    I got to meet Donna Douglas in NE Ohio about 18 yrs ago. She had a farm close to where I worked and the owner of our factory brought her around. She spent about 30 minutes with me and some co workers just talking. She was a joy and of course I was in love with her from the early 60s.

      Irene Ryan had so little attention toward her non Beverly Hillbillies persona. It was nice to see Irene out of character. I’m 64 and remember Donna Douglass and Irene Ryan and Bob Crane on Password which is a game show that personifies the 1960’s.

    To the PASSWORD youtube channel: how do you leave Donna Douglas out of the written intro?

  • @SenorZorrozzz
    @SenorZorrozzz 3 роки тому +23

    Donna cried like crazy at Irene’s funeral. She collapsed into Buddy Ebsen’s arms and Max Baer moved right in for support. He was clearly shaken over seeing Donna’s being so distraught. There they were, the three of them! Clustered together. Sad. It’s sealed in my memory!
    9 years they worked together. During the summers Donna, Max and Irene toured. They made personal appearances. They had the same managers. They made pretty good money doing this.
    When the series was over Max and Donna didn’t have much money. Each was paid, I believe, about $250 per show during the early years. It many have been Irene who was paid $350, but it may have been Max who was paid that. Irene never wanted to blow the gig by negotiating for more money.
    Buddy was paid , if I remember, $1300 per show in the beginning. That was in 1962, 63.
    When the series ended Max had a plan and he became a success with some work that he didn’t want to do.

    • @mikewynne7131
      @mikewynne7131 3 роки тому +12

      I think Buddy got quite a bit more than the $1300 and the rest of the principles got $500 per show at the beginning. It became an issue. The money raked in by Filmways and CBS was obscene so the actors were pretty well screwed-over. The castmembers did get significant pay raises, but it was a pittance compared to what was paid to actors for #1 shows by the 80'and 90's. That says nothing of residuals, which were generally limited to 4 reruns back then. They all should have been multi-millionaires from that show- but that's the way it was back then. That's why they all did so many game shows and personal appearances back then.

      @@JLee-rt6ve - Chump, you wouldn't know "logic" if you tripped over it. Ludden was not being sexist; its not his personality on the show. He was making reference to the word "tomato" that Donna Douglas had just used in the previous word game. That's YOUR spin that he was making a "sexist"comment; Douglas didn't react as if she took it that way or was offended. You seem more offended than she or anyone else on the show.
      Today, the term is archaic, so its not readily used THIS CENTURY - plenty of other words have taken its place with frequent use THIS CENTURY, such as "bitch" "hoe" and at least a dozen others your mother can educate you about if you want to claim you are too dumb to know them. Women are unfortunately referred to as "bitches" and many other names across today's popular culture and media, but according to your brain, if anyone today were to reach back and resurrect the archaic term "tomato," it would be more consequential than all the "bitches" that permeate across today's media, lol. OK, keep believing that "logic," Skippy. I say in scenarios where the term "bitch" is used in today's media where there are no consequences, then the use of what is widely regarded as a lessor offensive term "tomato" would clearly receive the same no consequences in the exact same scenario. Your "logic" disagrees. That's why Trump talks to you....he too knows all about your "logic." I'll get back to you after say, a year and $5 will get you $10, your "logic" on this issue will be unchanged and unimproved. Good news for Trump, now that he's running again. Keep the oath, brother.

    Donna Douglas was originally from the same city where I've lived all my life: Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She graduated from Redemptorist High School in 1950, was married (for a few years) to a man whose last name was Bourgeois, and was known as Dot Bourgeois before she went to Hollywood and legally changed it to Donna Douglas. She visited my elementary school in the early 1960's; and, naturally, everyone was thrilled. In the mid-to-late 1950's, she dated my best friend's dad. She was a local celebrity.

I watched this during summers and holidays when new, because otherwise it was on tv while I was in school. Popular TV stars of the era were on this. They must have made Irene Ryan look older to play Granny. Her hair is a pretty color on this, and she looks younger.

    I watched a movie called "Auto Focus" the other day, it was based on Bob Crane's rise to fame and his unsolved murder. After seeing Bob Crane on this game show was a lot different from how he was portrayed in the movie. In this show, Bob appears to be happy go lucky whereas in the movie he seemed isolated and tormented. I enjoyed Hogans Heros, it was screened in my country, Australia in the 60s when I was a little kid, so was the Hillbillys. To this day I still watch reruns of both shows, thanks for showing Bob Crane in the fashion of how we should remember him.

      All 3 men came to the U.S.A. and signed up and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After WW2 ended, they went back to their previous jobs as entertainers/musicians. W.K. was a good actor: He played the not-very-bright Col. Klink in a comedy show, and also, he was on an episode of "Perry Mason" and played a very serious character. Years later he was on an episode of Law & Order playing a serious character. {The father of a nutcase that stole women's clothing.}
      As for the yelling Gestapo Major Hostetler(?) (Who wore an SS black uniform) on H.H. that man was/is also of a Jewish family, but he was born in the U.S., and was/is a guitar player/singer.
      I bet that REALLY upset all the Jew-hating, pro-Nazis that watched the TV series.... Four Jewish guys playing Uniformed Nazis in a WW2 setting and always getting outsmarted by the Allied P.O.W.'s. 🙂
