AMD Crossfire vs NVIDIA SLI as Fast As Possible
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 бер 2014
- NVIDIA SLI technology can be confusing, but this video should help you understand the basics in just a few minutes!
One thing I missed in the video (thanks Yoinkerman) is that SLI works in windowed mode, while Crossfire does not.

Linus should submit photos of himself to Shutterstock's "unibrow" category.
Can't. Unsee.
Damn you!

Also Crossfire is a much cooler name
tottaly agree
+Borhan Uddin Oh, I'm late. I bet they ran out. Guess I won't be clicking that link now.
Kabir Pankaj oh boy here we go amd fanboys
I have a quick question, can you crossfire a sapphire rx 580 with a sapphire rx 560? Is it possible?
Alex C yes you can becouse they share the same gpu core
laughed so much at his Xbone example.
I did too.
LOOOOL!!...That XBOX Joke will forever be in the history of tech and gaming... i wasnt expecting LOL..WOW! Thats was indeed a good, it really burns XD!
"Xbone"
LMAO...that Xbox One joke cracked me up so hard xD
Nice burn linus @0:46 hahaha
Someone in the comments mentioned that the debate between Nvidia and AMD is similar to the debate between iOS and Android. And while I agree that these debates are most of the time pointless (and usually fought between people who have no idea what the fuck they're talking about), I can't help but notice that in this analogy, Nvidia is obviously the Apple of the GPU world.
dat face
so you're saying NVidia is better than AMD ? I preffer Apple than Android but in this topic I prefer AMD because it's cheaper than NVidia while being in the same class of performance as NVidia.
MarkoPC Stuff android is more expensive and 10 times better
The moto x is the most powerful and best phone in the world
The 6 plus is the 5th
Amd seems to be like Microsoft while Nividia seems to be like Apple.
what
+Andrew S (PCMaster) True
+Andrew S (PCMaster) Please compare AMD to Android and iOS to NVIDIA in that case, that would at least be fairly true. Windows and OS X are both incredibly configurable, while Linux beats them both easily. :D
+Andrew S (PCMaster) than nVidia only allow own nVidia Cable, Power, Monitors, CPU's, Games, OS, and many other things.
also, amd is like android, and nvidia is like ios.
You're basically saying that Nvidia is the Apple of gamers?
any doubt?
#BetterRed
well besides the fact that always have the strongest gpus? i would love to see a amd gpu with in the next year that can beat titan x pascal :)
TheJusticeHobbit the card is out already is called amd radeon pro due and it's the best in market and can beat any card of nvidea and pascal but it costs over 1500$+ you can youtube it..to compare it with gtx 1080.. but they say is meant to be a workstation card and so is pascal ..both cards aren't made for gaming even though they perform awesome
again as i said before the pro due is a dual chip card nvidia has the strongest single chip cards plus the titan xp is almost same performance as the pro due so paying 500$ more is not worth it
Basically crossfire is 10 times better.
Pretty much, also Crossfire has better scaling.
And a cool name.
plus you can always go cheaper with an amd apu processor for the time being and add a graphics card to crossfire with it later on
Iwo Ruuzz Very true
and lets not forget, amd apus are very good so for the time being youll be able to play some triple a titles at low settings, which is good enough considering youre on a budget
Differences in design philosophy:
AMD: Provides great cards for relatively small amounts of money.
NVidia: Requests large amounts of money in exchange for borderline godlike power.
Except they charge 300 dollars more for a card that cant beat the 295x2 which is 2 years old.
+Ryan Sample Nvidia is the Apple of graphics cards. Then AMD is Google. :D
+Ryan Sample except that a $350 r9 390 can now whoop the ass of a GTX 980 that is $500 and yet has twice the vram
check m8
+Josh Lu idk, sometimes nvidia is the better choice, like how the AMD reference cards had those overheating issues, some people just didn't want to risk it, then for cards like the 750ti, it is cheaper than the equivalent performing AMD card
+Professional Hacker Go look up benchmarks. The 390X can't even beat the 980, and you say the 390 does that?
0:50 , laughed my ass of
Burn? that's what would happen if you touched a crossfire Xbox one
While I learned something today. I always wondered why SLI wasn't on low end boards but was on mid-high end boards. I figured it had to do with licensing or SLI requiring something low end boards didn't offer but I never cared enough to check. Now that small mystery is solved. Thank Linus!
