According to r/mtgrules, Investigate X triggers Marneus' draw X times. The reference usually linked as proof is Full Flowering's scryfall page, where it is stated that with "Populate X times" the tokens enter the battlefield one at a time
Such a cool commander, some how both generically strong and specific enough to give a direction to build around. As an aside it would be cool to see some decks that instead of just following the less then a dollar per card were ways to upgrade and rework precons. still use the rule for cards that are added but allow cards over the limit that are in the same precon as a commander to be used.
Calgar is super hungry for mana. So try to take mana rocks and lands that come into play untapped. Tapped mana rocks and lands really hold this deck back. If your deck is set up with 20 to 25 token generating cards there is roughly a 1 in 4 chance that every card you play will draw another card you could play. So he can go on total chain reactions but the limiter is how much mana he has access to that turn, so he needs mana immediately. If you cannot get good untapped dual lands then just use basic lands because this deck tends to need the mana immediately. I admit to using 3 search lands like terramorphic expanse that bring the mana into play tapped. But those search lands have the added effect of reducing the size of my deck and increasing the percentage chance that I draw the cards I want. So I am willing to take that burden of having tapped land, but only on the lands that provide such a large additional effect.
I'm thinking a few sac outlets instead would make the on-death payoffs a little more consistent, but I absolutely love how the whole build turns deny the witch into a finisher. Very thematic! Papa smurf would never work with a demon though!!!
You can even go endless with this commander with training grounds + Ashnods Altar and draw your whole Deck. With Thassas Oracle you can finish the game 👍
I've build marneus with a artifact token strategy. Treasures, clues, food, thopter, myr, servo, constructs. It makes all of them, and it makes them alot. Mix in some artificial aristrocrat and close out the game. I finally got a reason to play marionette master and it's friends nadier's nightblade and Tezzeret, master of the bridge.

You are right for during your opponents turns, but Combat Calligrapher also states whenever ‘A’ player attacks one of your opponents, so this also includes when you attack an opponent on your turn, it creates tokens for you and thus triggering Marnues Calgar. Hope that makes sense!
Doesn't investigate X trigger separately? Like for Ethereal Investigator where it ETBs and you investigate X times where X is the number of opponents. Wouldn't you create a clue token 3 separate times and then get 3 separate Marneus draws?
No, because all the tokens are created by the same ability an Marneus says "one or more tokens", he only sees one token creation instance and triggers only once not caring about the number of tokens, if he said "whenever a token" then he would trigger multiple times
Not budget, but a good reasonable upgrade would be curiosity crafter. you have no max hand size and you draw a card whenever a creature token you control does combat damage.
Probably should add Reliquary tower and/or mind stone, just in cause things go Wild. The deck seems incredible, but I think I will throw a Laboratory Maniac just in case
Well built deck but it saddens me to the core seeing the Chapter Master of the Ultramarine Astartes leading a bunch of critters, weird monsters and low life thugs 😂
Laboratory Maniac is a fantastic and hilarious win condition 😂 just use some jank to have instant speed drops of him and draw out to win in response to them trying to respond after he hits the field 🤣😅🤣

I bought the precon and was looking at upgrading it further with Calgar in the commander seat so this video gave me some great ideas!

I'm surprised that The Council of Four is not added to this list, a cheap card that acts like a great card draw and token engine.
I put council of four in mine, I like the card draw, token gen, card draw in my opponents turns
My advice: Play cards like dark Privilege (sac a creature: Regenerate) to protect your Commander and get death triggers. Con: You got infinite combos
You can even go endless with this commander with training grounds + Ashnods Altar and draw your whole Deck. With Thassas Oracle you can finish the game 👍

I made mine into a more focused astartes tribal build with some human soldiers who are good lol and some good control cards

Yes, each investigate is a separate instant of clue generation, but the treasures all come in at the same time

Ashnods altar Is only like 7 bucks. It plus nadir kraken and commander can go infinite, and easy lab maniac or jace maniac can just have you win.

Why you put that many trash cards in a good deck? Tapped rocks for 2? Reef worm? Really? This is not budget, this is inconsistently.
