Volkswagen ID Buzz EV Review - Ultimate Surf Wagon or Toy for the Rich?

- I borrowed a Volkswagen ID Buzz to see what all the fuss was about. Did it leave me buzzing or would I rather it buzzed off? Join me for a drive around Worcestershireshire to find out. #EV #electriccars #volkswagen
Their plan is zero cars for the peasants.
Nailed it.
Bullsht. Dont behave childish. Was that same plan with mobile phones of flat TV? Nope, not any more. Everybody has them. You can buy 4K TV for affordable price. Problem is price of batteries. In near future EVs will be cheaper than ICE cars. Stop moaning. 🤷♂️🙈
Work harder.
@@pauladams5673 Shut it you rich-cosplaying peasants.
Classic 2020s WEF-approved EV ridiculousness. Hard to unsee it when you truly do see it.
@@FullFact548 And very happy to be in this deniers club😊
@@FullFact548 because they are just another corrupt organisation
@@FullFact548 the climate's always changing, has done for 4.5 billion years. It's time you learnt that we have to adapt to a changing planet, not adapt the planet to suit us.
@@FullFact548 It's a 2500 kilos EV lugging such amount of weight it was never green and it will never be
I wouldn't be surprised if 30 children died mining this you need to use logic , plus 80kwh just to go 170 miles 🤨🥴
Mrs: could you turn on the A/C darling?
Mr: do you actually want to get home before 1am?
Whether it’s very hot or very cold, using the a/c or heater is going to lower your range. By how much is disputable but it must be at least 10% on average.
Their's 2 electric heater units on a buzz, 1 for battery and 1 for cabin heating, between them they are nearly 20kw !,so yes they will make a difference to range .
I like the idea of a two year wait for the delivery of this. Order it and start the repayment plan now so that when it eventually gets delivered its already paid for so you can flog it for something useful.
Or if you are getting on in years like wot I am, have it full spec but don't start paying until it's delivered and with any luck you will have snuffed it while still owing a wad so your kids get it paid for by the payment protection plan.
Imagine an E Dub Fest....hahahaaaa
Brilliant thinking, if you get the timing right, your kids could deliver you to the funeral home in the back
@@grahambedford5953 Great idea. Even more reason to buy one. Would save the Co-op Undertakers fees. Lots of space for the flowers too. I wonder if Geoff knows a good signwriter to personalise it.
@@Jonny_The_Organism oh god, like comparing hairdryers 🤣🤣
If this was a van with a diesel or a petrol hybrid and was half the price then it would be worth it at its best
I am thinking the same. I think the original prototype was going to have both a hybrid or full electric option.
Moron
@ £60-£70K, IT AINT A FAMILY CAR FOR YOUR AVERAGE WORKING FAMILY, but they don’t want the average working family to have a car anyway. P.S. at 3tons loaded, shouldn’t it VED atleast be £300 to pay for the wear and tear on the roads.
Imagine it was £10k - would you buy one with its around 100 mile real world range? - even at 1/6th of the price I wouldn't...
A classic VW bus is actually cheaper than the iD Buzzlightyear. I would buy a classic any day over this as long as it still has its original engine and not a EV conversion.
@@bentullett6068 But is it ULEZ :(
@@DigiDriftZone yes apparently the cameras can't pick up the old school black and silver number plates.
Pay per mile is on the way no road tax
Much better use of space than an electric SUV, I like it
Hi Geoff Glad you keep mentioning the mining issue and the child labour that allows it to happen . Seems many people are very selective when they say how good these EVs are in supposedly saving the planet . And assuming they do get their way and make everyone have electric cars , what cost will it have on those who are expected to provide the materials . Thank you for not turning a blind eye to this issue . Best wishes as always 😀👍👍👍
Great video as usual.
They don't want you to own anything that's why they are all so expensive
@@FullFact548 capitalism failed, but they don’t want us to know that yet. Capitalism needs constant growth and new entrants to the system - falling populations can’t sustain capitalism indefinitely
@@GeoffBuysCars Nice to hear someone say it - capitalism has completely failed. It's now a society where the rich just milk the poor to keep up the illusion that it's still working. We're in an extreme phase of capitalism where profit and growth are more important than anything else, and where war, famine and children mining minerals for Mr Rich Western Man to smugly drive around in his £70k EV are deemed acceptable. Hypocracy beyond belief.
