Valvoline 20W50 Racing)
    The required tools scene only shows a 19mm wrench (for the drain plug), but you’ll also need a 22mm wrench (or socket) for the oil filter canister hat bolt.
    We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.

    Instead of using a turkey baster for removing the old oil from the oil filter canister, I've found aftermarket pumps that fit into quart bottles to work much better. Just place a jar beside the canister and pump into it. Less messy and it gets more out. You can find these pumps at any auto parts store for about $5. If you need extra reach, you can attach a tube to either end, suction or discharge.

    I had to do a lot of research in the forums about what oil (viscosity and brands) to use in my 65 C. Freeze framed Heidi's most excellent camera work and saw the viscosity...yes! (Of course I read all the comments after watching and there it was....20w50!
    Many thanks again for simple, direct and well edited videos...(and if your kitchen is as clean as your cars I'd eat turkey with y'all anytime.)

      :) Yea! I will add that to the description. My bad. Sorry about that. Yup, Valvoline 20W50 Racing. I believe it has a bit of added Zinc as well. Thanks for pointing that out! Have fun in you C car! Franny

    Thanks for the video! I just inherited this car from my grandfather. He taught me the basics before he passed but it was really only where components were and how to fill / check the oil and fuses. This helped me so much! Thanks!

    Excellent video! I have a couple of suggestions from my 57 years of changing oil on all makes and styles of oil sumps and filters.
    Regarding the drain plug, how about taking your torque wrench and see what the actual torque you have been using all along? Seeing that really long wrench really scares me - it looks like an opportunity for Murphy's Law.
    Instead of a turkey baster, I've been using a soft soap dispenser pump from a bottle to just stick into whatever fluid is in a tight area (power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission shifter turret on a Miata, etc.) and just pump the liquid out. I have several of these, all labeled and stored in different empty coffee cans (repurposed plastic cans) for regular use.
    I love the fact that you don't overtighten anything! Keep the videos coming!

    Hello Franny and Heidi...commented recently on the turkey baster. Recently added a perfect 20 year old SL500 to my garage..surprise, surprise it has virtually the same oil filter set up as our 356's. A turkey baster won't work on this one so researched and found an oil suction gun (OTC 2359. ) Google it...available most places for less than $20...works flawlessly...no mess...what's not to love? PS...checked out your 356 fuel pump video just now...two thumbs up!

    German vehicle gets an oil change every 10,000 miles. or 2 years. So changing the magnet thing every 3k is a nogo. Every 30k maybe. If you change your oil before 7k miles in a german vehicle, your wasting your money, 7k miles if you run it hard. 10k under normal conditions. Porsche 911's are 20k or every 2 years.

    I see "1600" on this lovely porsche and just wanted to ask could this at all be relative to a 1600 Vw?...I'm a little new to this and need to change the oil on my 72 super beetle. People tell me amsoil 10w-30, Valvoline 20w-50, any recommendations? Great video by the way, love these clear and easy to follow instructional videos.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 років тому

      Thanks so much! I'm a fan of the Valvoline 20W-50. It has extra zinc and you can get it anywhere :) Oh, I just uploaded a complete VW service video. It is super long, but should help: ua-cam.com/video/RJyypWxF3f4/v-deo.html
      The Porchie and VW are cousins. Kind of like the country mouse and the city mouse ;) I did a Compare between the two in this video: ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=kqp113I4a88 if that helps... They are close, but there are several key differences. They are both great, just designed for different uses. It is a testament to the flexibility of the platform and the design talent of their common granfather :) Franny

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 років тому

      Oh, now that can cause a fuss!! I use Valvoline 20W50 Racing. Brad Pen is very popular too. I try to use an oil with a good viscosity, high Zinc and something I can hopefully find on the road if I need to top off on a trip. I change the oil twice a year, but the filter once a year. We do drive the car a good bit averaging close to 4K miles a year. I shoot for every 2K miles. Franny
