True then you wont need a performance tire.
On Tirerack under specifications you can find the country of origin, so that may be helpful.
...watch the date tyre made too. It's on the sidewall as well.
yes
Scotty, I'm listening. My uncle like you has been a mechanic for over 50 years. I've found his knowledge very useful. Keep up the good work
That '78 Lincoln probably gets the same fuel mileage as a cement truck. I once had a '75 with a 460 CID V-8 that averaged about 10 MPG.
Years ago a neighbor finally got rid of her Pontiac Catalina. It was replaced with a Toyota Starlet. She thought it was broken because the needle on the fuel gauge didn't seem to move the first week.
Jeffrey Kein I've had cars before where the gas gauge would have a race with the speedometer .
John Young this is killing me 😂
My cement truck gets 11 MPG (loaded)
10? I'd say you're doing good!!!
Also don't forget to check the tire date codes. Tires that look good can be old and brittle.
i tell people that all the time, like tires are like loaf of bread, they do expire and get old. and sure enough a person buys 4 new tires and spends 700 dollars and 3 months later, they say, OMG look at these tires all cracking all over the place.
I bought my parents 05 Neon, when they no longer needed it. It was eleven years old with 36K mikes. I drove it 2K miles back to Florida, where I really got a chance to check it out. Two of the tires were the originals.
@@robertheinkel6225 does that mean they worked fine? Or you were surprised they worked?
agree ... I buy used tires for cars I flip .. and for customers .... I will not buy any tires over 5 years old ... I care about my customers safety ... only time I will use tires like that or the china tires ... is for work trailers ... that will NEVER be used on the roads ... only low speed transports around the work yard .. or to the parts boneyard after 5 years .. you risk a catastrophic failure at road speed ...
So true! My '15 Accord Sport came with Eagle LS tires. Within 20.000 miles they started to rot. Deep cracks across the tread and I could actually flick little pieces of rubber off the tread with my key!

*vigorous knee-slapping ensues*
I bought a Linglong Crosswind for my spare. I was very surprised with how well it was made. It looked just as good as my cooper at3 xlts. And is actually more true to size.
I was on a tight budget and bought 4 Comforser tires. Going on a year with them. I must say I’m quite pleased with them. No problems whatsoever. And they are equally as good as the Bridgestones I replaced if not better. I’d buy them again in a heartbeat.
Here's the lowdown on Walmart tires. I work there in the Auto Care Center. I deal with them everyday.
First off, Walmart actually contracts with several tire manufacturers to make Walmart Exclusive models of tires in the regular manufacturer lines. Walmart uses Goodyear, General and Kelly tires for a lot of their tire lines. Those tires aren't always available at the regular dealerships, only Walmart.
In the Goodyear line, Walmart has the Viva 3 series of tires, comparable to the Goodyear Integrity and Assurance lines. For the truck tires, Walmart carries the Wrangler Trailmark, similar to the Trailrunner line, and the Wrangler Authority, similar to the Duratrac line.
In the General line, Walmart has the General Exclaim HPX line, which is one that is available at a regular General dealership, and in the truck line, the General Grabber STX.
Then for the slightly off brands, Walmart offers the Douglas All Season, and the Douglas Performance tires, which are manufactured by Kelly-Springfield Tire, a sister company to Goodyear. These 2 tires are Walmart's economy tire line, are usually a very good value and tend to hold up quite well for economy tires, particularly the Douglas All Season. It even gets around quite good in the winter. I have 2 minivans, and I have the Douglas All Season on both vans year around.
For the economy truck tire, Walmart offers the Dextero DHT2 line. It's strictly a highway tire, not intended to be used off-road. It could be driven off-road if the conditions are good.
With the exception of the Dextero line, the rest of Walmart's tires for the most part, are manufactured in the USA, though some specific tire sizes may be made in other countries. The Dextero is made in Korea, but some of the sizes are now made in the USA.
Do some quality control issues happen with Walmart's tires, yes they do occasionally pop up. That can happen with any tire. We have specific criteria to deal with them. If a tire results in what could be a manufacturers warranty issue, we can replace it. Usually they will show up early in the tire's life, like a bulge that develops within a month or 2 on the sidewall. Not to be confused with undulation which happens on most tires. It's where the 2 ends of the inner tire liner are joined together during the assembly process, and a slight inward bulge appears. That's strictly a result of the manufacturing process, doesn't affect the operation of the tire, and is strictly cosmetic. A bulge is a very blatant outward protrude of the rubber on the sidewall. It looks like a boil on the sidewall when it happens. That means something on the inside of the tire failed and separated. If you are uncertain, take your vehicle back to Walmart to confirm if it's a bulge or undulation.
If the tires seem to be wearing out much sooner than you would expect or seem to have less miles on them than they should for the mileage warranty, then they may be replaced under the manufacturers warranty.. Please remember that uneven wear in the tread, more on one side and less on the other is usually going to be an alignment issue with the vehicle, and not a warranty covered issue. It's best to have your vehicle aligned IMMEDIATELY after you have new tires installed. Your spending a lot of money on tires, so it's best to ensure your vehicle's alignment is correct to maximize the usage of your tires. If it's out of alignment, your tires will last dramatically less and it's going to come out of your own pocket to replace them. Proper alignment, proper tire pressure, and regular rotation will ensure you get the most out of your tires.
Honda’s 2.4 L does have the VTC actuator issue.... Which they never recalled... I’ll probably be getting my first Toyota for my next car.
My Element had that, at about 200k miles. And it was an easy, cheap fix on my driveway.
Also the oil burning issue on early k24s my accord burned 1 w qt every month and half