You've come a long way, Linus. I like watching these older vids
"Up is higher."
I love you, Linus.
XBOX ONE BURN
The more i research AMD the more surprised i get
They are actually better for consumers
Intel and Nvidia are ripping off customers,
I am getting AMD hardware for my next build definitely
With the GTX10XX and Intel Skylake, I'd be happy over here.
I like AMD much more, as they don't damage the market and consumers, but with the 10xx line, especially their 1050 ti, AMD is far behind.
I am late, but Zen is going to blow Intel out of the water. If the hype is real. I hope it isn't another "RX 480 Ashes of Singularity" incident
News update: nVidia (fuck you that's how you actually type nVidia) has won the gpu wars (at least in terms of stock)
Thats what you have to do when you're 2nd place! Hope theyll get capable high end video cards and processors around soon.
I'm not gonna lie. I love the Xbone burns.
your eyebrows have crossfire
omg i cried with laughter at that comment. Made my day ahaha
Epic Battlefield 4 Videos Here i try to never leave mean comments and i always appreciate his videos. i guess i was just having an overly sarcastic day.
alextheromanian you copied this cause u cant make a joke your self
Suleman Zaidi yeah but the people who see know
THIS HAS BEEN AT 69 FOR _YEARS_ ! I love the internet
Wow, you can Crossfire a card with an APU? I would have NEVER guessed that would be possible!
I'm pretty sure the graphics in AMDs APUs are pretty bad anyway, doubt it will be a good increase in performance. But I guess it makes use of your APU when you add a card, so your APU's graphics isn't just a waste.
Yup. i had a mobo with radeon integrated graphics with it's OWN dedicated memory onboard. For a budget pc is really great; You can have the motherboard + better performance than the intel HD graphics for nearly the same money.
The performance increase obviously isn't as good as nvidia SLi, but my opinion is: At least is better than not having it.
MADD617 Yeah, most APUs are pretty bad anyways and shouldn't be used for more than a outdated workstation. Still, the small performance boost sounds like something that would make it not an entire waste.
I have an AMD A10 6800k APU with an Radeon 7750, but for some reason it won't let me crossfire them... Any tips?
Copy & Paste have you looked it up? what have others said?
"BURN" LOL
Lmfao with the Xbox One burn xD
he has a unibrow
For everybody who want to keep their brain cells:
Don't scroll down!
Reading comments on UA-cam is rarely a good idea, especially on AMD-Nvidia videos.
I don't know why I'm watching this when I run a single GPU.
LOL. I'm worse. I dont even have a dGPU
Kadomex I have a laptop with no dGPU
wi run super sli quad intel hd graphics
Kadomex because you want to know about crossfire? No one ever said this video is just for people who intend to use it.
I used to totally ignore AMD cards... oh how I regret it. They basically send proper quality stuff for much cheaper prices.
now*
Glad that I'm an amd fanboy
r9 380x probably one of my best life decisions..
You're correct. They have very good products regardless of what people say, intel had to cheat on cinebench and pay to have their cpu score better and NVidia pay to have games optimized for their gpu. AMD is a very good brand people need to stop kicking them down, there'd be no intel if it wasn't for AMD
0:50 Linus trolling console peasants :D
it took linus about 5 seconds to destroy xbox. ggwp

Now onto PlayStation
I'm not an Nvidia fanboy but STRICTLY speaking about multi GPU configurations, you have to go with SLI. Scaling is usually so much better as well as frame time variance, meaning microstutter is practically nonexistent (technically it's still there, but so miniscule it isn't noticeable). Although AMD has been more focused on working on Crossfire, they are now about where SLI was 2 years ago. Look at any frame times graph with the latest gen Crossfire and SLI setups, you'll see the Crossfire graphs have a much wider and erratic band than the SLI graphs. In those kinds of graphs, the thinner that line is, the smoother the gameplay will feel. I tested my old 2 6950's (unlocked to 6970's) with my current 2 780's. Both had the latest drivers and I tested it in a few games where my fps would never dip below 60 fps with both setups, and had the proper profiles for. I locked the framerate to 60 fps, and played for a little bit on each. My 780's were noticeably smoother, even though I was getting the same reported framerate of a constant 60 fps. They even felt smoother when I played games where I wasn't always getting 60 fps. And although the microstutter wasn't as bad on my 6950's when they were my main graphics cards back in 2011, I still noticed that all too familiar jittery feeling, whereas I really looked for that same sensation with my SLI setup but couldn't notice it. Both technologies aren't perfect, but SLI is definitely in a much better place, although as Linus said it is more restrictive in terms of what you can do with it. But if that doesn't really affect you, and you aren't currently using an AMD card, I implore you to do your own research and come to this conclusion yourself.
