- Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Clair de Lune L 75 (pub.1905)
Debussy’s music always offers the pianist an opportunity to create a variety of subtle tone colors. For instance, Clair de Lune begins with a whisper of sound, one which Debussy imagines could evoke the serenity of a gentle moonlight filtering through the leaves of a tree on a calm summer eve. He asks the pianist to play very, very softly (pianissimo) and with a muted sound produced by the soft pedal. To create a more shaded, pastel color, a pianist can play close to the keys so the hammers rise to "kiss" the strings rather than strike them with force. Clair de Lune’s ambiguous harmonies and flexible rhythms add to the elusive dreamlike quality he wanted in music that was meant to sweep us away into another world. When Debussy first composed Clair de Lune, he titled it Promenade sentimentale and placed it as the third movement in his Suite Bergamasque, a collection which also includes a Prelude and two lively dances. He decided to shelf the music for later revision. In the 1905 when he was better known and his music in demand, he revised it for publication and changed the title from Promenade sentimental to Clair de Lune after the dreamlike poem of the same name by his friend the symbolist poet Paul Verlaine.
So excellent! It is a joy to see you play this.
Reminds me of my mother
She played that piece nicely when I was growing up
Nicely played
So I just listened to Katia Buniatishvilli play this in a concert hall and got bored. Katia's rests were too long and and I felt that her rendition was overly dramatic. Then I came over here. What I found here was steady tempo with the use of subtle dynamics and a melody elicited from feel. Thanks for posting Nancy Fierro!
Excellent !
Best version I've heard in a while.
Wonderful coloring and timing, Nancy. Most people don't realize how technically challenging this piece really is. Beautifully done!!
HOLY-SMOKE, what an excellent performance. 😊
I just finished listening to Seong Jin Cho's exquisite rendition of this piece and yours is just as exquisite!! Beautiful!
Exquisite presentation, totally blissed me out! Thank you so much, Nancy, for so generously sharing your talent, and I really appreciate the introductory explanations that you include -- very helpful to this non-musician.
💞🌷💞
Incredible
Well you were a surprise playing the most beautiful song most pianists do their version of the song but to play it like Debussy created the masterpiece is beautiful you and Victor Borge have the best two presentations of this masterpiece and I almost didn't listen to how good you played it carry on
I wish you were my teacher. I've been working on this piece for a long time with a goal of playing it just like you did. Amazing.
Your love of the music will bring you to your goal!
What a beautiful performance, full of lots nuances and sensitivity of lines.

Applauding your performance! Thank you for sharing!
Bravo!!! Excellent!! ❤❤❤
Very very skilled approach to my favourite piece. My suggestion for you is to record your Grand piano with a proper set of microphones. In this video, I could hear the room and the reverberation was disturbing. Sorry to say that. But apart from that, this was stunningly good.
Thanks for you comment and observations. You have a great ear. And yes, I agree with your comments about the microphones. Am researching better choices.
Bravo! Perfection! Thank you!