Bought $400 tires from Walmart for a car that I drive o my 5 miles to work. Those thing vibrated so much. Took them to get rebalanced and same problem. Never buy cheap tires!
Probably not a tire issue as much as a Walmart doesn't have a proper wheel balancing setup.
why not check the suspentions.

Yeah so true. I use to have super slim sport tires on 20 inch bmw rims and they were so smooth lol I drove 140 with a dead flat and didn’t feel it but then which to these bigger tires on 18 inch rims and it feels like it shakes way so much more
On point on the cooling fan. It happened to me the fan lost contact and the engine overheated when after driving in the highway and stopped in a stoplight
Perfect timing Scotty. Today I just bought my new set of tires. They're the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring. Not a lot of reviews on them so I decided to try them. First impressions, they're quiet and comfy. The handling is not bad either.
Every set of Coopers I have ever seen got flat spots from sitting and had poor grip.
That means that they rode lumpy untill they warmed up if the vehicle sat for a few days, and the tread hardly wore out because they didn't stick to the road well.
@@puppykicker6701 I'm an Uber driver so I'm always moving and if I ever have any issues I have good warranty coverage. Cooper's 70,000 mile warranty and Discount Tires' road hazard warranty. I'll reply to you if I have any troubles.

Yes, please do.
@@puppykicker6701 Want to give you an update on the tires and compare them to my previous ones. No issues yet. The previous tires were the Bridgestone Ecopia EP 422 plus on my 2017 Mazda3. These Cooper CS5s are so much better. The Ecopia is a harder compound. It's for lower rolling resistance. The Coopers are quieter, have better handling and comfortable. My Coopers were also made this year.
@@kaziklombax2126
A harder compound will also last longer.
This is fine on trucks, and low performance cars, but loses its appeal when they don't stick to the road well.
I have had some experience with General tires, and found them to be similar to the tires on a Hot Wheels car- hard as a rock, wont wear out, and won't stick to anything.
They also hydroplaned very badly.
My last set of Kelly's didn't lose traction until worn to the treadwear indicators and in freezing rain at 60 MPH.
55 MPH was ok, but right at 60 it would get squirrelly.
I still love Kelly tires, but they are hard to find around here.
I have altimax rt43 tires made by General. Have been my favorite set of tires I've purchased in the last 10 years. 75k tread life, allegedly, so we'll see. 2 years ago I bought some cheap lexani tires, not sure who makes them, but they only lasted 20k miles. General's were around $101 a piece, Lexani's were $58 a piece lmao. Lesson learned.
I got General tires from Walmart for my 2001 Subaru Outback and I haven't had a problem with them.
As did I. Never had any issues. All Walmart tires are from China.
I got General Exclaim HPX A/S at Walmart for a Focus and they seem fairly comparable to Michelin Premier A/S I had previously. $80 each, USA-made. Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest of the cheap.
Scotty, like you said common sense, some people let it go in one ear and out the other and regret it, and some listen and learn from it. Thank you for your sharing your knowledge about cars.
According to the thumbnail I should not touch my tires at all, thank you Scotty, very cool
I've purchased 4 sets of Chinese tyres in the past 12 years and I do an average of 20k Kilometers per year. They have been amazing and will continue to buy them.
same here!
I bought 1 set of GoodYear Assurance tires 4 years ago. I have traveled over 60,000 miles. The tires are still good for another 10,000 miles.
Chinese tyres? Whats that?