Thank you for taking the time to read this :)
No.
Ughhhh god you are just not that bright are you?
Safwat Khan Baseless comment. Show me graphs that refute my assertions then we'll talk.
ApavTech Burn? Should I get the ice?

Dat Xbox One joke.
I love your name.

Nice that as short as these vids are they give you pretty much everything you need to know. :)
hahaha the xbox slam
yep that joke made my day
And neither technology works in Linux.
What the hell is a Linucs?? o.0
Burak Özel it's another OS, like Windows or Mac OS X.
i know windows, i has them in may hause! but what is OS or Mac OS X? an extra large bigmac burger???
areeb1296 ummm... I don't..
***** sorry, ive never been at your homeland... :/
congrats on 100 vids
Thanks for clarifying critical SLI/Crossfire points!
One of the best Techquickie videos. Great and useful information. Thanks, Linus ;)
"...and ACTUALLY run your games at 1080p! Ha! Burn!" xD I love Linus. Lol
Thank you for nice video. Recently build my own computer, and wondered about SLI bridge.
LOVE the " burn" at :55 " SOOOO true about the xbone and pos4"
You should update this. Since crossifre is now better.
Can you combine a hd series with a r9 series?
+Bogdan Lodoba If it's the same chip, yes. Example: an HD 7870 can crossfire with an R9 270X, or a HD 7970 with a 280X.
+Topias Salakka got 7870, can I cross with 390X?
Gentlemen Z No, 390X is a different GPU. You can CF it with R9 270 and 270X though.
Topias Salakka Oh well, my PSU wouldn't handle it anyways.
They're really proud of their Shutter stock account
This is EXTREMELY helpful. Had no idea about the differences until now.
Very informative, I had no idea you could do that with crossfire.

BURN!
gotta love that y-axis on the graph, "up is higher" 1:14
thank you young linus. you gonna be a star in few years ^^
0:47 , best xbox troll ever ahahahahaha
Linus, you are very close to having a monobrow! (or unibrow, whatever you wanna call it)
Thanks, dude. Good explanation.
Thanks Linus! your information is really helpful! :)
So I could have a RX480 + RX460 or R9 390 + R9 390X
yup
My original 290x could have been run alongside the 290, the 390x, the 295x2 and - rumour has it - the 390.
no, RX460 is not polaris 10, you could do it with a RX470
juppp
rx cards are different architectural families from the r9 and r7 200 and 300 series
1:07 "Up is Higher". Did you know your dad is your father?
Am I the only one noticing the hotlights are blowing out the already-quite-white Linus? Even his black shirt is very bright. Compare Linus to the well balanced stock photo in the background @ 4:00
very good info to learn concept of SLI.
Dat burn, though!
Nvidia = Apple
AMD = Android
Why?
KuroNeko Nvidia is expensive like Apple! And AMD is cheap like Android!
jokamutta Not exactly cheap, or expensive
jokamutta Yes but nvidia isn't shit.
TangoNation I didn't say that
Building my first gaming PC in over 15 years. After much research these past couple months I don't search "how to's" anymore, I just search "Linus" and then the component or process I'm trying to understand. Linus' team and channels have saved me a ton of money and headaches.
You need to do some more Videos like this for some simple breakdown of newer tech.
so basically nvidia is the apple of gpus and amd is the android of gpus.
yea i guess so. one makes good products that last. and one makes products that work for a whil and then break down
theyre both great companies and both make great gpus but nvidia is always on top in terms of gpu tech
i guess you can put it that way, but in a sense is being an "apple" such a bad thing in this case. Gpus are not like phones, its very complicated engineering, and the lack of "openness" can have very negative effects (Remember AMD's "open" stereoscopic 3d solution, my god it was terrible) and while they have addressed with better drivers, frame times were an issue as well. Nvidia being as tightly controlled as it is, used a hardware solution to fix the issue before it was even known to the public.
iamterence77
There is so much wrong with what you just wrote :(
Claiming that phones are not complicated compared to GPUs, you need to think again about how modern smartphones have all the components of a laptop and fits in your pocket.
