I was searching what size battery would work best for a 12v trolling motor, because I recently bought a Minn Kota Endura C2 45 lb thrust trolling motor for my 14ft aluminum fishing boat, and I mistakenly hooked it up to the starter battery for my 25 horsepower Mariner outboard motor. In my haste to try it out, I never looked up if I could use a regular car battery on my trolling motor.
Turns out, you shouldn't.
It worked, but it could have damaged my starter motor, and I realized later after reading on Reddit that it is better to use a deep-cycle 100-amp hour marine battery rather than a starter or car battery.
It is also very important to charge a deep cycle marine battery with the right kind of battery charger. it benefits from a higher amperage at the beginning, and then a maintaining air bridge when it is completely charged. I'll also be adding a video comparing this sealed lead acid (SLA) battery to a Lithium Ion Trolling Motor with similar specs.

Glad it helps. Just keep in mind that the lithium ones are probably going to be a better choice, but they are way more expensive.
@@JasonSipe16 yeah i was actually thinking that. I have a Bote Tandem Kayak. I also bought an Amazon mount for inflatables. What would you prefer for a waterproof box and which lithium battery/charger? I did look at the Minn Kota Battery Power Box but think it might be too big for a lithium? I’d like to try to be light as much as I can so I can still go fishing with some added weight on the way back.
Honestly, I'm not sure if those battery boxes would work with the lithiums or not.
@@JasonSipe16I saw that people submitted reviewed for the Minn kota power box and its compatible with lithium. Just need to be cautious if it’s anything higher than 60ah, it won’t be compatible
I have been using a Ever Start 109 amp hours, for my 55 lb Minkota duramax. It runs a very long Time, due to digital Endura Motor low Drain. Very good Point, don't use a regular car battery.

I doubt I will be able to master the spot lock function, but definitely shooting for remote steering and speed controls
Am I correct that you don’t have a fuse or switch in between the battery and trolling motor?
You're correct. At the time I bought this, I was just learning about my trolling motor, so I don't have a fuse on this specific setup. I now have a fuse box, and an emergency kill switch in a waterproof battery box.

On low how long do u think id last ? Also can u put a link for it ?
Well, the savings for battery on one of these Minn Kota isn't much better on low as it is on high. Everlast are available only at walmart, I believe. I can't seem to find them on Amazon

Why shouldn’t you use a regular car battery?
Because the way a deep cycle battery is used for a trolling motor for extended periods of time is different than the high amperage needs of a starter battery.
How long does the battery last?
I had it on High for over an hour. It's about 100 amp hours

Have you seen or tried one of the lithium batteries? I am thinking about getting one but want to hear what others have experienced.
I don't have one yet, but I have also been lightly researching them.