Jaguar is my favorite brand.I can't help it.Never had engine or transmission problems with the XKR I got.Other cars i had, loved giving me engine bay problems where im under the hood every 6 months to a year
I just bought a car with Douglas (Walmart/Sam's house brand) tires. At first they seemed a bit hard, but okay. Now that we are in monsoon season wet traction, especially on acceleration, definitely leaves something to be desired.
Odd since Douglas tires are owned by goodyear
Great video Scotty. Thanks for making this world a better one.
Scotty no matter how much good info you share with people remember that for some people common sense isn't so common.
yup last week i got a girl and her husband that drove to my shop and they said the car was pulling to the right really hard, they had a totally flat tire with the rim on the ground, OMG, if they had just stopped. all it needed was the screw removed and plugged, but Noooooo. they kept driving it flat and killed the tire good.
@E. Hernandez _ So true, and where the common sense is missing assholes become abundant.
I bought a used Highlander in February. Early on, it didn't drive the best. I had it aligned and that helped a little. I replaced the tires from China with Michelins and it drives totally different now. It's a keeper.
Scotty,
I have a 2011 Toyota Corolla Sport. What do you think about the engine? It seems to not have that much of an 'umph' compared to our 2008 Honda CRV (which we hands down love!) I know both are built differently, but both are VVTI's.
Thank you Scotty! Because of your other videos, I sold my Subaru Crosstrek when the transmission went out right below 100k miles (luckily I was below 100K so they covered it under warranty) and bought a used Highlander. I'm so happy! Love that Highlander! My last one went for 250k miles until I had an accident. I was going for 350k. Maybe this time :)
Hey Scotty, I've gone thru 3 sets of China Blacklions on my Acura RSX; each set lasting me about 40k miles. Haven't had any issues with flats or traction.
It’s really going to be hit or miss. I think he just means for the average person as a general rule stay away. I’m sure there are Chinese tires that can be acceptable in quality
Recently had a set of Lexani tires removed. They wore out but were terrific tires, made in Thailand. Then put on Primewell from a Firestone store, worst tires ever, made in China. Had to return them and get actual Firestones, a real tire.
I had a hi-temp issue in a car where the temp would stay in the normal range while driving at highway speeds but would over-heat around town. The fan worked and coolant level was good. It turned out that 2/3 of the radiator was clogged and not passing coolant. Unfortunately, the cooling fan was on the side of the radiator where the radiator was clogged. I ended up moving the fan in front of the radiator where it could be placed to move air through the part of the radiator that still worked, reversed the +/- leads so the fan would "push" air through the radiator as it was now in front of it. Amazingly it would still cool the engine with so little of the radiator functioning.
I had a 2012 Acura TL, now with 130,000 miles. Great V6 engine. The only thing that ever broke was a headlight which burned out (at 80,000 miles). Changing the timing belt (and of course the fuel pump while you're there at 100K was the most expensive maintenance job. I also flushed the transmission fluid (before I gave it to my brother).
Guess you meant WATER pump instead of Fuel pump change w/belt at 100K
@@h.e.miller3710 yes, you're correct.
I think the biggest reason people ignore sound advice is that they are driven by aesthetics. I've had two Pontiac vibes and now a matrix. I've found the Buick Encore very attractive, since it looks like a beefed up Vibe, but recently bought the matrix based on your sound advice. I made a pragmatics decision based on value rather than appearance. I even bought a color I hated to get an otherwise great car. Thanks for what you do and entertaining me while you do it.
Last time I checked, the General Tire brand is under the Continental Tire umbrella.
@Justin Vargas _ So? The issue is whether it was made in China or not. He is not talking about brand names.
Good advice. I was looking at some Pirelli Scorpion Verde, made in Brazil. Backordered so I did some searching and found Michelin's new CrossClimate2 - Made in USA. I switched my order and the USA tires will be here two days from now. Looking forward to trying these out. Something to still be said for good made in USA tires.
I Daily drive the 1.5 Ford Fusion ecoboost, change the oil every 7-10k miles with Pennzoil Ultra Plat 5w20 Synthetic. Drives like it’s new. Changed battery once, that’s the only thing done in 100k miles. (115 degree weather)