Now do a review of the original VW Bus
General,
You wanna try being in a fully freighted modern artic @ 44t gvw when it thinks it's gonna rear end something even though its not.
The thing bangs on 12 enormous air operated disc brakes bigger than your volvo wheels including the tyres while alarms going off and the whole dash and reflection in the windscreen goes red. Even worse while in the rain and going round a bend. 🤬😡
If that buzz box gave you palpitations an angry artic would make you identify as a woman and give birth 😵💫😂🤣😂
Gr8 vid as always and a true summary of modern crap. 👍👏👏👏
Wow… terrifying
Your bang on. Toys for rich twats, just to drive to there holiday homes. And price everything out for the locals. There's a hell of a lot of Surf beaches here in Australia. Haven't seen one charging point at any of them... I'll keep my 2003 V8 disco. Thanks. Looks better as well. Cheers Geoff. Cracking!
"There's a hell of a lot of Surf beaches here in Australia. Haven't seen one charging point at any of them" Long may it stay that way!
The elephant in the room is you can buy a classic VW camper or bus for the same price as this restored just as long as no one has EV converted one as classic EV conversions are ridiculous prices. I saw one of the EV converted classic Mini's at £60,000 whereas a fully restored classic Mini was around the £9,000-£20,000 mark
Geoff you would probably spend more time waiting for and then charging the Buzz on your way to the beach than you would spend surfing!
You can’t beat a bit of roundabout bashing…. Motorbike bit of fun that car driver love too👍
My mate has ordered one....and yeah he's fucking minted.
He'll sell it in a few months when he realises it's unusable :)
Best vw van is the syncro t3 with a tdi conversion.
But the Mitsubishi Delica is better...
A 35 year old vw will always be better than some hideous jap monstrosity!
Sorry Geoff, for £60,000 , I'd get the Original VW bus , it's ultra cool 😎 and it's neaver going to lose money, only go up 👆, I can't stand E,V,'s you can keep the lot ! Keep up the good work Sir 👍🏻😎 p,s, you had me in stichis laughing when you said just need a big knob 😂 classic
VW California 6.1 Beach Camper, OTR brand new, just over £60k , it'll probably last a lot longer than that ID Buzz too! 😉
Can you pair the surf board to the van via Bluetooth?
ha! good one! some people will probably try.
What a great article ! I drive a 74 VW Bus. 8500 km to the arctic circle; no problems -- can this 2.5 tonn monster do that ?? -- for 68.000 pounds ??
Electric seats are so you don't have to keep adjusting the car seat if the car is being driven by two people. These and an electric tailgate make very little difference to the cars range.
Until they go wrong and make a big hole in your bank account!
@@johndrake3731 Warranty?
This is crazy, Im a middle earner £55k and can't afford something like this. Not an extravagant spender, have a smallish mortgage etc etc.
So what am i doing wrong if everyone else can afford this?
Electric seats work perfectly in a 15 minute city
not a bad looker to drive around your open prison 😊
Another boat boss, I think this car is so cool
thank god its 2 years waiting ..that makes me have similar feelings to those who ordered one !!!!
at least until midles 2025
Stupid air conditioning controls. Really annoying. And yes, nobody needs electric seats with heavy motors and wiring designed to fail, same for the tailgate. I have an electric one too and a simple manual one is easier and quicker. However, people, who are very fashion conscious don’t forget, tell themselves they need these things. Give it properly engineered heating controls and a four hundred mile range, at a sensible price with fast charging, and I might be interested. Until then it’s a toy.
The X bus (if it ever materialises) is half the price and I believe doesn't use cobalt in the batteries
The obvious successor to an old split screen is an old t4 or t5
...that sliding door even sounds like those of the 1970s 😂
What manufacturers fail to understand: With the current technology electric vehicles are restricted to be short-range runabouts. What they'd be replacing is little cars like Corsas, Citroen C1, Micras and the likes, and they'd have to be priced competitively. But that is the segment that doesn't yield huge margins, so here we are...
Great stuff 👌👌
FYI refining oil is a much larger use of cobalt than batteries
Have you got any stats on that? I’d like to put this one to bed, one way or the other
@@GeoffBuysCars It's difficult to get accurate figures. The oil industry doesn't want to reveal it's trade secrets.
