Great Video for the 914 Oil Change. Very precise and plain English.
Thanks! hope it helped...
Thank you Ian! You're the best part of the 914 community!
That's so nice to say. Thanks, Steve. But the sum total of everyone is what makes this community great ;)
Love your videos but think they are too short!!! I'm always amazed that people take the time to make videos about what they are doing on cars. I cant imagine all the planning it takes to do that. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! They say it's always best to leave 'em wanting more ;). Yes, it does take time to plan, shoot and edit these videos, but it's my therapy. Please subscribe if you haven't already so my mental health treatment can continue.
Ian, just watched your video after recently buying a 1974 2.0. Great video! Very well done. thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it. Welcome to the addiction ;)
Thanks to this I am much smarter about oil changes than I was. :)
Ha! glad you enjoyed!
I watched this, when I last changed my oil. It's that time again. (To change my oil). Great reference to return to. I think in the old days we'd "space it". Meaning forget something. Again, great reference for the space captains out there, me.😅
I'm sorry...what did you say? lol. We've all spent time in space ;)
Hi Ian,
Really enjoy your channel. I haven’t been wrenching for a couple decades. My 914 mechanic retired, and seeing your channel as inspired me to start doing maintenance items again. Would you consider doing a video showing adjusting valves and changing valve cover gaskets?? Very best to you, and thank you so much for getting that wrench back into my hands. Forgot how satisfying it is.
Thank YOU, Jim! Stories like yours are the main reason I make these videos. I love sharing the joys of wrenching and demystifying things. Yes, a valve adjustment video is coming. I'm waiting for my engine case (and components) to come back from the machine shop. I plan on doing videos detailing every step in the assembly process. Appreciate the suggestion. Keep em coming...and keep wrenching!
Awesome UA-cam channel. Your videos have answered many questions. Thank you
Glad to help!
Great video! Appreciate all your videos. I Have a question pleases.
Is there a reason you do not oil the gaskets on the sump?
Could it cause a leak? Or is it just unnecessary ? And why deal with the mess when trying to assemble. Also maybe could affect torque value?
Not a complaint or criticism just thirst for knowledge.
Thank you again for your excellent videos!!!
just my preference. I've never had a leak from there.
Thanks Ian
Very welcome
Fantastic video - well done! Super informative and concise! Can I ask what size the copper crush washer is? The link no longer works - thanks
Thanks! The washer is a 12 x 18. Looks like belmetric isn't carrying that now. You can definitely try pelican parts...
Thank you for your videos. With my previous 914 I used non-synthetic oil with high zinc content. But with my recently acquired 914 2.0, it was a race car and they used full synthetic. Is there an advantage of using one over the other? I always thought the non-synthetic was better for these engines.
There are a million opinions about oil. I run valvoline VR1 40 wt or Driven DT50. Both have good levels of ZDDP which is needed for older flat tappet engines. Some people say that non-synthetic tends to leak less. Bottom line...if you change your oil yearly and don't put more than 3K miles per year, pretty much any oil with ZDDP should be fine.
@@IanKarr thanks for the quick reply. I do have an oil leak but the engine was rebuilt 20 yrs ago. I will keep using synthetic with ZDDP.
Keep the videos coming. Your channel is very helpful.
I’ve just started to dive into your videos. Thank you for making these- huge head start. I have an odd sump a “weltmiester oil trap” apparently it runs with out a screen. Any input on if I should keep that or swap for something simple?
I'm generally a believer that if it ain't broke... I'm not familiar with that sump. Is there some reason you're running an external unit?
@@IanKarr I inherited a 914 from my neighbor that used it as an instruction car on the track. Lots of add-ons that I’m going through. Currently I’ve watched your videos dropped the motor and am about to take on the clutch. I’d be stoked to get some advise when I’m in there - are you still active on Patreon? Happy to sign up if you are.
hey there. yes i'm still active on patreon.com/iankarr
@@IanKarr alright! Look out for me - I’ll be signing up full steam .. pulled motor last night with out a hitch. Diving into it with a deadline.
Another great video!
Thanks again!
nice video. I also watched your video about changing the bushings in the A-arms. Do you have a video about installing the A-arms? Mainly what problems should be avoided in doing so?
Thanks. Changing the bushings took so much time to get right (and shoot) that I needed to hustle to get my car back on the road...so I didn't shoot the install. Will definitely cover that in my bumblebee series coming up...
I don’t have jack stands or anything g that allows me to elevate the care evenly. Are you sure ramps aren’t sufficient?
If the bottom of the crankcase is tilted, there will be oil left on the low side. Can you use ramps? Yes, but probably about 25% of the oil will be left in there.
Thanks for the videos, have you ever installed an external oil cooler with sandwich plate? I would be interested in seeing the mounting of the cooler and fan.
Thanks, Boyd! I've never tackled an external oil cooler, but if I do, I certainly will video it!
I have a question: I have a 914 1.8 1974 Porsche, I can't get the front hood to open what do you recommend, oh the car has been setting for 30 years. hope you can help me or on of your viewers .
If you take off the front bumper (4 bolts-two in each wheel well), there's a hole next to the latch mechanism where you can stick a screwdriver and actuate the latch. Assuming it isn't stuck ;). Def post on 914world on FB or 914world.com for more knowledgeable responses....
@@IanKarr thank you Ill try it and let you know.
thank it worked!
what size is the copper sealing washer? you link shows many options.
It's a 12 x 18
1973 914 2.0 oil strainer stuck in block/ first change /stored since 1999/51000 original mi
Just be gentle with a plastic pry tool….
@@IanKarr I think it's been siliconed in to stop leaks. We don't have access to a digesil dissolver here in Canada. Thank's for your reply,

Yes, it is
