In the spring of 1971 my 19 year-old self holed up for a few weeks with Tea for the Tillerman. In the late autumn of that year I added Mona Bone Jakon, and over the Christmas season tossed Teaser and the Firecat onto the pile. By now I was just turned 20, and out of all the magic songs bestowed upon me by these three majestic records, Kathmandu became my personal favorite. By then I was a guitar and piano player, bounced around many of Cat's tunes, but I was far too much a Bob Dylan soundalike to get away with any decent renditions. By the way, I recall that my introduction to the Cat as a 16 year-old came along in January of 1968 when a curious little bauble graced my transistor radio and caught my attention: A little thing called "Kitty." Going from that to Tillerman 3 years later was a great journey. One other thing. The one song from back in those days (on Catch Bull at Four - 1972) that still grabs me for all kinds of unexplainable reasons, is Kansas City Nightmare. The vulnerability and humility in it just never has let up. A sort of helpless dance with reality. The mark of an amazing songwriter.
This masterpiece is timeless, and I love this piece today as much as I did in the 80's. Recently learned how to play this on the guitar and can now really appreciate the melody even more. Thank you Cat for this gift to humanity! :)
Dear sir, when i was a schoolchild, my teacher used to play us your music. As young children we were a bit baffled by it all but i felt somewhere deep inside me there was meaning here, i just couldn't quite grasp it. However as an adult now i believe he was preparing us for our adult futures with the insight you had. Your music and lyrics genuinely bring tears to my eyes. The honesty and ability to express your life journey at any stage, absolutely remarkable. Incredible actually. You have touched so many people the world over with your genuine, emotional honesty. May you always find what you seek. And may what you seek always find you. Your lyrics, are incredible. Your experiences are unique however also able to be related to. Your willingness to expose your vulnerability, breathtakingly admirable. May you always walk in the light of your own self beliefs. May your family and yourself always prosper in all ways in the things that actually matter. The things no one can tell us but somehow deep inside we know yet can't fathom. May you please, know you changed the world for the better.
Dear Person ~ What a most exquisite letter of love and gratitude to the immensely gifted lyricist, poet & musician, Cat Stevens. I am deeply moved by your heart-written sentiments. All the best. Joanne
Flute adds a mysterious element to this nearly perfect song. So simple...so haunting. The sense of spiritual revelation is perfectly expressed in the tinkling prayer bell chime on the glockenspiel or whatever that instrument was...Cat's best songs were like undiscovered nursery rhymes from the cosmic collective unconcious we've always known the words to.
Basanta Kumar Gautam Oh beautiful One ~ if that is so, then go and walk in that ancient city and toss flower seeds and smile. That will be a start. There is a power in that.
After first hearing this song it actually inspired me to see Katmandu. Finally made it there in 1976

Hello to 2029
Great song! But Kathmandu is no longer beautiful. It has been turned into an unplanned, ugly and polluted chaotic concrete jungle.

Basanta Kumar Gautam agreed
@@joannemarie1371 unfortunately time passes by .life starts to fade away and the friendly city turns to a city with great sorrows.
Islands of beauty remain! Oasis in the desert...
Ancient city world heritage still alive thats known as ktm
Satan's tree. Well now....