The EV crowd and 77th Brigade blow a fuse when you ask them where and how the EV batteries are eventually recycled. They claim the newer batteries will last a very long time or can be used to store power for your home (😅). Some recycling initiatives are in place but will have very low volume, my bet is that the batteries will end up in Bangladesh Central Landfill Facility (No.2), the No.1 Facility is full of all the iPhone and IPad batteries which cannot be recycled.
Loads for sale on autotrader. 70k and drive it away.
Wonder what the waiting list for a 2009 C4 Picasso is these days!
I swear that boat just goes back and forth on the river just so it gets on your videos.
It is a pretty much an obvious WEF vehicle - designed to be out of reach of the peasants. Surprised they haven’t got them ferrying the gimps into Davos but no, they will stick to their S-Classes and Range Rovers. The Buzzz is the anti-christ of cars to me. Amazing when they don’t tell you how much carbon was released when making this ridiculous thing…. Good review though as always Geoff.
Modern wagons have the same saftu system. If you're following a car turning left an you don't put your foot on the brakes, it brakes for you???
The van itself is fabulous, except for two things; the stupid overcomplicated touchscreen, and the equally stupid ev drivetrain. Apart from that, it's terrific. But I'll stick with the good old T2 thanks all the same.
Yup, that's my whole review ha ha
I’ve no idea. But. But. But. It’s a great design. The only I.D I like !!!!!!!!
Regards the Citroen xsara picasso I’d prefer a vw touran, same sorta space but follows the vw line and good prices too
I have a T6, this interests me NOT, not even slightly. I’m in the ‘600 club’, the Transporter owners who have their engines re-mapped which gives you over 600 miles to a full tank.
In my street of less than 40 houses there are 5 Transporters, I have 3 kids under 10, they’re unbeatable for prams, bikes scooters etc. Funny you mentioned the Picasso, talking to my neighbour yesterday, he had one prior to his T6, he had it for years and loved it
Can you do a range test on the motorway at 75mph? - I wonder if it makes it to 100 miles!
Ah, someone tried: ua-cam.com/video/SZnwB4luUE4/v-deo.html -- he got 158 miles running it all the way to 0. So let's say it's 3 years old and lost 15% of range and you don't want to run it to 0% (10-90%) - yep, around 100 miles range (but again unless you love living in range anxiety land, subtract 30-40 miles from that!).
@@DigiDriftZone now try it in the winter, EV database says 145 miles on a motorway. Without the 15 miles left in reserve for that broken rapid charger, you now have a true cold weather range on the motorway of 130 miles to avoid being stranded.
@@stevezodiac491 That's right, before you factor in the battery degradation. The 130 miles is the best you'll ever get on a brand new car, you can quickly shave 15% off that and you're down to 110.
@@DigiDriftZone Why would it lose 15% of capacity in 3 years?
@@Richard482 that’s the average battery degradation in the first 3 years, after that it tapers off and the annual battery capacity loses become lower but at 8-10 years there is usually something like 20-25% less capacity than you started with.
Reluctantly, I'll agree it looks ok from the outside, and the interior is ok too, but only 5 seats in a car that size and for THAT price. Just awful. The infotainment system is also terrible (and buggy), and the haptic touch controls will drive you mad. It doesn't have great range either, and isn't as practical as the original. Infact, on VW's Buzz config page, with a few moderate additons (inc split paint), it was no trouble getting the price up to £74k for the 'Style' version, which is almost £1k per month on a PCP with a £5k deposit. Just crazy.
How often do you have more than 5 people in your car dimwit!
I'd have been impressed if it had a"Cool my balls" option in the A/C.
My car has that, seriously, it has heated AND chilled seats 💯
Electric seats run off the 12v battery - Not the HV battery….
Two things that need fixing: Lower road noise at highway speeds and a nicer interior.
I had a VW LT28 Ithink thats its name it had a flat screen 3 people in the front 5 in the back plus sink and cuboards ,it sank in every camp sight i went in and thats when i lived in Tuanton , Now i live in Manchester with my E38 Mint so mint No fields Lots off Concreete ,GUY Doesnt buy cars I love My 1999 E38 ,Its was in a show room 2 years Going round on a plate. It would be great if it was fitted with a PD engine and it could run on cooking oil.