Hey scotty I saw your last video on fast cars where you recommended the 2018 Honda Civic Type R. What about the Civis Si?
The engine is not the same. The Si its the 1.5, the Type-R 2.0
SW H Scotty is paranoid about turbos, in Europe everyone drives a turbo since 2000s.
Si's have always been garbage for the money. Type R's have always been the model to buy, but until recently Type R's have never been available to American customers. Never settle for the base or mid range model. I've done it twice and always regreted it. Just try and find the top model and if you need to save to afford it, do so and you will thank yourself for the patience. Si's will never be as good as a Type R.
Cody Clark The 2005 Si has The same 2 litter as the type-r
Filipe Silvestre that’s great if you only care about going fast in a straight line. Type Rs are made for cornering.
I've had very good luck with General tires over the years. I buy the higher performance models, but the GMax series are good on my Thunderbird, and I swear by the Altimax Arctic snow tires. Never get stuck in Minnesota snow.
I bought a set of uniroyals not general brand at walmart, still running on my ranger since 06.

Scotty I just heard you on NPR calling Nissans junk during a marketplace segment about their stock dropping dramatically.
Scotty is correct here. Nissan used to build good cars about 30 years ago. Now their build quality is almost as bad as Kia/Hyundai. I am a mechanic. I see it every day.

@@JAM_2024 Honda is not junk. Better designed than Toyota. Both are reliable and will last forever if you do the basic maintenance schedules.
I've had the same issue with tires made by bridgestone, absolute garbage with random leaks and punctures even tho no nails penetrated the tire.
Damn really? I always thought Bridgestone was a semi-premium tire.
on new allwheel vehicles they also have a tendency to cup with only a few thousand miles.
My father loved his Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires. OK, he worked for them for 28 1/2 years. I'm a Michelin guy myself.
Daily drove a 71 duster and it was very reliable. You see the worst cases, not the best cases. Some old cars are just fine. Maybe drip a little oil, so use a thicker oil. Use a high mileage oil and sometimes they'll stop leaking all together. Sometimes a leak can be a very simple fix. Generally, yes old cars can be a pain but depends on how well it's taken care of.
Some of the Chinese tyres are not all bad. Some are reasonable and cost effective. Some are rubbish of course.

Well, I'm more interested in getting a C7 now personally.
The C8 is likely a amazing vehicle, but it's just not the vehicle for me.

