Mither Tap Hillfort | Chapel of Garioch | Aberdeenshire | Scotland.
Mither Tap is a prominent landscape feature in the Garioch area of Aberdeenshire. The name translates as Mothers Top or possibly Mothers Tit. The hill strongly resembles the shape of a female breast. Mither Tap is part of Bennachie which has a visitor centre at its base. The appearance of Mither Tap changes dramatically from the Garioch area to actually being on the top of Bennachie.
The hill at 535m high, has a well preserved Pictish fort just below its granite tor which was probably constructed and in use from the 1st millennium AD. Large walls of rubble enclose the natural top which resembles a nipple, this is the remains of an ancient fortification. It is possible the fort’s origins started in the Iron Age
Charcoal dated from 340AD to 780AD further suggests usage in the Pictish era. Archaeologists found steps leading down to a well. This was first recorded in the 19th century then covered over for two hundred years. Archaeologists think this well could be one thousand years old. A 3D model of this rediscovery has been created.
Easter Aquhorthies recumbent stone circle, near Inverurie has been carefully placed with Mither Tap in clear view. This is likely female symbolism or earth goddess/earth mother worship. The Easter Aquhorthies recumbent stone was quarried from near Bennachie which may also have been very important.
Another example is Hatton of Ardoyne circle which seems to have its remaining flanker point to Mither Tap just peaking over Bennachie. Mither Tap seems to have been very important to the neolithic, recumbent stone circle builders. A few other examples of sites being aligned with Mither Tap are Inschfield stone circle, The Picardy Symbol Stone and The Bass of Inverurie.
Mither Tap is a very strenuous climb with outstanding panoramic views of the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside. It is popular with walkers and visitors. A full day can be enjoyed exploring the public pathways over Bennachie. The Maiden Stone is located near the visitor centre and is also worth a visit.
A HUGE Thanks to our ancient ancestors.

Whenever I see your video posts my imagination begins to feel what it must have been like to live there or near the site that you're describing.
The more isolated the place the easier I can feel it!
I think I've asked this before, have you spoken of the sites on Lewis?
Callanish is very striking and there is a less imposing stone circle near the bridge that connects Lewis to Great Bernera.
I lived in Bernera quite a while ago, a truly beautiful place!
Thankyou for your tireless efforts to bring the ancient ancestors back closer to us x.

Hello Lesley, Thanks for your kind words on my videos, I am happy you get something from them. The Callanish site you are talking about is known as Clitier or Callanish VIII, you can find a video for this site in my Callanish section.

Hi Mark, Yes! I created a Tap O' Noth video which you will find in the Aberdeenshire section. Tap'o Noth hit the headlines about a month ago regarding archaeological finds.