No it wouldn't
There is nothing I hate more on a car, than an iPad that just looks like its been glued onto the dash, so ugly, so lazy and the dumbest way of controlling the functionality of a car, where no one should be staring at a screen full of menus when trying to drive a car. How did every single manufacturer go from nicely integrated scenes, so glued on iPads all at the same time?
I'm intrigued as to what operations you perceive requires staring at a screen full of menus to operate functionality, while driving the vehicle?
the heat my feet and the other heater options should be customisable
The wife works in a bank and chats with all the customers. All the ones with electric vehicles are looking to sell them. Just doesnt work here in rural northern ireland.
Its way too expensive to be what the ideal is, but i'm not sure about your range complaint.
I'd definitely want a 30 min break at some point in 250 miles (maybe more than one), so it probably isn't a problem in any real world situation.
I mean, this thing can (theoretically) go from Sheffield to Edinburgh on a single charge, but you'd never need to. I personally would like to have lunch at some point in a 5 - 6 hour drive
I did Porthleven to Worcester yesterday without a stop, plus I don’t think it would make that distance. I need to get a longer test drive,

But being a vw it will cost a fortune in repairs i have never seen a vw audi group car with out a ton of warnings on the dash ,if it was a hybrid then i would of liked it more but i do not like the electronic dash or that massive centre screen .I would rather have an old vauxhall zafira .

Yeah the Felicia Pick Up called the 'Fun!'
Staffordshire to Falmouth is 312 miles, best time we’ve done it in is 4 3/4 hrs approximately excluding 1 comfort break say 10 mins, how much time would I have to spend charging the thing/looking for a working charger? No thanks, my awd Merc with 2*1 diesel did 47*77mpg last time fully loaded, no contest especially as we went down & back on one tank of fuel.
3 stops of around 1.5 to 2 hours each :) - those stops will cost you 1.8x the price of diesel as motorway chargers are INSANELY expensive (excluding snacks!). It's ironic isn't it that you'll spend more time charging than you do driving in your diesel. You also don't want to go over 70mph or that could mean a 4th charging stop!
Used to do Birmingham to Falmouth a LOT, best car was the Mondeo 2.2 TDCi but the one I did it mos tin was the Peugeot 306 1.9 DTurbo. Good times. Wee stop at Exeter, but that was it!
If they put a petrol or diesel engine in it, I would consider buying one.

...and I'm a bit of a hippie...but.... v dubs we're not for me....they're way too small.... says he who made a home out of a Suzuki SJ 413 Samurai for 30 months...
Just looked at this video and you said
That it was £600000 but in video you also sead 75000 pounds +2 year whaet
VW have seriously missed a trick with this vehicle. It is a practical and very good looking thing but at £60K+ is only going to sell in small handfuls to smug middle class virtue signaling twats. With a 2.0 diesel and at a third of the price, I dare say that it would sell in millions - I would certainly seriously consider one. As the overpriced pointless electric thing it actually is, no.
Tons of charging points in Cornwall of Course.
Perfect "wannabe surfer" vehicle for rich londoners!!! You have to pay 3 grand for your vehicle to take 3 months longer. You're on the limit for Newquay from Worcester and EV ranges rarely match the specification. I'll keep my 2 grand passat and put a "cool my feet" label on the AC switch 😂🤣
You dont have to buy the electric seats or the electric tailgate...
All very nice until you need it repaired......and you cant do it for youself......then its junk.
Vw boat looks okay, but prefer a canoo
Now I know I'm biased, but the ultimate surf car in my opinion (not that I'd ever go surfing) would be the Volvo XC90. Seven seats 5 of which fold flat even the passenger seat folds down, though not flat, enough room for a double mattress in the back, and surf boards on the roof. I would review it but Vicki Butler Henderson did it for me, my actual car. 😁 ua-cam.com/video/A6bUGyqppyQ/v-deo.html
Nice looking car but it's electric. They catch on fire and have little to no resale value.
Hava you got the statistics for how many catch on fire?