As a street car, the Model 3 Performance with the FSD option will be cheaper than all but the most stripped-down C8, have more forward-thinking tech (and free software updates), more cargo room and interior space, and similar 0-60 times.
I and my fiancee have a ‘97 t & c with 213k miles. Even though its had its share of good and bad owners, it still runs and works well. Weve recently started having overheating issues (of which i can fix), but for what its worth, its still cheaper than have a car payment every month. I would think that every vehicle (including toyotas) would start developing issues over years of being driven and that theyre all moneypits to some degree. That said, routine maintenance and making necessary repairs as soon as possible will keep the moneypittedness to a minimum, thats my thoughts.
I love how we went from tires to turbo lol ! Who needs tires !!
I buy general altimax rt 43 they're really good tires 700 AA made in Portugal 65,000 miles warranty 149 mph rating and 135$ a piece can't go wrong.
I had 3 sets of general tires and had no problems with them. I have a set on now. They look good, they ran smooth, and I never got stuck in the snow.
i would suggest doing a coolant pressure test to find the leak other than "just replacing the radiator". it could be the reservoir or on of the hoses or something internal.
tires are best on tire4coin
Love the pictures!😂
my key thing has always been... quality tires, quality brakes, and bright highlights.
Ford should bring back the New - Pinto Station Wagons in 2020 .
My brother had an orange one. It was a great car.
You made me smile! Great message... God loves you.
I've had my 03 Town & Country for 13 years & although they don't have a reputation for being reliable it has never caused me anything but minor problems & has never let me down but, I have also serviced it myself being a mechanic for almost forty years. Original engine, trans etc. I never had to replace anything major, just usual service items & last year it got it's first tune up at 270,000 km, or 168,000 miles, touch wood.
I've always been told that you buy Jaguars in pairs..
Yeah to replace the one that you wrapped around a signpost 🤣
@@devnotes00 Everyone knows that Jaguar is English slang for a 94 Toyota Celica.
Be sure to learn how to check the dates on every Tire you purchase! Never buy very old tires, even if they have little or no wear. Recommend avoiding tires that say they are made in china as the quality control isn’t as good as Japanese, American, and Taiwanese tires.
Just wondering Scotty, you've may have answered this but how often should I change the coolant?
Scotty, I just love your videos and I have learned so much from you. Just today I replaced my broken door handle after watching your recent video on how to replace them. The new handle wasn't the right color and it took me two hours, but it's fixed and it works, can't really say that for the rest of the car (06 chevy aveo hatch) lol I actually asked you about scorched cylinders on the same darn car several years ago. If you can believe it, it's still running! Not often, but it does lol.
I stop using deodorant because they became endless money pits.
'Smell me you peasants! smell my presence!'
It's why I didn't have kids.
Bought six new tires from goodyear. Four of the six went bad. Instantly.
I have found GoodYear to be some of the worst.
One good year out of them.
And that is if you are lucky.
Their name says it all.
Yup. Never buy Crapyear!
NASCAR love good year I rather use Hoosier tyres on race cars not crap year
@@Wheresthepepsibismol
Remember that a long nascar race is 500 miles, and requires multiple tire changes.
Scotty, big fan, appreciate what you do. Question, have always bought used cars, usually Hoopdies lol. Coming into some cash and planning on getting a nice used car. Heard your gripes against convertibles but owned one one and are planning on getting another. My choices are boiling down to be a retro thunderbird, an '02- '07 mustang or a BMW Z3 with the straight 6. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
I have Walmart Tries Douglas brand made in the USA. Good tires at cheap price. However getting them installed at Walmart can be a all day adventure.
Michelin makes the best tires but you are going to pay for them
Eh... there's tests that would say otherwise. There was an all season vs all weather vs snow tire comparison recently and the Michelina's were outright dangerous compared to the Bridgestone all seasons and then of course the all weather's and the Blizzak's absolutely destroyed the Michelina's in stopping distance in the snow.
My 2010 Dodge charger rt has 171K. 1 owner .. Original EVERYTHING, if you take care of something it'll last.... Unless it's a fiat 😂
@@spenserchalkley7013 that's good!
Doesn't Fiat own part of Chrysler?
You always get a good laugh when people ignore your advice tho
I've also seen water pumps cause a car to over heat in city driving. At idle or low rpm it wouldn't flow as much, but going down the highway it was fine