Then you go on to contradict yourself by saying the lack of openness can have very negative effects and point to how an open solution was bad.
Torbjørn Sørli I did not say phones are not complicated but we are talking about silicon here, its complicated to the point where comapanies spend billions in r&d just to keep up with each other. if gpus were as easy as phone assembly by the natural way of how markets go, perfect competition should kick in and there should be more than 3 vendors for graphics and < 4 vendors for phone gpus.
The reality is very feel silicon companies open up their standards. Nvidia locks down, as well as intel, Qualcomm, Apple, IMGtec, and samsung.
BURN! 0:46
Long live the PC Gaming Master Race!
This is my first video for Linus, that I completed to the end.
learned alot. Thanks!
A-M-D. Hotter, faster, better.
a-m-d is cheaper faster better lel
ΑΡΓΥΡΗΣ ΚΟΝΤΟΣ An r9 290x costs more than a gtx 780 here.
Let there be flame war.
Raptor Jesus Well that's funny , a GTX 780 is more expensive than a 290X here , same for 780 Ti....
Just for the record , I do meant by NON REFERENCE of 290X , REFERENCE 290X is cheap as 548$
O yeah and the MSI 290X Lighting , currently the fastest 290X on the market.
It's price at 822$ here and the Sapphire Tri-X 290X for 670$
While GTX 780 it's at 680$ , GTX 780 Ti for 792$
Same for GTX 770 vs R9-290 , 290 is cheaper and faster.
So if you live here , definitely AMD the better choice =)
If you guys are still gonna joke about AMD card running 95C doesn't seem so for the aftermarket cooler ones , matter of fact it runs even cooler than NVIDIA cards in comparison. Not to mention more and more better coolers are being release for the 290X by Sapphire
ΑΡΓΥΡΗΣ ΚΟΝΤΟΣ
ohh god
i never meant to start a war :D
but ..let's grab the pop-corn and watch the flames
u are wrong linus u dont HAVE to have exactly the same nvidia card or ram amount it has to be just the same model, and if u use different ram amounts u will just be able to use the vram of the gpu with least vram
this is true
Thanks that helps. Also nice pebble watch!
I was hoping you might offer up details of your own experiences with sli and crossfire.
(This is my opinion i don't need angry comments)
Nvidia and Amd (Or Ati) Remind me of cars.
Nvidia is a sports car sleek and quiet like a lambo
Amd is like a muscle car packs lots of performance but loud
TNGclips1 I totally agree. The sports car is also more expensive and faster than a muscle car that just sounds and looks powerful on paper but not irl.
Undy The Chibi Dirge I have a Msi r9 290x it performs really well i was going to get the msi gtx 970 (both have 4gb gddr5) but amd was 200$ cheaper so yea
TNGclips1 wait whoa wtf???? where did u get a 290x for $200?
Matteo De Vellis
Theres some really low price 290x my friend has one. They're bad tho.
Mr. Haxminator whats wrong with the 290x?
Linus, I need you to change.
... into this rabbit suit. Don't ask.
OneJacobOfMany LOL
I got into pc gaming like a year ago and i truly enjoy this guys channel. He's clear, precise and funny.
Very informative and To The Point video 👍👍
if this was still relevant
And SLI works more efficiently usually giving better framerates in games. And at least in the yesteryears Crossfire suffered from microstuttering a lot more than SLI.
Yeah, but AMD drastically improved X-fire. 4x 290X for example, scales much better than 4x 780 TI.
Yet all benchmarks shows amd scaling better.
Sabtath Equlmath Exactly. The proof says otherwise.
Old news.
however i didnt have a clue you could xfire a 7970 with a 7950 lololol ty for the info
Yeah, R9 280, R9 280X and HD 7870 XT also can crossfire with each other and the other 2 you mentioned, as they are all mostly based on the same Tahiti core.
Robert Stan however, much like RAM, if its running at a clocked speed, any GPU in CFX or SLI config will ONLY run at the rate of the *slower* GPU.
MonarchGaming true. But that wouldnt be so bad. You still get all the extra stream processors.