@@djtaylorutube Yeh, search for EV fires Melbourne, they burn down 1 house per week at the moment. Sure, there are way more ICE fires, but they are due to an accident on the motorway, they aren't spontaneously catching fire in the middle of the night and burning your house down. This problem will only increase as older batteries start to fail and due to the authorised repair costs, they are repaired by less careful third parties.
@@djtaylorutube Have a look what happened to electric vehicles during hurricane Ian in Florida. I recently had a Tesla given to me for a drive, the interior console caught on fire, the central locking engaged and I was trapped. Fire dept. got me out but they could not put out the flames. It actually melted. EVs? Not on your F.....g life.
@@bazcar22 yes which is why I asked if you had the statistics. Let me help ... Here's a paste from USA Today that reported on the 11, yes 11 EVs.
"Social media posts claiming EVs catch fire "often" overstate the problem, say experts.
Collier county, which includes the city of Naples, had 2,490 electric vehicles registered as of July 2021, said Stan Cross, electric transportation policy director for the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.
That would mean a fraction of a percent of the EVs in the county caught fire after the flooding.
In Lee county, where Sanibel Island is located, there were 2,683 EVs registered last year. The one EV that burned there would mean less than 0.04% of the electric vehicles in the county caught fire. "
Nor were you trapped in the Tesla, you use the manual door release but it makes a good story no?
@@DigiDriftZone yes the Melbourne articles highlight the problem of Light Electric Vehicle batteries, which are those in scooters, e bikes and similar.
Easy to confuse with cars. :)
lets say you go surfing in your car with a roof rack, you and the mrs. lets say 15 weekends a year. bed and breakfast hotel, 250 for 2 nights. Do the math, that around 16 years of staying in a hotel with a shower, nice bed and a tv etc. before you get to the 63k spent. Buy an estate car instead and you can still use it as your main car. Toy for the rich or those wishing to be kool at any price but not so really.
Exactly right.
The ID Buzz charges 10-80% in 28mins, so no you wont spend ages charging the car.
How often can you boost charge though, talking to a Volvo EV owner recently he told me only 2 x fast changes/week is allowed, or you’ll kill the battery…………..
@@cerealkiller4248 "While there is research that shows that frequent rapid (DC) charging can somewhat degrade the battery quicker than AC charging, the effect on battery heath is very minor. In fact, DC charging only increases battery deterioration by about 0.1 percent on average.
Treating your battery well has more to do with temperature management than anything else, as lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are sensitive to high temperatures. Luckily, most modern EVs have built-in temperature management systems to protect the battery, even while fast charging. "
Why is it a stupid idea to have an automated tailgate?
Love having it on my car 😁
It uses valuable battery, adds weight and adds electrical complexity, and is more expensive to fix it it breaks
Doesn't seem to affect my range 😕 have you got evidence that it isn't a negligible amount?
The claim has novelty but ultimately feels more comical than an engineers perspective.
I’m a big vw fan , just sold my t1 , the buzz is over priced, x bus for me
Volts - Wagen, NO THANKS! 69 Volkswagen T1, YUP.
If only it was running on petrol or diesel😂
Over a grand for a new set of tyres!? And you WILL be changing them often as the vehicle is so much heavier than it’s ICE equivalent.
£63-67k for a vehicle that’s in effect, no different to a Vauxhall Zafira, but without the 7 seats!? Not big enough to be a VW camper. That slot has already been filled by the VW Transporter.
Conclusion: This vehicle is for rich fashion victims that don’t need to go very far!
Not saving the planet, just another impractical, hugely expensive virtue signalling opportunity!

That is a brilliant comment.
Your rightno sensible land owner is going to want to go through that
funny you should state that last month I went to Statfold Barn Railway near Tamworth and they parked everyone on a field. On said day the heavens open all day and the field car park soon turned into mush and many cars were being towed out by one modernish diesel tractor and two classic Ford tractors. The people on car park attendant duty did actually ask if I had a EV as they were rescuing more EV's than internal combustion cars, as the weight of them had caused them to sink and the motors couldn't exactly pull themselves from the mud. My little petrol hatchback escaped with no assistance at all and I thought it would get stuck due to its low profile tyres.
The way the video started I was starting to wonder whether the original Geoff had been replaced by some sort of clone, luckily it all worked out in the end. Just off to check what the max vehicle weight you can drive on a car licence is?