Ben Zimmerman Then you have to decide if those are worth the cost. Its far more cost effective to get 2 of the same GPU.
Robert Stan hmm you might know, i have tried googling this, i have an R9 270X 2gb, what is the older counterpart that i could Xfire this with, or would i be better getting the same card again, or maybe even a 4GB version?
can you do a tech quickie on monitors? everything related to them such as refresh rate, hurtz, etc. Please, it would be really helpful
You guys need to think of a way to get significantly more sound absorption in that room, the reverb is quite noticeable.
Nvidia > Apple
ATI > Android
I might get AMD GPU's next build :)
***** I have 2x 4GB 680 at the moment and they were quite expensive. I might try AMD next for the performance/cost ratio. I couldnt give a shit about the lack of a GPU bridge.
awesome vid. really helped me out
MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS LINUSSS
0:54 LMAO
Dude, you make to many gestures you made me almost dance along with you
"ha burn" you killed me, lol, my eyes are tearing hahahaha
Can you guys do a video to explain about bin/binning graphics? It's mentioned a lot in your videos. Thanks LTT.
Wow, I'm really surprised that he didn't explain what "SLI" stands for, something that a lot of people who would watch these vids might not know. It stands for "Scalable Link Interface"
But it's also Scan-Line Interleave ;)
There is 2 different definitions, i've seen both used. It's wierd that not even Nvidia give a clear definition of SLI
Scan-Line Interleave stands for a technology used by 3Dfx, way before nVidia started to be recognized.
and this video was about nvidia and amd
WASDxMerceless Wow, interesting.
Linus do a video on what PCI Express SSD is. I would like to find out
The only difference between a PCI based SSD and a SATA based SSD is the connection it uses. The only benefit of going with a PCI based SSD is bandwidth, and something I would not recommend in a rig if the CPU doesn't have that many PCI lanes available to it. Also, PCI based SSD's are also much more expensive than the SATA counterparts.
oh i see thx for the help
acercon553 its an SSD that uses PCI-E and is faster than any other SSD
I lost it at the "ah! burn!", damm I love your video
First time to see linus like this
Looks like Nvidia is becoming the new Apple. More expensive products and less flexibility.
More anti circle jerks too? Welcome to where razer lives.
That burn tho xD
Linus I just want to say your informational speeches are bad ass
Awesome video, love the humor
Quite honestly I greatly prefer the NVIDIA quality control on SLI setup, and it helps to limit the bs that can occur with bad setups that are almost to common in X-fire setups.
Though, even then... the heat output isn't really noticeable to be honest, considering that it's maybe a 1/3 at most increase in heat (if a perfect scale, though it's less normally) as at the minimal you'll have 3 heat generating components (1 CPU, 2 GPUs), and the CPUs are designed to run hotter, and even more so if you got an AMD chip, though even then it's not going to raise the temp to much higher anyways, because the max thermal output is still bound by the most vulnerable components in the system (which is normally an expansion card).
Though the power output isn't as drastic as a spike as is let on, though it' can add a lot more.
A profile is also dead easy to setup for a game, and having default/generic profiles for programs w/o one (which are easy to setup for NVIDIA or AMD) on the system, can have a standard increase in performance. There are only a few games/3d programs that require changing some settings, and you even then each one can be tweaked for personal tastes.
--Example, I have my generic profile for all programs (not having their own profile) to be a performance boost, preferring speed, and single monitor display, along with disabling standard features in most games (V-sync, etc).
Wait, so Nvidia is Apple and AMD is Windows? Well, I'm glad I have a 7970 then.
so whos linux?
my 7970 kicked my friends 2 SLI Geforce GTX 650 Ti-Boost ass's
good times
high end cards are very expensive comparatively Amd vs Nvidia.
overall Nvidia's gpus by themselves are better for the price, IDK about sli.
also nothing against AMD but Ive seen more broken amd cards.
but as far as cpus go, I would say amd is pretty good, better than intel
1toncheese intel
***** i think he means the thing with the soldered cpu's which amd does do better than intel, that and intel skimped on thermal paste which made their cpus somewhat less amazing and awesome as you dont ever be a cheapass with critical components.....
Thank you Linus
Could you explain the wireless network modes 802.11, 802.11n, and 802.11ac.
Some pros and cons as well as their general differences would be nice
